Reading his letters and speeches opened a perspective undocumented by historical accounts of his life and times. These show a man with a crystal clear perspective on the destructive 'divide and oppress' ethos that historically characterizes the U.S. Federal and State governments. My admiration for his tireless dedication and work to build a dynamic, international, afro-centric business coalition puts him in the company of Madam C.J.Walker, Booker T. Washington and Malcolm X.

I have been fascinated with the life and works of old Marcus Garvey since I was a boy growing up in Kingston, Jamaica. My father was an avowed Garveyite. Taking pride in showing off his certificate of investment in the UNIA - The Black Star Line, as well as other mementos & regalia of having been associated with Marcus Garvey. So this book of his poems and speeches are a powerful recollection and endorsement of the power which Marcus Garvey meant within his very progressive association. His poetry are especially enlightening and inspiring, as they speak of his intelligence, as well as his conviction for the important/crucial work in which he is engaged. This book also reminds me that Garvey's ideas still has purpose in our contemporary life in 2017. I also recommend this book as a vital starter for any student or critic of Garvey's life, work & ideas.

Most people don't get to learn about Garvey in school, but I did when I took African American history. It was great to read this book and get a more in depth look into his mind and the objectives of his organization. I think for African Americans, it's important to learn our history outside of what is taught to us. So I think this book is a great read and I recommend it.

This brother was talented and I'm glad I had a chance to hear and read his story for myself, so I don't have to listen hearsay. Nobodys' perfect he was born in the right era to assist the ones after him. Mistakes are what makes us human.

Interesting but the format wasn't what I expected, however, the content tied in with some of the other books I read on the Black History list

This is the part of History that is being ignored. The writings and speeches of Marcus Garvey is good reading. This is the ugly part of how the blacks in America was divided. If we take a look back and picture a America where ALL blacks stook together on one accord for one purpose, it would not be hard to imagine where we would be now. This book takes my mind to that thought. Marcus Garvey was not a racist, he just loved his race. I loved his writing and what he was trying to accomplish!

Bought two as Christmas gifts and one for myself. They arrived in great condition. Never learned this part of history in school...hmm

GREAT READ....A MUST PURCHASE...KNOWLEDGE IS POWER...

The First Story, by C. Bradley Owens

About the Author

C. Bradley Owens was born in the small coal mining town of Grundy, Virginia. After a stint in the suburbs of Chicago, C. Bradley's family settled near the even smaller coal mining town of Haysi, Virginia, where he spent most of his childhood in the woods on the side of a mountain in the heart of the coalfields of Appalachia, dreaming of a larger, more complex world. Through reading, he found a more complex world, and as an adult he seeks to create such a world through his fiction. He writes for all of those children sitting alone in their rooms, whether in the woods or in the city, hoping, longing, wishing for just a glimpse of another world, another possibility. He writes for the outsider in all of us, for the kids that desperately want to fit in but consistently find that they cannot for whatever reason, and he writes to let everyone know that, no matter what age or condition of birth, they are not alone on that mountainside, or in that forest, or in that apartment building, or in that house in the suburbs.

The First Story is a surprise and a delight, combining a keen literary intelligence with a sense of playful wonder. Both the real-world characters and those larger than life beings in the World of Creativity draw one into the book as they fight for existence. Certain beings, like The Growl in the Night, are hauntingly real and will play in one's mind long after the last page is turned. Owens is knowledgeable in terms of archetypes, though never didactic and often whimsical, all within the package of a rollicking good tale. I'm looking forward to seeing what comes next from this author. Brilliant!

I'm not really sure what to think. I'm putting my rating at 3.5 stars for now.Matt and John are two best friends who have a crush on one another, but because their parents aren't too cool with them being gay, keep their feelings hidden. In the meantime, they write stories together, until one day when John is assaulted by some local bullies and lands in the hospital in a coma. Matt then has to finish the story they were both writing in order to wake his best friend. The writing in this book is a bit juvenile; the publishers have set the age rating at 14+ for blood and gore, but I think if you had a mature twelve or thirteen year old who could handle that, this might be a good book for them.We alternate between the two worlds: Matt in the real world by his friend's bedside, and chapters of the fantasy world where these characters reside in a tiffy because Creativity is changing and the First Story was stolen. The fantasy world is interesting; it’s like a mystery of sorts and you have to put all the puzzle pieces together. You think some characters are evil at first then they turn out not to be. There’s constant talk among these characters of “The First Story being stolen” and we’re constantly wondering if it’s Matt who’s inadvertently using the First Story in the style of something like Keys to the Kingdom, or maybe (view spoiler)For a while, as I read, I was getting Princess Tutu vibes (if you've not seen that anime, it's basically a series about a girl who is studying ballet who is actually a duck and the town in which she lives is being controlled by a mysterious storyteller). That anime ended with the most epic of plot twists ever, so I was kind of hoping for an epic plot twist from this as well. Reality and stories intermingle and the two worlds affect each other, and meanwhile we’re not sure who’s really in control of everything. This could have been a lead-in to an amazing twist that either confirms what the reader is suspecting or pulls the rug out from under them and surprises them. Unfortunately, neither of these things happened and I was sorely disappointed by the ending, but I'll talk about that later. This book is very long, and it felt too rushed at times. That, combined with the slightly cliffhanger ending, felt like it should have been split in two. I'm sure there are bits and pieces I missed my first read through, so we'll just say this one requires several rereads to fully grasp what is happening.Though not explicitly mentioned in the blurb or story, our protagonist Matt had some very Asperger's-type characteristics. As a girl myself with Asperger's, I actually identified with his obsession with keeping track of how much time has passed, or thinking of emotions in terms of colors (though it's worth noting that was a huge part of his character at the beginning but then got forgotten about toward the end).I was, admittedly, less invested in the world with the Toy Peddler and the Sister of Monsters than I was in Matt and John's story. Though I will also freely admit that I've been on a contemporary kick lately and that might be why. There were also two characters very similarly named, which is kind of a pet peeve of mine: Flux and Flex, and either they were meant to be different people or else that was a typo. The book was really good and I sped through the entire thing, though the ending was kind of a disappointment. It felt too fairy-tale like. The ending in terms of the fantasy story bit was too rushed and was the part I think needed more time and perhaps another book to flesh out. Though it was ambiguous as to whether Matt was the one in control of the story the entire time or whether the story was its own entity independent of Matt or John, if Matt/John was truly the one writing the story, the story being rushed and feeling a bit incomplete would lend credibility to the theory of teenagers having written it. And the ending in terms of Matt and John's situation was just like... Really? Just like that? I think it needed more setup because right now it just feels like it's walking the fine line between a HEA (Happily Ever After) and a deus ex machina.Nevertheless, it was a good story, and a solid debut novel from the author. Pick this up if you're looking for a fast, light read with an intriguing fantasy world and a rather unique style of storytelling.

With one foot in modern reality and the other in the fantasy realm of Creativity, this is a book you won't want to leave. The language is beautiful and the characters are compelling and strangely familiar, as if you've met them, but you can't quite remember where. This novel is rare in that it has so much to say about the power of storytelling to pull us through dark times, yet it never feels didactic. It's a fantastic read!

This is intricately woven together, with so many interconnecting themes and characters.
