Definitely a lot of interesting information and insight into the psychological perspective of a top athlete. In a lot of ways the book is more about how James "feels" about various events, circumstances, victories, and failures. At times, it's quite interesting to see just how much of an emotional rollercoaster his career is, full of the highs and lows of winning, losing, being injured, and being bored with inactivity. At other times there's an intense anger, indignation, and arrogance that is both repugnant, yet also honestly portrayed, which ironically is the one thing that seems humble about the author's life. I came away with a lot of mixed feelings about James Willstrop as a person and as a player. I'm undecided as to whether his work ethos is really as grand as he proclaims it to be and undecided if his anti-social behavior outside of the court is truly justified. Frankly, the fellow seems to demonstrate knowledge in a very narrow band of experience (just competitive squash) and his approach to life as a result is somewhat strange and alien to most people. I wanted to chide him for telling an amateur club player that he wouldn't play him unless he was paid to...but perhaps it's not that he was wrong to turn down an amateur, but that he was wrong to be so upset about it.There is a lot of discussion of his mother and her battle with cancer as well. This is a sensitive topic, but I'm not sure how much of its inclusion is really an honest appraisal of a squash career and how much it just feels like the sort of obligatory "tragedy" that Bob Costas would have milked relentlessly in regards to any Olympic athlete. Having also lost my mother to cancer (when I was 16), I find it hard to relate to the idea that it has vastly shaped my career or that it's a noteworthy aspect of who I am - but everyone interprets grief differently, so I can't completely fault Willstrop for bringing it up.I would have vastly preferred a great deal more information about the ins and outs of training for squash, what works and what doesn't work, what strategies to apply, what drills etc. But this is more of an autobiography than a squash training manual, so don't get your hopes up on becoming a better player as a result of the book. Instead take it more as a bizarre journey into a very harsh and often unpleasant sports career.

I was really impressed with James' writing style and the way this book read, as it was not ghost written.. It's such a good read you're going to blow right through it. He covers a year of his life on the way to his #1 ranking. At the same time he hits a lot of flashbacks of his youth and how he arrived at where he is as a professional athlete. He tells a very honest story, going into detail about his obsessive compulsive habits, some of which we all have.. Anyone who has lost a parent to cancer can relate and appreciate James's relationship with his mother.I highly recommend this book, not only to squash players but to anyone who enjoys autobiographies by great writers.I would love to See James write a book on Squash Training & Fitness, amassing all he's learned throughout the years. I really think his honest approach to writing would result in a much needed book on the modern approach to squash training.

Pretty boring and a little tragic. Way too much personal stuff overwhelming the squash. I know it's a personal story, but after a while it became kind of boring. Recommended only for very serious fans.

I really enjoyed this book. In fact I couldn't put it down once I picked it up.It delivers an open and honest insight in to the mind of James Wilstrop and a fascinating look at what it takes to be a World Class squash player. From the rivalry with Nick Matthew, to life with a dad as a coach, with insight into his levels of obsessive compulsiveness, and taking on board the effects of his mom dying too soon, James tackles all topics and delivers both a gripping story and a very human one.For anyone who's ever picked up a squash racket or a racket of any sort and wondered what is going on in the heads of the top players then this book is a must read.

As a intermediate-level recreational squash player who plays 2 to 3 times a week (if I am in a city that has good squash court), it is easy to recommend this book to both squash players and non-players. I found it refreshing to have a first hand peak into the mind of professional squash player, James Willstrop. As I read the book I was reminded how lucky I am to be a recreational squash player, someone who plays for fun, versus someone who tours the world and plays for money.James Willstrop shares the pain and suffering of a pro as he travels from tournament to tournament, following an often brutal travel schedule, to compete in perhaps the most demanding, underrated and unappreciated sport today. Constantly on guard for colds, flu, infections, food poisoning, sleepless nights, fatigue, injuries, stress, isolation, depression and loneliness, James Willstrop paints a somewhat bleak picture of the life of a world class, professional squash player. All I could think during my time reading James' thoughts were "what a tough and unappreciated way to make a living"; there was little to no glamour or celebrity appeal to speak of in James Willstrop story; however, there was plenty of agony, pain and suffering.I'm not sure how reading this insightful book will effect my "fun and friendly" squash play or even my active sports lifestyle in general; but I did develop a deeper respect and sympathy for these touring players; and as mentioned, am thankful I can rest as much as I like between matches and cancel a match if I feel sick or fatigued; options mostly not available to these touring pros. It's one thing to be a great player, but it's quite another thing to be a happy, healthy, great touring squash player; and James Willstrop accounting of his life as a squash pro takes the shimmer and shine out of the "outsiders view" of professional squash play; something that we would not have at our fingertips if it was not for James Willstrop writing this account of his life as a pro. Thank you James and best of luck to you in your career! I will be following you more closely and cheering you on.

