I purchased Michelle Spence's (Cliff's) Miller Analogies Test Preparation Guide as well as Sternberg's (Barron's) How to Prepare for the MAT -- probably overkill -- but I studied both thoroughly and got a very high score. It was worth it! I have a hunch that Sternberg helped more in the middle score ranges and perhaps Spence in the higher more difficult analogies. Spence stretched my limits. She was more abstract, often leaving me unsatisfied that I understood or agreed with her logic. Sternberg offered clear and helpful details not only about the analogies, but also about every angle of preparing for the test. If I had to choose only one, I would buy Sternberg, but together they offered considerable strength. I think Spence probably added to my score at the top. When I finished the actual test, I felt I had not done as well as I had on the practice tests in either of the preparation books, but actually I had scored higher than nearly all my scores on the practice tests. I valued both of their insights.

Great hints and explanations of what they're looking for in the questions. Good ideas to help you eliminate wrong answers to deduce the answers. Use this book to supplement others that provide more test samples with rational. Good Luck!

Review

Vilnius Contested City In a modern Europe Vilnius can seem peripheral. Mr Briedis, however, begins by noting that when French geographers recently plotted the mid-point between Europe s cartographical extremes, they found the continent s true centre was a derelict farmhouse just outside the city. Foreign visitors have left few written accounts, but Mr Briedis uses them all as sources. A hapless papal delegation provides the first. In 1324 it tried and failed to persuade Lithuania s great pagan ruler, Gediminas, to adopt Christianity. He showed no desire to forsake Perkunas the thunder god, berating his visitors for their intolerance. Why do you always talk about Christian love? he asked the pope s men. Where do you find so much misery, injustice, violence, sin and greed, if not among the Christians? Lithuania eventually adopted Christianity, along with a dynastic deal with Poland, in 1387. A cathedral was built on the pagan temple, the holy fires doused and the sacred groves felled. The Grand Duchy of Lithuania flourished. At its height in the 16th century it was a vast multiconfessional empire, stretching to the Black Sea, with no fewer than six legal languages, including Hebrew and Armenian. Even as that declined, the Vilnius style of Baroque architecture ripened in glory, a splendid autumn in one of Mr Briedis s many well-turned phrases, that paid a gracious farewell to its phantom golden age . The most poignant chapter is on cemeteries past and present, many of which were desecrated by the Soviets. Mass graves are still unearthed in Vilnius. They hold victims of Stalin s NKVD, of the Nazis, and as in one recent example thousands of fallen soldiers from Napoleon s shattered Grande Armée. Vanished civilisations and lost empires leave a city stalked by horror and steeped in wonder. --The Economist

well written. enjoyed reading

Loved it, went there for vacation this fall, best vacation ever

Really interesting and personal and informative

I heard so much praise for this book that I had to have it. It left me completely disappointed because all the reviews misrepresented the content of the book.It is NOT a history of the city. It is a collection of travel impressions from various "strangers" -- foreigners who happened to visit the city at some point during its history.Much of the content is spent on introducing these "strangers" and then retelling their impressions. Because there is no attempt to weave a coherent history from these accounts, there are significant periods or topics with no coverage. As these accounts were taken from foreigners who spend just a brief time in the city, the insights -- while at times refreshing -- are often shallow & spotty.

While I am familiar with the history of Vilnius, having visited the city a number of times, this book provides a different take on that history, which I found to be very interesting. N.V.Udrys

Laimonas Briedis tells his narrative of Vilnius through the eyes of visitors to the city over its long and tumultuous history. The story begins with visits by Papal representatives noting their difficulties in reaching Lithuania and their attempts at converting Lithuania to Christianity, and grows to include observations left by other visitors who stayed in the chartered city for various lengths of time. It isn't so much a history of the city as it is a set of impressions left by strangers through their writings, providing a sense of how the city has grown and developed into a cosmopolitan capital over the centuries. His chapters on Napoleon's Grand Army, which encamped in Vilnius before and after its ill-fated invasion of Russia, and on the Jewish experience over the centuries stand out. He also provides a number of other anecdotes including Dostoevsky's brief stay in Vilnius on his way to European spas, as told through his wife's journal. As such, it becomes a memoir of the city for good and for bad, as experienced by these strangers. One of Briedis' more interesting references is Israel Cohen, who wrote a wonderful history of the city, Vilna (Jewish Communities Series), prior to WWII. In it Cohen not only describes the Jewish experience but also the levels of tolerance of the various governments during that time.I felt the flowing narrative broke down in the closing chapters as Briedis bemoans the city's loss of identity with the major changes that occurred during and after WWII, not least of all the Holocaust. The demographics were dramatically altered and the city was transformed greatly under Soviet rule, but since independence in 1991, Vilnius has undergone a profound change, which I didn't feel Briedis had a firm grip of. Nevertheless, I felt this was a very good study of the city and adds to the growing compendium of the city available in English.

