I have always loved the Saddle Club, and have read every single book in that series. But after starting to read Pine Hollow I was disappointed. I liked the accident in The Long Ride, very suspenseful, but this was probably the best book. They are well written, but after reading the Saddle Club, a bit of a letdown! For example, Belle, Starlight and Prancer were rarely mentioned, ditto Max. And this seems to be more of a romance series then a horse series. I'm not completely against romance, but Bonnie Bryant is advertising this as a horse series so of course horse lovers are going to read it. I am 13, totally horse crazy, and I know that when I'm Pine Hollow age I will still be mad about and involved in horses! Bonnie Bryant is a wonderful writer, but the Pine Hollow series needs a little work, and that's my $0.2...

When I was in second grade, I started reading the Saddle Club series by Bonnie Bryant. There were a total of about 15 books about Stevie, Carol, and Lisa. I loved the books. I kept reading them and buying them as they came out. When I was a older and in 5th and 6th grade I was getting a little old for the series and was reading them more and more sparingly. Now Im in 8th grade and hardly ever read the Saddle Club. They were just to juvenile and never got older. But when Pine Hollow: The Long Ride came out, I was very excited and couldn't wait to read it. I finally got my hands on it and couldn't stop reading. It had much more of a plot than the other books and was definitely more up to my standards. It also contained other things besides horses to make the book more interesting. I loved every word of it. Thanks Mrs. Bryant and keep up the good work!

What happened to the saddle club? The rules were must love horses and must help each other! They broke both these rules many times in this book? In the saddle club, it seemed like Carole, Stevie and Lisa were my best friends, in this book it seemed like they were my worst ememys! Who wrote this book? not Bonnie Bryant! I just know that after 111 touching, exciting, funny horsey books she couldn't just throw it all away! What happened? It's like a nightmare! I've been reading the saddle club for years, and this is about totally different people. No one could go from a wonderful person to the most terrible person in the world in a few years? Lisa dating Alex? Veronica married? Stevie giving up practical jokes? Carole selling Starlight? I THINK NOT!! A trillion thumbs down!!

I thought this book was good. But i also have to admit, i picked it up for the first time and put it back on the shelf thinking it wouldn't have enough horses in it. I went back and got it, and loved it. To all those people out there who are complaining that there are not enough horses in it, Ms. Bryant can't please everyone. The characters are not perfect, but not awful. To all you readers, I hope you will give Pine Hollow a try. This book displays teen views and problems in real life, plus it talks about horses. Also for me, if i wanted more INFORMATION about horses, I would just get a real book on horses. I think it is great what Ms. Bryant is doing with her new series. The characters are growing up, so she should write them like they are. Your books are great Ms. Bryant, keep up the good work!

After reading the saddle club book I was getting worried because as I grew older the girls never seemed to. No matter now many times Carol had a birthday she never got older. Now I finally feel they have caught up. I started reading them when I was 10 and I'm now 17 so feel that this new series is making the saddle club more realistic. I am having problems though with should I continue getting the saddle club series whilst buying the pine hollow series.

To those of you who are wondering, "Where are the horses," think about it. I personally love the Saddle Club...it's a great book to relax to, to feel happy about. But really, Pine Hollow is a more mature series, one that taps into reality more than the Saddle Club. In real life, problems can't be solved by one thing: horses. In real life, things are hard, complicated, and unfair. Life is, at times, like a soap opera. It doesn't revolve around horses. If you want that kind of story, then the Saddle Club is still there...but if you want a more down-to-earth series with more realistic occurings, then Pine Hollow is for you. For someone who made a comparison of Pine Hollow and Sweet Valley High, where have you been? Car accidents happen. Witnessing 800,000,001 murders throughout your whole lifetime doesn't. All in all, Pine Hollow is a great series that will appeal to many people.

I used to love the saddle club because the stories were always spirit-lifting and TOTALLY about horses. If I couldn't be riding, I'd be reading one of the saddle club books. But eventually, I outgrew them.I was thrilled when I learned about the Pine Hallow series.A horse series for teens!I don't think I have ever been so dissappointed before I read that horrible book.Did B. Bryant team up w/ the writer of Sweet Valley High?!?!She doesn't even MENTION the saddle club. The Long Ride Home is the first & last book in that series that I purchased.SORRY!

I have not read "The Long Ride"--yet! But, I have read the excerpt (standing in the middle of Wal-Mart) out of the Saddle Club book "English Rider." I think it's going to be an excellent book. If you haven't read the excerpt yet, you should. Especially if, like me, you used to read the Saddle Club books, but stopped because they were getting too young for you. I think Pine Hollow promises to be a great new series about Lisa, Stevie, and Carole. Thanks, Bonnie Bryant! Happy Reading!!

The content is superb but the maps & pics when expanded are terrible (especially for the cost of the book.) If I had to do it over, I would return the Kindle edition and purchase the hardcover. Please Amazon, redo the way the maps expand so they are clear.

This was a suggested book for one of my classes in seminary. I almost didn't buy it but I'm REALLY glad I did...especially for the usage of the OT! While studying 1 and 2 Samuel it was immensely helpful to visualize the movements. There are several maps on each page with directional arrows for almost every event in David's life. This was my "second bible" to my Bible reading...I was taken to a new level with my understanding of OT history just by being able to visualize the battles and travels.

I study Torah on a weekly basis. Whenever an area is mentioned, I use this atlas to add to my knowledge of its location.

