I got this book because I like robots and science fiction. It is interesting to get the history behind robots, computers, and AI. Also the author shared some of their personal memories involved with robots and computers. The author also takes a what if look at what the future may hold in the years of 2030, 2040 and beyond. I like some of the theories presented even if some of them haven't happened. . .yet.Must read for any robot and/or science fiction lovers. You'll enjoy this and find some more books to read (and moviesto watch!). Enjoy!

Started off well, but missed the mark as it went on.

Review originally published at Lomeraniel dot com Audiobookreviews.I rarely read non-fiction, but I found the title and premises of this book appealing. Terry Favro explores how robots were conceived in literature and film, and how that translated into reality. We witness the beginning of simple machines like elevators, and then typewriters and computers; how Gates and Jobs started their journey, and the evolution of AI, driverlerss cars, without forgetting the eternal debate about whether robots will take away our jobs.I found it an interesting book, even though I belong to a newer generation, but it was enjoyable how the robot industry affected Terry Favro and her family. There was a bit of speculation that I enjoyed less, for the simple fact that I didn’t find it realistic enough. I think it is, in general, a good book for sci-fi enthusiasts and people who are curious about the evolution of robots and computers, but maybe a bit too generic if you are looking for a more scientific read.Teri Schnaubelt did a wonderful job narrating this book, keeping it interesting and compelling, and using different voices when Favro was quoting somebody. You can’t go wrong with Schnaubelt!I received a copy of this book in audio format from the narrator in exchange for an honest review.

“I was born in the middle of the big, fat fifties, a decade stuffed with lardy piecrust, Fluffernutters and fear.” And with that brilliant opening line, Terri Favro takes us on a funny, fascinating, deeply felt journey through her generation’s relationships with robots, artificial intelligence and computers.Favro, who is also the author of the critically acclaimed novel sci-fi novel Sputnik’s Children, is a master at physical description, creating closely observed worlds both real and imagined.Because I am a child of the 60s, I especially loved her early chapters about her father, a self taught electrician and inventor who worked with the first factory robot, UNIMATE, which inspired him to build robots at home. One of his first inventions was the driverless lawn-mover, an unheard of technical marvel back then, which Favro describes with her usual affectionate wit:“He started with a simple concept: attach the metal cable to the steering mechanism, jam it in place so that it went in perpetual circles, and let the mower wind itself up until it had cut the equivalent of a UFO crop circle on one side of the lawn, then move the contraption to another side of the lawn and let it cut another huge circle.”Undeterred, her enterprising father moved onto the idea of underground sensors, a prototype of the way that robotic lawnmowers move today. But as Favro notes, he lacked the equipment to turn his robo-mower into reality, and it eventually ended up in a pool.Being an aging boomer means I may one day have to think about caretaking, as I get old and possibly lose my marbles. Here Favro shines, as she envisions a world of kindly cyborg caregivers, whose entire existence will focus on caring for geezers in varying states of physical and mental decline.“They’ll sit with us at meals and encourage us to eat our vegetables,” she writes. They’ll make sure we take our meds, get enough exercise, and don’t get depressed. If we have a bathroom accident or a medical emergency, they’ll summon help. If the kitchen catches fire, they’ll rescue us even if it means sacrificing themselves. An added bonus? You can custom design your caretaking cyborg, choosing a tall, silver, silent type—“handsome, if you’re into the whole “machine man” thing, and dressing him in your preferred styles. But could your sexy, caring robot perform … ahem….more intimate services than making sure you put your Depends on the right way? You betcha, Favro claims. No pearl-clutching moralist, she takes a clear-eyed look at the many benefits of sex dolls, who in the not so distant future can be programmed to love us, assume various positions with their flexible bodies, and respond appropriately to its human lover with pre-programmed pillow talk. As Favro puts pragmatically puts it:“Robots could be great tools for sex therapists, pitching in to help couples experiencing problems in bed. They could be sex workers. Or they could carry on being an enhanced version of what sex dolls really are—a toy.”But would you want your great-grand-nephew to marry one? In one of her most imaginative (but chillingly plausible) chapters, “Sex And the Singularity”, Favro envisions a time, in 2050, where human-robot marriages could be legalized. The wedding is performed in a Singularian church, the name coming from a belief “that we are all moving toward a singular event in history when all artificial intelligence merges into a single superintelligence and enlightened humans (i.e., the Singularitarians) upload their consciousness to conjoin with it.” In other words, some humans will opt to download their consciousness into machine bodies, become robots and conceivably live forever.Experts are still divided as to whether this will actually happen or not. “It isn’t easy to separate the bizarre from the possible.” Favro writes, in summing it all up. But for anyone interested in robots, past, present and future, her book is a wonderful look into our long-awaited World of Tomorrow.