This is a wonderful review of historical events that have left marks on the built environment in Vilnius. I am so much more appreciative of this lovely city knowing more about its past. Vilnius: City of Strangers is a great read, and I recommend it to anyone interested in Eastern European history or Vilnius!

Vilnius, City of Strangers. 250 ppThis is an ideal book that ties the people of Vilnius together. The big change is the Grande Armee of Napoleon in 1812. Then comes the Polish-Lithuanian revolt from Russia in 188?. The Jews are heavily into this Jerusalem of Lithuanis. The outstanding rabbi (goan) was there in 1779.It has numerous references and ties strangers together. The author lives in Vancouver and Vilnius.

Review

“A compelling and complex mystery, strong storytelling, and lyrical writing combine for an engrossing read.”—Publishers Weekly“In The Shadow Land, Elizabeth Kostova, a master storyteller, brings vividly to life an unfamiliar country—Bulgaria—and a painful history that feels particularly relevant now. You won’t want to put down this remarkable book.”—Claire Messud, author of The Woman Upstairs “In this brilliant work, what appears at first a minor mystery quickly becomes emblematic of a whole country’s hidden history. Lyrical and compelling, The Shadow Land proves a profound meditation on how evil is inflicted, endured, and, through courage and compassion, defeated. Elizabeth Kostova’s third novel clearly establishes her as one of America’s finest writers.”—Ron Rash, author of The Risen “The Shadow Land is thrilling, and not just as a gripping tale. It’s also thrilling to watch such a talented writer cast her spell. The central character actually begins this deft novel in an urn, only to emerge as one of the most memorable characters I’ve encountered in a long time.”—Richard Russo, author of Everybody’s Fool “Transporting . . . draws us into Bulgarian history and character revelation like an elegant, mysterious labyrinth. Page-turning, evocative, and richly imagined.”—Dominic Smith, author of The Last Painting of Sara de VosPraise for Elizabeth Kostova’s The Historian“Quite extraordinary . . . Kostova is a natural storyteller. . . . She has refashioned the vampire myth into a compelling contemporary novel, a late-night page-turner.”—San Francisco Chronicle“Hypnotic . . . a thrill ride through history.”—The Denver Post“Part thriller, part history, part romance . . . Kostova has a keen sense of storytelling and she has a marvelous story to tell.”—Baltimore Sun“Kostova’s vampire is no campy Lugosi knockoff. . . . Blending history and myth, Kostova has fashioned a version so fresh that when a stake is finally driven through a heart, it inspires the tragic shock of something happening for the very first time.”—NewsweekPraise for The Swan Thieves“Exquisite.”—The Boston Globe“Engrossing.”—O: The Oprah Magazine“Stunning . . . A beautifully written tale of art, love and an obsession triggered by both.”—Associated Press

Gripping as it is, The Shadow Land is no light entertainment. Thoroughly researched, written “in a spirit of respectful grief for those whose lives were touched by the real history on which it is based” (p.479), it is a compassionate, timely, and effective blend of real history, including 21st-century political corruption, and fiction. It takes the reader to a small country, a country whose thuggish post-WW2 leaders tried to justify their actions by inventing political crimes, and pays an eloquent tribute to two generations of intelligent and well-educated Bulgarians whose dignity, ambitions, property, health, and even lives fell victim to the Balkan version of Stalinism. The labor camps, the exiles and deportations, the denial of access to foreign language schools and university education, the Communist Party controlled professional jobs and art production, the spying, the intimidation, the stigma of “intellectualism”, the closed borders, the jamming of foreign radio broadcasts, the and so much more: very little of that is known to fiction readers and the general public in the US. This may not be Kostova’s most spectacular book, but it consolidates one’s faith in the effectiveness of the art she practices so well.

The Shadow Land was a fantastic read! I loved it. Elizabeth Kostova weaves a tale of adventure, mystery, sorrow and love in this story set in Bulgaria. The story of Stoyan Lazarov's life is a triumph and I enjoyed his character as well as Alexandra Boyds. A must read.I give The Shadow Land 5 stars for its compelling story.I would recommend this story to everyone.

