#199,910 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

This was profoundly beautiful!!! 😍😍😍A historical speculative fiction novel set in Montreal in the early 1900s. Dolores Extract #1 is a Mem who's been created by the memory of 19 year old girl named Dolores. At once they realize that Dolore Extract #1 is unique in comparison to other mems. There are times when the line between what she is remembering from her past is blurred with the present, which can makes things bit confusing. I feel this was used by the author to mimic the stream of consciousness that so often allows our past memories to be woven into our present experience. So as confusing as it sometimes is, it was done with regard to showing the realness of our main character. This is a story about what it means to be human, and how our memories create this resonance of emotion that cannot just be wiped away by forgetting. It was so short though, and while it was fittingly short, I wish for just a bit more as this book has left me with a craving

I'm giving this book three stars because of its imaginative premise that memories can take on a life of their own. However, the story never really gets off the ground. The writer's purpose in setting the action in the 1920s remains mysterious to me; the setting plays no real part in the development and creates a distance that's exacerbated by the overblown prose ("Had they not already evaporated in the still air, my words would have turned tail and hurried back to me"), characters who come across as actors in a period melodrama, and a superschmaltz ending cribbed from Dr Who. A shame, because the idea has real potential.

What experiences make us who we are? And who do we become if we remove the memories of those experiences? For those who are concerned this is another take of "eternal sunshine of the spotless mind" fear not. This take on the process of removing old memories delves into who we are as a society, who we are as people, and who we are to others outside that society, all with the backdrop of the glittering 1920s and 30s. It's a stunning feat to explore societal failings and personal triumphs and morals so explicitly within so short a novel, and to do it with prose that never feels rushed. Indeed, though the page count is shorter, this novel allows the reader to breathe with the memories, rather than rushed and crammed together. I don't want to give any spoilers away so I'll leave my review at that. This was a delightful find, and I'm so glad I picked it up on a whim. It's a memory I certainly want to preserve.

This is a cool, thought provoking sci-fi. I tend to read before I go to sleep, and I wish I'd read this book when my mind was fresh and alert. Need to reread to catch all of the nuance I missed. This reminded me of a historical fiction episode of Black Mirror. It's not a long book, but it is packed full and not as fast of a read as I expected it to be. Can't wait to see more from this author.

It was a short book but as other reviewers said, it raises many important questions about memories, trauma and compartmentalization. While the stream-of-consciousness style narrative may be hard for some to follow, it all comes together in a beautiful and satisfying end.

A wonderful example of urban sci-fi. Mem asks the question “just because we can do something, should we?”

I loved this book and its unique voice. I can't wait for more from this author!

MEM is a contemplative speculative novel about 'memory extraction' in the early 20th century Montreal. In turns, I found this novel about how the rich and wealthy rid themselves of disturbing memories by having them removed into replicas called 'Mems' an intriguing concept, a thought piece on how our memories shape us. The evocative setting of Montreal at the turn of the last century, an island in the middle of technological revolution gone slightly awry, helped make the novel strange and wonderful-- as did the main character Dolores/Elsie a 'Mem,' who is the one Mem more than her memory. I do wish that there were more commentary on race and class (this author even addresses the lack of it in an end note -- it's clearly not the novel she wanted to write). Morrow has written a slim novel filled with some big ideas of how memory shapes us, even makes us strong, and certainly, makes us human

This was such a disappointment. I have enjoyed the Colorado Mountain series and felt Kristin Ashley has really become a great writer along the lines of the early Linda Howard. I was really looking forward to Deck's story and this was just awful. I admire Kristin Ashley's choice of unconventional characters but this story line was not good.***SPOILERS****Emmanuelle is supposedly this inexperienced girl who has only had two relationships. She is currently involved in the second with a guy she herself describes as creepy, he works for her and she is having sex with him? Doesn't seem real. A big deal is made about the fact that she is a serious liberal and Decker is a serious Republican? Is this necessary? It adds nothing to the story and the whole thing reads like a real life issue Kristen Ashley herself might have had to deal with. Deck is such a committed Republican that he isn't sure he can even like Emmanuelle since she believes in socialized medicine. This is just an idiotic and unncecessary part of the book. This is all made much worse when she is a little bit late meeting his parents (his father is another rigid conservative who baits her into fight after fight) and is made to feel guilty because she forgot and wasn't there right when they arrived. Give me a break. A total bad ass like Deck is really going to be that pissed off about her not being right on time when his parents arrive? And his dad holds that against her too? And she feels guilt because of this supposed shortcoming? Idiotic. This whole scenario did not ring in any way like a Kristen Ashley man. No way would a whiner like this make it with Lee Nightingale.Sadly, Jacob Decker came off seeming like a total jackass and Emmanuelle Holmes kind of an idiot. The whole thing was a disappointing end to what has been a great series.Oh, and when did Wood get back together with Maggie? Did I miss a book?