This was a very interesting and fun book to listen to.The topics it covered were many.Teri Schnaubelt was a terrific narrator..I was given this book by the narrator, author or publisher free for an honest review.

Brad Thor’s plots are always timely but “Spymaster” is eerily so. A subversive plan by Russia to pull the U.S. into a war in the Baltic region by attacking a small NATO ally, is well within the bounds of credibility. Scarily so. Scott Harvath is tasked with conducting counter measures to thwart the plan. He puts together a crack team using some long-time operators and a few new ones that appear to have the same fire in the belly drive that he does. Thor pulls no punches about his conservative political views and that’s okay by me as long as he doesn’t go off the deep end and get too preachy. I rather liked the more mature philosophical Harvath, who is questioning his own ambitions and expectations for the near and the more remote future. In this 18th book of Scott Harvath’s adventures, Thor has crafted a complex and gripping plot that we can only hope remains firmly in the fictional category because having it become a reality is just too scary to fathom.

This is a very, very good new novel from Mr. Thor. Completely aligned with the current headlines political issues. It is somewhat frightening in that Mr. Thor seems to have a better grip on global geopolitics than any of our current elected representatives. Spy Master tugs at the frightening and still unresolved issues at the heart of the U.S. intelligence community, and raises the critical question of whether our current government agencies are still capable of competing in the modern world of espionage. I think that, ultimately, his answer is that they cannot. I have no background in intelligence ops, but I tend to agree, based on a lot of reading I have done. In my mind, the question that hangs over this novel is whether the Blackwater (now named something else) model is any better? What about accountability. The crux of the Horvath novels is that he, alone (with a competent but small team of specialists) can reliably solve world-shaking issues. I'm not sure that is realistic. But this makes for a great novel! Many of us have seen the video of contractors shooting innocent (?) people from a helicopter in Iraq and laughing about it. Perhaps they weren't all innocent, but the ones attempting to rescue the wounded didn't deserve to be obliterated by gunfire. In our current asymmetric warfare endeavors, which are ongoing in about 133 countries, the boundary between aggressor and defender is nebulous. This concerns me greatly, because our incursion into so many countries, especially in Africa, is not making us any friends. Just review history to see how previous interference in other countries' affairs has worked out for us.OK, enough political stuff. Back to the novel. I bonded with the characters, especially the new addition, Jasinski, and, although the novel was too long for me to read in one sitting, I definitely wanted to! I would say that this is one of Thor's best. Warning: here is a cliff-hanger ending. But that only means that we can at least expect one more novel featuring Scot Horvath.

I have read every book in this series. And it's good to see that the author is showing the evolution and growth of Scot. He's gotten older and now having to rely on his team and instincts. No longer is he the superman but he's still awesome. The story is good and involves the Russians and their ability to manipulate elections and NATO countries. This book is consistent with present day current events. It's intriguing and there's a bit of a cliffhanger ending. This just sits up the next book in this series.