Recommended by a friend who loved it, I struggled with the prose. If you like description in painstaking detail of non-essential elements: color of a flower, luggage, facial expressions, etc. you may love this book.Little plot, little character development.Had potential but too ponderous.

Elizabeth Kostova's new novel begins as a mystery set in Bulgaria involving a lost urn of human ashes. Upon arriving in Sophia, a young American visitor finds the urn in a cab and is aided in her search to restore the urn to its rightful owners by a cabbie with police work and poetry in his past. The suspense ratchets up considerably as the authorities take a lethal interest in the deep secrets of the family that has lost possession of the urn. Among various delights, Ms. Kostova offers a breathtaking portrayal of the interior life of an artist condemned to a gulag in the mountains. I highly recommend The Shadow Land.

I enjoyed this novel and it's descriptions of Bulgaria. My only negative is that the story takes too long to develop. The ending is very satisfying but the story meanders aimlessly during certain sections. All in all this is a wonderfully written novel.

At times, parts were a little drawn out, but that's just my opinion. All-and-all, great writing and a good read. I still liked The Historian the best. I really like this writer's style and will probably read her third book as well.

I am enamored with The Shadowland. My kind of summer read. I was transported to and felt like I experienced first hand traveling across Bulgaria. This is a story of love, loss, and endurance. Love of music, family, and country. Loss of a loved one. Loss of all the freedoms we take for granted under communist rule. The Shadowland personifies the power of keeping the things we love in our minds and hearts in order to endure extreme hardships. We experience communism and its use of forced labor camps. Knowledge of this past is a threat in the present. Everything is there for the reader, though I was so engrossed and on the journey with Alexandra I missed it and shared in her discovery. It is a story of how far one person will go to help/save another. It is also a reminder of how much we take for granted that our freedoms are a given in life. I loved this book.

Very interesting characters and settings in both present and past. Ms. Kostova provides insights into a country's culture, people, and communist past with which not many people are familiar while keeping up suspense.

This was profoundly beautiful!!! 😍😍😍A historical speculative fiction novel set in Montreal in the early 1900s. Dolores Extract #1 is a Mem who's been created by the memory of 19 year old girl named Dolores. At once they realize that Dolore Extract #1 is unique in comparison to other mems. There are times when the line between what she is remembering from her past is blurred with the present, which can makes things bit confusing. I feel this was used by the author to mimic the stream of consciousness that so often allows our past memories to be woven into our present experience. So as confusing as it sometimes is, it was done with regard to showing the realness of our main character. This is a story about what it means to be human, and how our memories create this resonance of emotion that cannot just be wiped away by forgetting. It was so short though, and while it was fittingly short, I wish for just a bit more as this book has left me with a craving

I'm giving this book three stars because of its imaginative premise that memories can take on a life of their own. However, the story never really gets off the ground. The writer's purpose in setting the action in the 1920s remains mysterious to me; the setting plays no real part in the development and creates a distance that's exacerbated by the overblown prose ("Had they not already evaporated in the still air, my words would have turned tail and hurried back to me"), characters who come across as actors in a period melodrama, and a superschmaltz ending cribbed from Dr Who. A shame, because the idea has real potential.

What experiences make us who we are? And who do we become if we remove the memories of those experiences? For those who are concerned this is another take of "eternal sunshine of the spotless mind" fear not. This take on the process of removing old memories delves into who we are as a society, who we are as people, and who we are to others outside that society, all with the backdrop of the glittering 1920s and 30s. It's a stunning feat to explore societal failings and personal triumphs and morals so explicitly within so short a novel, and to do it with prose that never feels rushed. Indeed, though the page count is shorter, this novel allows the reader to breathe with the memories, rather than rushed and crammed together. I don't want to give any spoilers away so I'll leave my review at that. This was a delightful find, and I'm so glad I picked it up on a whim. It's a memory I certainly want to preserve.

This is a cool, thought provoking sci-fi. I tend to read before I go to sleep, and I wish I'd read this book when my mind was fresh and alert. Need to reread to catch all of the nuance I missed. This reminded me of a historical fiction episode of Black Mirror. It's not a long book, but it is packed full and not as fast of a read as I expected it to be. Can't wait to see more from this author.