I really thought that K.A. is so to say turned the corner with previous book "Broken Dove". I was happy that new book was released and thought it will be much much better than "Jagged". But what a dissapointment :( I am a fan of K.A. books and never thought I will put TWO stars for any of her books. But here we go:Again this freaking time skipping, hours, days.... !!!!!!!!!I was almost screaming when saw this frustrating time skipiing thing, she managed to solve in her other boooks so well without writing "hour later two hours later, three days later". It was soooo annoying. No real development of the storry, but the the idea as such could have been developed so nicely....It was painful to read and I was forcing myself to finish the book, I did.....but the ending was a total disaster. There were some intersting parts of the book, but as soon as it started ir ended..... I regret spending money on this book, waste of money:(So if you love K.A.bookas please do not read this one, better re-read all the rock chick (exceot last one), burgs series and dream man series.I so wish that K.A spend more time on one book at a time, and I hold my breath and hope really hope that Burgs next book won't be such a mess or any other book.Dear K.A, I admire your books, I read all of them (except two) and I trully hope that you will return to your unque style, why I believe fans love your books so much.I am waiting and hoping .......

I've now read 6 books in the Colorado Mountain Series (reading Jagged next). I was debating giving this book a four star rating. While I really enjoyed it, (for me) it wasn't as good as the other books in the series. I'm not saying it was bad, just that I enjoyed the entirety of other books more. (I'm a big fan of the epilogues - this one was chock full of information, just shorter than most of them - which probably affected my review of this book).I loved Deck (Jacob) & Emmanuelle (Emme) they were cute together, they (sort of) start out on shaky ground, but together work through it, and eventually find their HEA. I fell in love with Buford, lol. (Buford is Deck's dog). Happily the book is interspersed with characters from the other books. KA (as always) writes a good story, an easy read that flows, snappy dialogue filled with laughter, love, some tears, & lots of bickering. KA is a wonderful writer - she has the amazing ability of drawing the reader into the story and making you feel all their emotions. So far I haven't been disappointed that I bought all the books in this series.

#45,810 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

The author did a really good job of making the impatient woman not feel like a crazy person with her humor and down to earth approach. However this book gives you little new information if you've already done your research

I hate to admit I bought at least a half dozen other books on pre-conception when my husband and I started thinking about starting a family. I am a real planner/researcher by nature and couldn't help myself from wanting to read everything ever written about pregnancy prep in the year or so before I was ready to actually start trying.Well, let me save you some time and money: just get this book and read it cover to cover! That's all you need! If you're an over-achiever (or just like knowledge, like me) you should also get Taking Charge of Your Fertility by Toni Weschler, and then you'll really be armed with tons of information. I honestly think TCOYF should be standard issue to every girl on her 18th birthday--I aced high school anatomy and college biology, and dutifully went to yearly OB-GYN check-ups for twenty years, and yet I learned SO MUCH about my own body that was somehow new to me at age 35, just by reading TCOYF.But, back to this book, The Impatient Woman's Guide to Getting Pregnant--thanks to the awesome information and tips in this book, and the knowledge I gained about my cycles through charting and using a fertility monitor, we conceived within two cycles once we started trying--and I'm over 35 and had some issues I was worried would lead to problems conceiving! I tell all my friends who are thinking about trying to conceive to get this book, a basal body temperature thermometer and the Clearblue Fertility Monitor and they'll be ready to go.I wish this author would turn her talents and humor to a book on pregnancy or parenting--I so appreciated her data-driven yet entertaining approach to this topic. That said, once you ARE pregnant (thanks to this book) I recommend you check out Emily Oster's book Expecting Better, which is the closest thing I've found to this book on the topic of pregnancy.

I have read many books on fertility and pregnancy, and I liked this better than most. Most books are so long and dry that I end up not finishing them, so I appreciated that this was a quick read but still informative. I've also read pregnancy books in the past that attempted to be humorous, but ended up feeling cheesy and lame; this book actually made me laugh out loud a few times, so I appreciated that her humor was on-point.I did disagree with her philosophies on a few things (e.g., she recommends a lower-fat diet whereas I embrace a diet high in healthy fats, including well-sourced red meat; also, I cringe whenever I see people recommending synthetic folic acid over methylated folate, since so much of the population has MTHFR and using folic acid could lead to the very birth defects we are trying to avoid...but in her defense, much of the research on MTHFR and folate has occurred in the five years since her book was published, and even now most doctors are still blissfully ignorant of the harm that maternal supplementation folic acid can do to some babies). If you are worried about how maternal age might affect your fertility, you will find her well-researched statistics comforting. I also appreciated that she spent some time really explaining the pros and cons of each method of tracking your ovulation, and citing statistics that really illustrate how important it is to time intercourse well if you want to get pregnant quickly.Even though I am well-read in this area, I learned a few new things in her book. (For example, did you know that pregnancies resulting from sex ON the day of ovulation are more likely to miscarry than pregnancies that result from sex 1-2 days BEFORE ovulation? As someone who has lost four of six pregnancies, that is pertinent information that will inform our future timing choices.) I also learned some new stuff in her chapter on choosing your baby's gender, a concept that I'd previously written off as hooey. This isn't the first book I'd recommend to someone who has already been struggling with infertility, but if I knew someone who was getting ready to start a family and needed a quick-but-thorough overview of the process, this would be my choice.