Nobody likes cliffhangers. The non-ending of this book completely makes it a waste of time to read. It's a cheap unprofessional trick to make people buy the next book. I shall not I'm done with Brad Thor. I read all of the other books I will read him no more. he should retire.

Any book Brad Thor writes keeps the secrets and excitement flowing and hard to put down for any length of time. His stories reflect modern day problems heard on the news and news talk programs. I have recommended this book to friends telling them that they won’t be disappointed. Keep writing Brad!

What sets Thor apart from so many in this genre is his ability to keep it real. Some of his plots and subplots seem torn from actual headlines and real world events. It's no small feat, especially in this day and age, and he does it seamlessly. That aspect alone pulls in the reader to a deeper experience than most novelists can.Horvath and his elite team are presented and explored as warriors we actually hope exist, rather than as impossible caricatures of Rambo, and this is where Thor really shines. You don't just root for Harvath and his team of elite manhunters, you fall almost in step with them. His deft ability to humanize every character, good and bad, is just unparalleled. In Spymaster, the character Chase is especially intriguing, and Thor blends him in to the story so well that you just believe he's real, or at least that, like Harvath, just his name has been changed to protect his real life counterpart's true identity.Spymaster is the 18th book in the Harvath series, yet, every book is fresh and enthralling. That is a Herculean achievement in and of itself. You can't put it down, and you can't wait for the next installment. Thor does his homework, and so the world his characters operate in is utterly believable.Step into Harvath's world for a while, and take a break from ours. You'll feel like you were on the mental vacation of a lifetime.

Brad Thor has hit it out of the park with Spymaster, the latest Scot Harvath thriller. With a Russian invasion of the Baltic states imminent, Scot and his team must track down the Russian mastermind behind a series of devastating attacks on civilians.I couldn’t put it down!

I thoroughly enjoyed the Spymaster. Another Scot Harvath novel which was action packed and very entertaining. These novels always give me a break from reality and provide a relaxing and entertaining way to spend some downtime. The book kept moving and kept you thinking. Brad Thor’s novels are always a fun and enjoyable read. The ending left open another door for the next episode as Scot and the Company transition into a new era.

Amazon.com Review

The computing world today is in the middle of a revolution: mobile clients and cloud computing have emerged as the dominant paradigms driving programming and hardware innovation today. The fifth edition of Computer Architecture focuses on this dramatic shift, exploring the ways in which software and technology in the cloud are accessed by cell phones, tablets, laptops, and other mobile computing devices. Each chapter includes two real-world examples, one mobile and one data center, to illustrate this revolutionary change. Updated to cover the mobile computing revolution. Emphasizes the two most important topics in architecture today: memory hierarchy and parallelism in all its forms. Develops common themes throughout each chapter: power, performance, cost, dependability, protection, programming models, and emerging trends ("What's Next"). Includes three review appendices in the printed text. Additional reference appendices are available online. Includes updated case studies and completely new exercises. New this Edition Each chapter includes two new, real-world examples, one mobile and one data center, to illustrate the revolutionary change to personal mobile devices and cloud computing. Review

"What has made this book an enduring classic is that each edition is not an update, but an extensive revision that presents the most current information and unparalleled insight into this fascinating and fast changing field. For me, after over twenty years in this profession, it is also another opportunity to experience that student-grade admiration for two remarkable teachers." ― From the Foreword by Luiz André Barroso, Google, Inc. "This is an academic textbook that is also suitable for a far broader readership. Each chapter is organised in the same structure, with the main content supported by case studies and exercises… Having read this book I now have a far better understanding of why processors from all the different designers and manufacturers are so different. Memory hierarchies, multicore architectures and compiler optimisation are all covered in great detail. I was particularly interested in their discussion of graphical processing units and how they are suitable for far more than just graphical workloads… What is great about this book is that it moves with the times. There is a lot of content on processors for mobile computing, and power usage is a pervasive theme. At the other extreme there is an excellent chapter on warehouse scale computers, which offers tremendous insight into the cloud computing infrastructure provided by Google, Amazon and others. If your job has anything to do with IT infrastructure then I recommend this book as a must-read. As an academic text book it has both depth and breadth. And if you're just interested in the topic you'll gain a huge amount of insight into the fundamentals of computer architecture."--The Chartered Institute for IT