It was a short book but as other reviewers said, it raises many important questions about memories, trauma and compartmentalization. While the stream-of-consciousness style narrative may be hard for some to follow, it all comes together in a beautiful and satisfying end.

A wonderful example of urban sci-fi. Mem asks the question “just because we can do something, should we?”

I loved this book and its unique voice. I can't wait for more from this author!

MEM is a contemplative speculative novel about 'memory extraction' in the early 20th century Montreal. In turns, I found this novel about how the rich and wealthy rid themselves of disturbing memories by having them removed into replicas called 'Mems' an intriguing concept, a thought piece on how our memories shape us. The evocative setting of Montreal at the turn of the last century, an island in the middle of technological revolution gone slightly awry, helped make the novel strange and wonderful-- as did the main character Dolores/Elsie a 'Mem,' who is the one Mem more than her memory. I do wish that there were more commentary on race and class (this author even addresses the lack of it in an end note -- it's clearly not the novel she wanted to write). Morrow has written a slim novel filled with some big ideas of how memory shapes us, even makes us strong, and certainly, makes us human

This was such a disappointment. I have enjoyed the Colorado Mountain series and felt Kristin Ashley has really become a great writer along the lines of the early Linda Howard. I was really looking forward to Deck's story and this was just awful. I admire Kristin Ashley's choice of unconventional characters but this story line was not good.***SPOILERS****Emmanuelle is supposedly this inexperienced girl who has only had two relationships. She is currently involved in the second with a guy she herself describes as creepy, he works for her and she is having sex with him? Doesn't seem real. A big deal is made about the fact that she is a serious liberal and Decker is a serious Republican? Is this necessary? It adds nothing to the story and the whole thing reads like a real life issue Kristen Ashley herself might have had to deal with. Deck is such a committed Republican that he isn't sure he can even like Emmanuelle since she believes in socialized medicine. This is just an idiotic and unncecessary part of the book. This is all made much worse when she is a little bit late meeting his parents (his father is another rigid conservative who baits her into fight after fight) and is made to feel guilty because she forgot and wasn't there right when they arrived. Give me a break. A total bad ass like Deck is really going to be that pissed off about her not being right on time when his parents arrive? And his dad holds that against her too? And she feels guilt because of this supposed shortcoming? Idiotic. This whole scenario did not ring in any way like a Kristen Ashley man. No way would a whiner like this make it with Lee Nightingale.Sadly, Jacob Decker came off seeming like a total jackass and Emmanuelle Holmes kind of an idiot. The whole thing was a disappointing end to what has been a great series.Oh, and when did Wood get back together with Maggie? Did I miss a book?

I really thought that K.A. is so to say turned the corner with previous book "Broken Dove". I was happy that new book was released and thought it will be much much better than "Jagged". But what a dissapointment :( I am a fan of K.A. books and never thought I will put TWO stars for any of her books. But here we go:Again this freaking time skipping, hours, days.... !!!!!!!!!I was almost screaming when saw this frustrating time skipiing thing, she managed to solve in her other boooks so well without writing "hour later two hours later, three days later". It was soooo annoying. No real development of the storry, but the the idea as such could have been developed so nicely....It was painful to read and I was forcing myself to finish the book, I did.....but the ending was a total disaster. There were some intersting parts of the book, but as soon as it started ir ended..... I regret spending money on this book, waste of money:(So if you love K.A.bookas please do not read this one, better re-read all the rock chick (exceot last one), burgs series and dream man series.I so wish that K.A spend more time on one book at a time, and I hold my breath and hope really hope that Burgs next book won't be such a mess or any other book.Dear K.A, I admire your books, I read all of them (except two) and I trully hope that you will return to your unque style, why I believe fans love your books so much.I am waiting and hoping .......

I've now read 6 books in the Colorado Mountain Series (reading Jagged next). I was debating giving this book a four star rating. While I really enjoyed it, (for me) it wasn't as good as the other books in the series. I'm not saying it was bad, just that I enjoyed the entirety of other books more. (I'm a big fan of the epilogues - this one was chock full of information, just shorter than most of them - which probably affected my review of this book).I loved Deck (Jacob) & Emmanuelle (Emme) they were cute together, they (sort of) start out on shaky ground, but together work through it, and eventually find their HEA. I fell in love with Buford, lol. (Buford is Deck's dog). Happily the book is interspersed with characters from the other books. KA (as always) writes a good story, an easy read that flows, snappy dialogue filled with laughter, love, some tears, & lots of bickering. KA is a wonderful writer - she has the amazing ability of drawing the reader into the story and making you feel all their emotions. So far I haven't been disappointed that I bought all the books in this series.