This book is a rehash of old material. I’ve been a Star Wars geek for 42 years and I must say that there is nothing new and inspiring in this incredibly expensive book. And you should also note that the interviews and opinions expressed within these pages were made decades after the films were released. I make this point because George Lucas has consistently tried to reshape his image by contradicting his vision of Star Wars from back when he was a struggling and humble film maker, not the arrogant prima dona that he is today. Many years ago I purchased “The Making Of” book series of Star Wars, Empire Strikes Back and Return Of The Jedi. These three books are still available on Amazon and for a total cost of this Star Wars Archeives book. What sets the “Making Of” books apart from this book is the interviews recorded I those books were actual words spoken back when they were making the films - not ten, twenty, thirty years after the fact. So you get a feel for what was in the heads of the people directly associated with the making of the films as it happened. None of the artwork or photographs in The Star Wars Archeives book are new. Everything contained within this massive book has been published before. If this book was priced In the $70.00 to $80.00 range, I might consider purchasing it for my extensive Star Wars library. But as it is, it’s overpriced.

I was not going to write a review of this book, but the negative first comment made me want to give my two cents as a counter balance.First of all, this thing is massive. Quite a bit bigger than Rinzler's books- it's more comparable to the size of the "Star Wars: Frames" collection.Secondly, the reviewer before me contradicts himself. Is there no new material or is the new material full of lies from George Lucas? The answer is C- there is plenty of fresh content in here, especially about Lucas' early films, and I'm of the opinion that Lucas is not the liar that a vocal minority of the population tries to pass off as the dominant opinion.Anyway, R. Wise gives me weird vibes and I didn't want the crotchety Star Wars "fans" of old to control the narrative.Of course this book overlaps toan extent with other BTS documentation for Star Wars, but the presentation and angle taken keep it from feeling like a total retread of Rinzler's books.

Ok...first off this is an absolutely gorgeous book that's beautifully designed. And it's HUGE and HEAVY. Therein lies one of the big differences between this and the Rinzler series of "making of" books. This book, while it has text running throughout...is less academic than those volumes and more about a knockout visual presentation. (That said, the Rinzler series are also extremely well done and essential for any Star Wars fan) The pictures... and there are many, many, that you've likely never seen before...are as big as this HUGE book...did I mention it's HUGE? ....and are crystal clear. I found myself looking at a lot of pictures that I've seen many times before in a new light due to the size alone. Now if you don't own any previous Star Wars books of this kind...prepare to have your mind blown. And once you've recovered, go get the Rinzler books for a deeper dive. And, as mentioned earlier, even if you own the Rinzler series, you'll find this an awesome companion piece to go with those. (Bonus points if you also pick up the two-volume oversized Ralph Mcquarrie art books) But what about the price? Well, it's crazy expensive at its retail price point, but it's Amazon so you know the game...just wait. It will come down at some point. Highly recommended and essential for any original trilogy Star Wars fan.

Big beautiful book.Without a doubt, one of the most beautiful books about the original trilogy. Duncan has done his research and it shows. The book is organized chronologically and it is full of tons of images I had never seen before. But images aside, the wealth of information is truly inspiring. Quite simply, a beautiful piece of work. The book was not cheap, but it was worth every single penny. Without a doubt, this has instantly became the highlight of my Star Wars reference materials/books.Pick this up as soon as you can—you won’t regret it.The Force is strong with this one.