#154,094 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)

I'm using this book for a graduate course in Computer System Design. It's a great book, well put together, and very interesting. What is needed is a new edition. This book was written during the days of the single core processor speed wars around 2005. Since then there was the core war (2 cores, 4 cores, 6 cores on desktop computer systems), and today the explosion in technical advances with mobile devices. A year ago it was the speed war up to the 1 GHz mark, and today mobile hand-held devices are being released with 1 GHz dual-core processors, and even announcements of quad core mobile devices by the end of the year. It's a much different world than it was in the Pentium 4 days. The information, equations, etc are spot on, as this is the bible for this information. But reading a book that often references 6-7 year old technologies as current or up and coming, at times it feel more like reading a well written history book. It would be interesting to see references and discussions on the computer architectures in modern mobile devices, as these pocket sized computer systems are increasingly becoming a part of everyone's lives today.

It's a okay read for a first timer like me. I wish it was structured a little better. It jumps around quite a bit. It's not an easy read for a person like me with a mechanical engineering background. But as of now, it's a good reference book. I would recommend it. The diagrams help. But the contents do seem a bit outdated and I'm sure there may be books out there with better layouts.

This book isn't for the timid. It goes deep into several recent CPU designs and explains why the architectures turned out the way they did. There is decent coverage of RISC versus CISC ideas, and why CISC now dominates (hint: it is a combination of luck, marketing, and massive amounts of available transistors, plus new ways of instruction-level parallelism). It does not cover the absolute latest processors. But it doesn't have to. It will give you the background needed that when you go to the website that have technical details of a new architecture (e.g. Ars Technica), chances are good you will know the concepts they reference.Who shouldn't buy this: Programmer's in high level languages expecting to learn some black magic way to speed up your code. Even assembly language programmers have been mostly sidelined by the power of a modern CPU to optimize high-level languages.

I've owned every edition of this wonderful book. Thank you Prof. Hennessy and Patterson, as well as all other contributors for writing such an approachable book, not only for students, but also for practitioners. This edition brings the book up to date with the developments in computer architecture and various surrounding technologies, such as memory, disk, etc.The GPU chapter was fun to read.

If it had a more memorable mascot (such as the dragon book), this would likely have a more communicated handle; if you need to know about architecture, this is it. It explains numerous avenues to pursue performance gains, and gives actual calculations to project the implications of design decisions. Far from being stuck on the general inner workings of a PC, this also delves into warehouse-scale computing and explains other ways of constructing computers than the simple models of working but exceedingly out of date designs. This book is heavy enough to concuss someone with it with a good swing, and there's almost an equal number of pages in accompanying appendices in digital format. That is a lot of material, but it goes a great deal into the minutiae of the low level functions that you probably didn't learn correctly the first time around. Knowledge of basic digital design, organization, a C-based language and familiarity with generic assembly is recommended before tackling this thing.

Brand new "used" book! But it seems that it is too much for a single class.

The authors of this text are THE experts on the material, atleast involving MIPS, and it is evident. however, sometimes i get lost in the details and dont really absorb as much as i do from other texts. i had this same issue with the Computer Organization book written by Hennessey.

For those who have never read this book, I'd emphasize that this is not a computer architecture book that explains some basic stuffs. Instead, this book focuses more on the performance aspect of the computers and I'd say this is the ONLY worthwhile book that discusses from that viewpoint. So, if you are to study the computer performance, your choice is either reading this book or reading tons of papers published by researchers or both. It means you must have a good understanding on the computer architecture before reading this book.My only complaint is that though the book is available only with paperback now, they didn't reduce the price. It's still worth the price, though.