The author did a really good job of making the impatient woman not feel like a crazy person with her humor and down to earth approach. However this book gives you little new information if you've already done your research

I hate to admit I bought at least a half dozen other books on pre-conception when my husband and I started thinking about starting a family. I am a real planner/researcher by nature and couldn't help myself from wanting to read everything ever written about pregnancy prep in the year or so before I was ready to actually start trying.Well, let me save you some time and money: just get this book and read it cover to cover! That's all you need! If you're an over-achiever (or just like knowledge, like me) you should also get Taking Charge of Your Fertility by Toni Weschler, and then you'll really be armed with tons of information. I honestly think TCOYF should be standard issue to every girl on her 18th birthday--I aced high school anatomy and college biology, and dutifully went to yearly OB-GYN check-ups for twenty years, and yet I learned SO MUCH about my own body that was somehow new to me at age 35, just by reading TCOYF.But, back to this book, The Impatient Woman's Guide to Getting Pregnant--thanks to the awesome information and tips in this book, and the knowledge I gained about my cycles through charting and using a fertility monitor, we conceived within two cycles once we started trying--and I'm over 35 and had some issues I was worried would lead to problems conceiving! I tell all my friends who are thinking about trying to conceive to get this book, a basal body temperature thermometer and the Clearblue Fertility Monitor and they'll be ready to go.I wish this author would turn her talents and humor to a book on pregnancy or parenting--I so appreciated her data-driven yet entertaining approach to this topic. That said, once you ARE pregnant (thanks to this book) I recommend you check out Emily Oster's book Expecting Better, which is the closest thing I've found to this book on the topic of pregnancy.

I have read many books on fertility and pregnancy, and I liked this better than most. Most books are so long and dry that I end up not finishing them, so I appreciated that this was a quick read but still informative. I've also read pregnancy books in the past that attempted to be humorous, but ended up feeling cheesy and lame; this book actually made me laugh out loud a few times, so I appreciated that her humor was on-point.I did disagree with her philosophies on a few things (e.g., she recommends a lower-fat diet whereas I embrace a diet high in healthy fats, including well-sourced red meat; also, I cringe whenever I see people recommending synthetic folic acid over methylated folate, since so much of the population has MTHFR and using folic acid could lead to the very birth defects we are trying to avoid...but in her defense, much of the research on MTHFR and folate has occurred in the five years since her book was published, and even now most doctors are still blissfully ignorant of the harm that maternal supplementation folic acid can do to some babies). If you are worried about how maternal age might affect your fertility, you will find her well-researched statistics comforting. I also appreciated that she spent some time really explaining the pros and cons of each method of tracking your ovulation, and citing statistics that really illustrate how important it is to time intercourse well if you want to get pregnant quickly.Even though I am well-read in this area, I learned a few new things in her book. (For example, did you know that pregnancies resulting from sex ON the day of ovulation are more likely to miscarry than pregnancies that result from sex 1-2 days BEFORE ovulation? As someone who has lost four of six pregnancies, that is pertinent information that will inform our future timing choices.) I also learned some new stuff in her chapter on choosing your baby's gender, a concept that I'd previously written off as hooey. This isn't the first book I'd recommend to someone who has already been struggling with infertility, but if I knew someone who was getting ready to start a family and needed a quick-but-thorough overview of the process, this would be my choice.

#6,142 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

SPOILERS!!!!!!!The female lead, the human side characters and BoBo, the dog get 2 stars. Both alien species and the alien council suck. The bat-like aliens are speciesist and A-holes. I did not like them. Their attitudes were bad. The male lead doesn't even like the female lead initiallly. He even has thoughts of cutting one of their throats out so that he can be done with them. Humans are weak and beneath them (Allens' opinion). He has 180° when mating rage hits for her. Then there is coerced sex at best and questionable rape at worst. She is forced to have sex with the crazed male. If she doesnt, then these aliens won't fight the other aliens who have landed on Earth and are eating people.....heads, hands, half of heads, but chunks. This was a horrific aspect of story that I did not like. While this genocide is going on down on Earth, the other aliens are insulting female lead and forcing sex. So far, there are no good qualities in this book. Does it get better? I'm my opinion, NO! While she is having coerced sex with male lead there are no less than 9 people(aliens) in the room to watch/witness the deed. She asked not to have to do it. They guilt trip her into it by saying, "The quicker that you do this. The quicker we can go help Earth ". She asked not to have witnesses. She is not allowed that either. Then we find out that this particular alien species doesn't believe in monogamy before mating or after. They have several pleasure partners. Fun fact: one of those partners was in the room while she had to do the deed, of which all 3 of the females and 3 males (not of his crew- 3 crew) watching were insulting and rude. I have still not read any redeemable qualities for any of the alien species. All of the alien species in this book disgust me. Female lead is kidnapped and forced/coerced to have sex with male lead. The cherry on top, she is insulted the entire time as well as sneers and snide remarks thrown at her. Male lead doesn't mentally act like he will be faithful. Mental comment was something like, "She will be my first wife/mate and favorite". WTF!?!!!?! WTH?!?! This is NOT what I want to read in a book. For the female lead, it feels like Stockholm Syndrome.