I can’t begin to explain the number of books I’ve gone through regarding the making of The Star Wars Trilogy...I own the three incredible books by J.W. Rinzler and the two massive volumes on Ralph McQuarrie’s art and this book book blows them both out of the water. This book blew my mind. It is stunning from the first page to the last page. Usually I can find a problem with a book, or something I don’t like: something is missing, too much time is spent on one area, not enough art work is included, it’s not laid out thoughtfully... etc and this book LITTERALLY, has it all. I can’t say enough about it. The chronology is amazing. The flow is scene to scene from beginning to end. My only two slight negatives would be that the book is incredibly heavy and large. It’s not a very practical book in that regard. But, being so large makes the pictures so vibrant and enjoyable. And second, a few times they chose to put an incredible photo, usually a McQuarrie piece of art, right across the center of the book, wrapping onto the other page...and that is a pet peeve of mine. I’d rather a slightly smaller image that fits fully on one page. But they only did it a few times. I recommend this book so highly, it is well worth $160-$220. Buyers/Collectors should buy with extreme confidence and anticipation!

t❤️❤️This was not a bad book. Pretty hefty and it does cover some of the stuff covered in other materials, but for the price there are stuff in there that I had not seen in quite awhile. Let’s face it, Star Wars was big and it went through a lot of iterations before the final product was released and even then, its gone through numerous additions and deletions. This book is a must have if you are. STAR WARS FAN.

In the Authors notes at the end of this 450 page short story, James Patterson asks his readers not go give up on Alex Cross. If Patterson has to make plea to his loyal fans he already knows he hasn't given his fans what we have come to expect. I except that tragedy in life happens to good people Patterson asks his fans to believe and accept we are needing to have faith in the human spirit to pull us through a difficult or life changing event. He shouldn't have to tell us to keep the faith. We know it.I feel you already have the next Alex Cross book written. Why should your fans have to buy another book to find out how this book should have ended.. To drag this out even for ten days is letting evil win. All of Alex Cross books have always taken fans though difficult situations and some cliff hangers. This is not a cliff hanger it is a stall Patterson is holding the ending hostage. I as a long time fan of all Patterson's books feel cheated. Patterson brings the reader through the story to the point that Alex pulls it together and is ready to go after Marcus Sunday and then the story just stops. Cross My Heart was a 5 star book up until the end of Chapter 112 when it dropped to a reluctant 2 star rating. I am sure your readers wouldn't mind if you had needed to expand Cross My Heart from 450 pages to 650 pagesYou write a message telling us we will see another Alex Cross book. Of course we will see another Alex Cross book but will anyone want to buy the book. The fans were hung out to dry for a long time. For almost 14 months fans were waiting for the predictable ending to the Michael Bennett crisis. As a loyal fan I feel Patterson has not shown his loyal fans the respect we deserve.

Cheap trick at the end to get you to buy the next book; I am a James Patterson lover, I have read almost all his books, but this one and Gone, the last two I read, just weren't up to the level of his other books. This book was contrived, impossible, and predictable.

Like many other reviewers I am an avid Alex Cross fan, having read every single one of his books. When I got to the end of this one I felt cheated because the ending was missing, like someone ripped the final chapters out of the book (which is hard to do on a Kindle). I would have bought the next book anyway; there was no need to leave your faithful readers hanging.

What a cheap shot to all your fans to write an Alex Cross story with a "to be continued" ending.....SHAME ON YOU !!! After 400+ pages....REALLY....wait til sometime next year to find out....I don't think so.

While the book was good, it's hard to overlook what appears a betrayal by the author. Patterson's books have been getting shorter and more trite over the past several years. You get the preview (which is a real selling point) but then upon purchasing for anywhere from $12 -$16, you get something you can read in a couple to three hours. This book, however, is very good, and I had hopes Patterson's ghost writer or collaborator was on to something. Only to be left with a half finished book. Patterson himself was aware of this, hence his note to readers at the end spewing some story that he really was not duping writers, he was doing it for the good of change that all series must have. Ok fine! He could given it to us in another 100 pages and had a gripping novel. Instead he is tapping it out to his next novel in the series, next year. I felt cheated and used as if Patterson didn't trust his readers to be in board with that and needed a year to digest the change. Well here is the change: it was a sorry trick and came across insulting to the intelligence of the reader. Maybe has millions of $'s and can spend on limitless entertainment, but most of his fans make an investment in the books they choose to read. IMO, the follow up to this book should be gratis.