I haven't been through the whole book carefully so I can't speak to the rest of the book. My seminary professor highly recommended it. But one map in particular has some significant mistakes. Map 277 of Paul's Second Missionary Journey is loaded with problems. I think that the third missionary journey graphic got mixed in (or they put the third journey map where the second should be?). It has Paul traveling from Philippi to Troas which was true of the third but opposite in the second. It has Eutychus saved in Troas, again a third journey event. It doesn't have Paul going to Athens.

Great historical atlas. Fully covers to Old Testament (Tanakh) era,

Great book that helps map out the Biblical lands and historic places. Very good

exact locations in graph index not given made it time consuming to find. Colour that marks borders, countries and seas etc., needs to be included.

This is an excellent Atlas for Bible Students. There are numerous well drawn and appropriate maps accompanied by an index of geographical and human references. This Atlas is a well updated version of what was originally The MacMillan Bible Atlas that I have found in our local library. It is an Atlas that is well worth buying and compares favorably as the best of the lot of available Atlases available. The book shows years and years of scholarly research strengthened by many photographs and illustrations. I can't say enough about this Atlas, it is well printed and very very thorough. I recommend it to anyone who is interested in The Holy Bible whether you are a Jew, a Christian, this Historical Atlas of The Holy Lands should be in your personal library.

I should say straight off that I loved the Julia Grey books, and was sad when I read on Deanna's blog that the series had come to an end. Unfortunately, this series doesn't hold up quite as well. Though the book was enjoyable enough, the mystery was rather subpar, the backstories often didn't make sense, and I was left unimpressed by Veronica as a character.I seem to be in the minority, but I didn't particularly like Veronica. I am all for the Amelia Peabody-esque woman who takes charge and flouts convention, but there is a fine line between being a bad*ss and being a jerk. The fact that this book opens with Veronica lamenting the fact that she can't shed a tear over the grave of a woman who adopted her immediately set Veronica in the latter camp for me. She is eye-twitchingly narcissistic, oftentimes rude, and jarringly devoid of empathy. However, what bothered me the most is that even though she is simply the cleverest of all clever Victorian Mary-Sues, she has an appalling lack of critical thinking. I am no stranger to the character who can't figure out what the reader has deduced fifty pages earlier, and normally it doesn't bother me. But it is rather grating going through pages of Veronica bragging about her superior talents in morse code, embalming, and escaping kidnappers when chica can't figure out the obvious, like there *might* be something suspicious about her adopted aunts' habit of changing addresses every six months or that the "robber" that stole nothing and tried pull her into an awaiting carriage might not have been a robber but a would-be abductor. It takes Veronica 3/4 of the book to accept this. It takes a clever reader two pages, a less clever reader three, and the most sleep-deprived and/or intoxicated reader four, where it is helpfully pointed out by a secondary character. That's not to say that she doesn't have her moments. But they are far and few between. Fortunately, the other characters in the book are much more pleasant. Stoker is your typical dishonorable Honourable with a heart of gold. Other characters were similar tropes, but Raybourn's good dialogue keeps them from being routine. The second aspect that I didn't like was that the backstories of characters didn't seem to line up well. Veronica is about 24, and yet has visited (off the top of my head) Switzerland, Ireland, Italy, Costa Rica, Sumatra, Java, Mexico, Malaysia, Sicily, Corsica, the Rocky Mountains, and South America. I mean, it's technically not impossible, but combined with time back in England to care for both sickly aunts, it just seemed way too unrealistic. Stoker is the same way--he has five different histories (knife thrower, explorer, surgeon, taxonomist, etc) though as he is older and left home at 12, I give him more lee-way to have cultivated an interesting backstory. Finally, the mystery just wasn't particularly good. An orphan main character in a mystery is bound to have an interesting parent or two. It's just how it works, so the fact that the mystery was centered on this reveal was a letdown. The action scene at the end had a similar "eh" feel, and was based on the laughable premise that bad guys and the police would not immediately rush to a place where they know their intended victim/suspect is, but instead wait several hours because VERONICA ASKED THEY COME AT 9 AND EVEN SENT OUT INVITATIONS, OKAY?That said, it was a fine enough read and I have hopes that Raybourn will make her follow up better. Plus, the cover art is cool.

Rarely do I leave a negative review. Rarely have I met a more annoying main character or struggled so hard to finish a book. Veronica Speedwell is an unrealistic character for the time but the main problem is how truly overbearing and unlikable she is. Obviously, cast in a modern-day feminist light, I could barely read without rolling my eyes I would have loved her if she'd been more like the original feminists. But we get this Veronica- complete with a rather cold-blooded attitude toward her sex partners. She even refers to them as "playthings". Eye roll. This is what feminism has been reduced to? Not only that, she's offered as a paragon of perfection, with no real character arc. She's exactly the same person at the end of the book as she is at the beginning, except for her feelings for Stoker. Stoker. I wanted to like him. The problem with Stoker is that he's completely cowed by Veronica and that lessens his appeal so much. Love the cover, though.

genre historical fiction?setting Englandformat standaloneDNF (skimmed to the end)The beginning (free sample) is well done. However, as was said by some other reviewer, I found the leading lady less and less likable as the story progressed. Her initial presentation is a bit of an odd duck, but from there she becomes progressively prickly and defies convention and her fellow man seemingly compulsively. She seeks oft to shock or offend, which is tiring to read. The mystery of why she is pursued by murderers is dragged out, then ridiculously over the top when revealed. There simply was not much I can recommend about the plot or characters. There is no romance between the main characters; and the historical setting seemed more creative re-imagining of history than an actual historical setting. The prose itself was excellent. That almost made up for the rest…but not quite.