Let me start off by saying that this book had an intriguing plot and funny, interesting characters. That being said... it is in desperate need of an editor. The misuse and sometimes lack of punctuation, misspelled words, confusing plural (-s) with ownership (-‘s). The author did the latter frequently. For example, writing “human’s” when she meant “humans”. In all the books that I’ve read with terrible grammar and punctuation, the authors were at least knowledgeable enough not to get those mixed up. It’s a simple concept, yet the author of this book couldn’t seem to grasp and understand it.The biggest mistake, the one that bothered me the most as a grammar nazi, was when the author used “your” when it should’ve been “you’re”. That has always been one of my biggest pet peeves, and she did it more than once.Like I said, I am a grammar nazi, but I can usually put up with blatant grammatical errors in books. This book was filled to the metaphorical brim with them, though. I just couldn’t get past (I think the author also used past when she meant passed) all of them and I ended up skipping large parts of the book because it was just so painful to read. To top it off, the book ended on a cliffhanger. Now, things I didn’t like about the actual story: the male lead intends to take other mates, though the female lead will be his “favorite”; the alien’s appearance was too alien, in my opinion; and the first time they have sex isn’t exactly consensual. While the latter bothers me, I’m more disturbed that the male lead plans on being unfaithful. That’s a huge turn off for me.Again, the plot and the characters were interesting, but the book couldn’t go a page without a mistake, and that was annoying and distracting. I’m sure other people can put up with it, but I can’t and I won’t. Although, I want to know what happens, I will not be reading the next book, or any book for that matter by this author. I do hope she improves upon her writing or is able to get a decent editor. Some editing would make this book perfect.

The aliens were different, but that's kind of the only plus for me. Not sure why anyone is into loss of autonomy. Women being thrown over men's shoulders got old fast. The heroine is hardly allowed to make any decisions, and the book ends on a cliffhanger ** spoilers ** with her imprisoned by her mate (who raped her shortly after they met, and plans to take other lovers) super romantic /s. I can't be bothered to get the next one, wish I'd read the reviews before buying.

I don't even watch television series where you have to wait until the next episode to find out what happened from the previous one. What I do is wait until a series comes out on dvd, I buy it and have a marathon at my convenience. LolHaving said that if I had known the next book wasn't coming until November I would have waited to read this one until it was available. Hard to keep story lines straight otherwise when you read as much as I do. I read books like this every single day like some people eat potato chips or Brett Kavanaugh drinks beer.I really enjoyed the story and do look forward to seeing how things turn out. I love the humor of miscommunication because of language differences and cultural differences like thinking of a dog as a mule and figuring out he is treated, not as a food source but as a family member or friend as are the goat and chickens. Those tidbits of levity help through the heavy plot of technologically advanced human-face-and-limb-eating Vatat as well as our wonderful human leaders who think nothing of launching nuclear bombs on our own planet.

I just spent a weekend immersed in Courtenay Hameister's weird, sometimes neurotic, and always hilarious mind and came through it refreshed and feeling oddly hopeful about life. What a ride! The year-plus of her life in these pages reads like a bildungsroman had a head-on collision with a mid-life crisis. It's equal parts cringe-worthy, sweet, snarky, and gut-wrenching. For all her talk of crippling fears and panic attacks, the fact that Okay, Fine, Whatever exists is a tribute to a very brave soul indeed.