The idea of kids with superpowers should be terrifying. It’s not, or at least not in this series. This novel manages to have comic book imagery without being a graphic novel. Imagine six-year old Angel with her beautiful wings and gills flying gracefully or swimming in the ocean. Imagine the fashion conscious Nudge. I keep getting beautiful images of these children at times like when they have a water balloon fight. The author manages to weave in lessons abut the dangers facing planet Earth and how important it is to save it and ourselves. The message is subtle and the book stays enjoyable. It has been too long since I read the last book in the series, so it took me a minute to catch up with the bird kids and their dog, Total. The kids now have gills so they can survive under water as well as in the sky and Total now has wings. Cool. But they keep developing new powers to cope with each danger. Is that playing fair with readers who expect characters to cope with what they already have - even if what they have are super powers. Maybe the kids already have too many super powers. It’s hard to keep track of them all. I even have to take notes on the characters. Iggy is blind; Gasman is handy with bombs. Fang is Max’s love interest, and Angel is evolving faster than the others. Total the dog has a crush on a pure bred Akita. I loved the part where the U.S. Navy tried to teach the kids basic training. After what these kids have been through in the novels so far, there isn’t much more about survival that they can learn. Tough survival instructors got a lesson from a six year old. The flock always seem more than up to whatever dangers that face them.

What a crappy way to sell books. Unless you are willing to pay for TWO BOOKS, don't buy this book. It has no ending. After 400 plus pages, the reader is left hanging and told that they have to buy the second book when it becomes available to know how the first book ends!!!!!!!!!!!! I cannot believe that James Patterson would do such a thing to his loyal cadre of readers. Last Patterson book that his disappointed fan will buy!!!

Kathy Garver’s career as an actress began when she was 5 and still continues. She first appeared in “The Ten Commandments” and has been on TV, in movies, on stage, and done voice work regularly since. She made the difficult transition from child actress to adult actress and not only survived but thrived. Kathy Garver is a nice person. And this may be what makes her autobiography somewhat unique, refreshing, and inspiring. With a loving and supportive family, a strong faith, a good work ethic, and by treating her co-workers (after all, acting is a job) with respect and even affection, her story is the antithesis of what we have come to expect of the show biz bio. This is a “tell all” but if you are looking for drug addiction, alcohol abuse, scrapes with the law, hotel brawls with the concierge, juicy tidbits about other actors, and endless sexual escapades, you are looking in the wrong place. In many ways, Kathy’s life is probably more the typical story of thousands of actors and actresses that love their craft, strive to be better at it and are able to spend their lives doing what they love.Like perhaps 1000s of her professional colleagues, Kathy had her “moment in the sun” with one role that the vast majority of people identify her with, in this case Cissy, the oldest sister, on the much, and justly, loved “Family Affair” with Brian Keith, Sebastian Cabot, Anissa Jones, and Johnny Whitaker, and Kathy devotes a number of pages to that series, its impact on her life, and her relationship with everyone involved. One of the best sections in the book, is her reflections on Anissa Jones, who tried to escape celebrity in anonymity, instead found demons in drugs, and ended up alone and dead at age 18. This tale could have been preachy, scandalous, maudlin, and/or exploitive. Instead it is sensitive, tragic, and contains Kathy’s own regret of perhaps not doing all she could to help. Kathy also writes of her affection and respect for Brian Keith, both as friend and actor, and her sadness of his descent into suicide. So, if this celebrity “tell all” is not riddled with tabloid stories, why read it? Because it is a good solid story of a good solid actress, the people that have touched her life, the lives she has impacted both personally and through her work, and to demonstrate that professional actors do not have to constantly grab the headlines or live “train wreck” lives to succeed. Kathy Garver’s “Surviving Cissy” is not about surviving drugs, alcohol, sexual abuse, or prison;, it is about surviving success without letting it destroy who she is. And this may be one of the most difficult things to survive. “Surviving Cissy” is well worth the time.(In the interest of full disclosure, let me say I know Kathy Garver. I had the privilege of being on stage with her in one of the theatrical events she writes about and have had a hand (albeit small) in another play she writes about. )