It is good for me that Courteany Hameister is in the world, abandoning her comfort zones and risking her sanity so that I can sit back in air conditioning and read about it with absolute enjoyment. Her FABULOUS memoir's 300 pages are a nail biting, no holds barred thrill ride inside a brain that hates thrill rides, and encountering barred holds. This is not a brain that is comfortable with itself, or with anything really, but it is laid bare, none the less, for all to see and love and laugh with. It is just plain great. Okay Fine Whatever, is an oasis. Drink from it's waters and be renewed.

I planned to read this book over a bit of time, since it’s structured in chapters that are sort of “stand alone” pieces. But nope! I binged on this thing like a Netflix series, it was so compelling and smart and funny and moving. I’m grateful to not suffer the anxiety described here, but I don’t think it’s possible to be human and not find yourself from time to time facing moments in life where you experience something close to it. Courtenay Hameister’s ballsy bravery is a gift to the reader — she’s hilarious and honest and unashamedly occasionally incontinent, which I now add to my #lifegoals.

I was initially so excited about this book. I loved the title, the idea of it, and the cover really grabbed me as well. However, after I started reading, I quickly realized I shouldn't have purchased it. I ended up eventually getting to page 100, give or take a few. I usually read a book in a day or 2 and it's been a month because it's so hard to go back and read another chapter. I don't know if I just didn't understand the humor or if it just wasn't funny; but the writing style just wasn't for me. I found a lot of it repetative, not interesting, and just plain boring. One of the very few books I haven't completely finished. I just couldn't bring myself to complete it.

This book made me laugh more than anything has in a very long time. I wasn't familiar with the author or her work on public radio, I just loved the concept of the book, doing things that scared her for a year. It was touching, raw, honest, a little crazy (like, she did things I would NEVER do), and super inspiring. One of my favorite memoirs!

...but this book is so honestly written that if you don't identify with any of the stories you're probably taking too many drugs. It was hilarious, and sad, and really well done.

Okay Fine Whatever is funny, raunchy, clever, enlightening, and one of the very best memoirs I've read in years. Courtenay Hameister is one gutsy scaredy cat. She's such a great comedy writer she made me look forward to reading the footnotes. I tip my hat.

I’d heard only a few minutes of Live Wire so wasn’t familiar with the author. Her story is as described in the title and more. Her self-imposed experiences are delightfully cringe-worthy and they led to her deeper understanding of mental health, physical health, body image and ultimately our ability to love ourselves. A good read.

The Mystery of Skara Brae: Neolithic Scotland and the Origins of Ancient Egypt, by Laird Scranton

Review

“Antiquarian scholar Laird Scranton has done it again. In his latest book, The Mystery of Skara Brae, he takes the reader to one of the most remote locations in the British Isles, then proceeds to lay out the heretofore unknown story of a well-organized yet mysterious culture that flourished off the western coast of Scotland, only to decamp forever around 2600 BCE. Who were the inhabitants of Skara Brae, and what connection did they have with the peoples who went on to create ancient Egypt? What knowledge did they share with the ancient African tribe the Dogon? Where did they come from, and to where did they disappear? Scranton guides us through time and tradition in an account that both novices and scholars will embrace. . . . marvelous and highly educational. I would recommend it unhesitatingly to anyone interested in ancient mysteries.” (Peter Robbins, coauthor of Left at East Gate)“If you are interested in ancient mysteries, then you must read the writings of Laird Scranton. . . . The Mystery of Skara Brae is a welcome addition to his amazing library of work. Connections between ancient cultures that would not seem to be related at first glance have long fascinated me, and no one explores these connections better than Laird, both in his scholarship and level of detail. If you want to explore the evidence on the eerie similarities between ancient civilizations, get your copy of The Mystery of Skara Brae today.” (Jim Harold, host of The Paranormal Podcast)

I couldn't recommend this book more highly!!! I read it in a day ..I couldn't put it down. Incredible read, with amazing information. My two favorite places in the world merging! Scotland and Egypt! can't get more exciting than that, not for me anyway. I saw another person who only gave this book two stars, said it was a dry read - it is anything but! It is an exciting world of discovery - for serious researchers and explorers, this book is a MUST read. Buy it! you will treasure this book forever.

Will read again and may add to this. Very unexpected proposals and conclusions but fleshed out nicely. Wish it cost less as then I'd recommend it more comfortably.

I have always loved the Saddle Club, and have read every single book in that series. But after starting to read Pine Hollow I was disappointed. I liked the accident in The Long Ride, very suspenseful, but this was probably the best book. They are well written, but after reading the Saddle Club, a bit of a letdown! For example, Belle, Starlight and Prancer were rarely mentioned, ditto Max. And this seems to be more of a romance series then a horse series. I'm not completely against romance, but Bonnie Bryant is advertising this as a horse series so of course horse lovers are going to read it. I am 13, totally horse crazy, and I know that when I'm Pine Hollow age I will still be mad about and involved in horses! Bonnie Bryant is a wonderful writer, but the Pine Hollow series needs a little work, and that's my $0.2...

When I was in second grade, I started reading the Saddle Club series by Bonnie Bryant. There were a total of about 15 books about Stevie, Carol, and Lisa. I loved the books. I kept reading them and buying them as they came out. When I was a older and in 5th and 6th grade I was getting a little old for the series and was reading them more and more sparingly. Now Im in 8th grade and hardly ever read the Saddle Club. They were just to juvenile and never got older. But when Pine Hollow: The Long Ride came out, I was very excited and couldn't wait to read it. I finally got my hands on it and couldn't stop reading. It had much more of a plot than the other books and was definitely more up to my standards. It also contained other things besides horses to make the book more interesting. I loved every word of it. Thanks Mrs. Bryant and keep up the good work!

What happened to the saddle club? The rules were must love horses and must help each other! They broke both these rules many times in this book? In the saddle club, it seemed like Carole, Stevie and Lisa were my best friends, in this book it seemed like they were my worst ememys! Who wrote this book? not Bonnie Bryant! I just know that after 111 touching, exciting, funny horsey books she couldn't just throw it all away! What happened? It's like a nightmare! I've been reading the saddle club for years, and this is about totally different people. No one could go from a wonderful person to the most terrible person in the world in a few years? Lisa dating Alex? Veronica married? Stevie giving up practical jokes? Carole selling Starlight? I THINK NOT!! A trillion thumbs down!!

I thought this book was good. But i also have to admit, i picked it up for the first time and put it back on the shelf thinking it wouldn't have enough horses in it. I went back and got it, and loved it. To all those people out there who are complaining that there are not enough horses in it, Ms. Bryant can't please everyone. The characters are not perfect, but not awful. To all you readers, I hope you will give Pine Hollow a try. This book displays teen views and problems in real life, plus it talks about horses. Also for me, if i wanted more INFORMATION about horses, I would just get a real book on horses. I think it is great what Ms. Bryant is doing with her new series. The characters are growing up, so she should write them like they are. Your books are great Ms. Bryant, keep up the good work!

After reading the saddle club book I was getting worried because as I grew older the girls never seemed to. No matter now many times Carol had a birthday she never got older. Now I finally feel they have caught up. I started reading them when I was 10 and I'm now 17 so feel that this new series is making the saddle club more realistic. I am having problems though with should I continue getting the saddle club series whilst buying the pine hollow series.

To those of you who are wondering, "Where are the horses," think about it. I personally love the Saddle Club...it's a great book to relax to, to feel happy about. But really, Pine Hollow is a more mature series, one that taps into reality more than the Saddle Club. In real life, problems can't be solved by one thing: horses. In real life, things are hard, complicated, and unfair. Life is, at times, like a soap opera. It doesn't revolve around horses. If you want that kind of story, then the Saddle Club is still there...but if you want a more down-to-earth series with more realistic occurings, then Pine Hollow is for you. For someone who made a comparison of Pine Hollow and Sweet Valley High, where have you been? Car accidents happen. Witnessing 800,000,001 murders throughout your whole lifetime doesn't. All in all, Pine Hollow is a great series that will appeal to many people.

I used to love the saddle club because the stories were always spirit-lifting and TOTALLY about horses. If I couldn't be riding, I'd be reading one of the saddle club books. But eventually, I outgrew them.I was thrilled when I learned about the Pine Hallow series.A horse series for teens!I don't think I have ever been so dissappointed before I read that horrible book.Did B. Bryant team up w/ the writer of Sweet Valley High?!?!She doesn't even MENTION the saddle club. The Long Ride Home is the first & last book in that series that I purchased.SORRY!

I have not read "The Long Ride"--yet! But, I have read the excerpt (standing in the middle of Wal-Mart) out of the Saddle Club book "English Rider." I think it's going to be an excellent book. If you haven't read the excerpt yet, you should. Especially if, like me, you used to read the Saddle Club books, but stopped because they were getting too young for you. I think Pine Hollow promises to be a great new series about Lisa, Stevie, and Carole. Thanks, Bonnie Bryant! Happy Reading!!