I’ll tell you what: I’m really glad I read this book before looking at the negative customer reviews. If I’d read those reviews first, I wouldn’t have bought the book and, thus, would’ve missed out on a really interesting read. I appreciate the fact that Kathy resisted the urge to spew dirt about her costars but, instead, remembered them with warm fondness and honesty. It’s great, too, that she tells us a bit about the many people who have come into her life. Not only does this book tell us about people, but also about the entertainment industry and its many facets. What an education we get! Thank you, Kathy, for taking the time out of your very busy life to write this fine book.

Very very detailed. Got bogged down with the small details of each person mentioned to the extent it was distracting and sometimes got off track. Enjoyed the section related to Family Affair. A bit more editing may have helped this book flow better. Was nice to remember Family Affair with fondness!

Kathy Garver takes us on her journey from a beautiful child star to a beautiful adult star and person.I never realized the multitudes of talents her resume possesses. We've probably have seen and heard (animation) her but never realized that was Kathy. She had some roadblocks in life but showed just how strong a women she is by pile driving through them instead of succumbing.I would have liked more anecdotes and recollections from her "Family Affair" days but what she wrote was nice. (Maybe in her follow-up book). It's nice to see a child star not get "eaten up" by Hollywood. This star ate up Hollywood.

"Family Affair" remains one of my childhood's fondest memories. It spoke to my heart & has remained there ever since. In recent years, I've had the great pleasure of meeting "Cissy" & "Jody," now all grown-up. Kathy and her co-star, Johnnie Whitaker are warm, kind, caring individuals, both of whom would indeed make "Uncle Bill" & "Mr. French" very proud! I enjoyed "Surviving Cissy" & commend Kathy for her efforts! Bravo!

I enjoyed reading this book by Kathy. She is a very nice person as I have corresponded with her many times over the years. It was sad to hear about Anissa Jones untimely death and refreshing to know that Kathy made it out from child actress to adult unscathed. There are so many that do not make it out successfully.

Interesting read. I wondered what happened to her and how her career started. Loved her in the day.

I rarely write review's but Kathy Garver's book deserves one! Many of us grew up with Kathy as a role model and you can see why from her book. It is funny and wise and never mean spirited like so many Hollywood memoirs. I started the book as a fan but after I was done I felt like I had made a new friend who graciously shared her life story with me. Thank you for this precious gift Kathy Garver!

Grace Hartigan was never one of my preferred painters, Abstract Expressionist or otherwise. So I am probably disinclined to be excited by a book about her. But I did read it and it both lowered and increased my opinion of her. She was off-putting and rather mean. She made the most of her ability when she was young and painted some very lovely abstract paintings. Her later figurative paintings are of slight interest (to me and to art history.) She was a far better painter when she was young. Given what Curtis had to work with, she did a good job of illuminating Hartigan's work and social environment. One thing was quite odd though-Hartigan, in the most interesting phase of her life, was very close to the poet Frank O'Hara (whom she dumped for unclear reasons.) In this bio he is not referred to again-not even when he suddenly died when he was 40 in 1966. There is no mention of Hartigan's reaction to his death. This seemed odd to me. Another interesting part of her long life is her on and off friendships with the other female painters of her generation: Joan Mitchell, Lee Krasner and Helen Frankenthaler. I enjoyed learning about their long friendships with each other, both the highs and the lows.

excellent book...it captures Grace's personality, paintings. friends, thoughts ....all of it.... the profane and the transcendent.....Curtis has documented the time period as well.....I know this because I was there.... carefully researched and descriptive down to the essence of conversations..........

A fascinating, thoroughly researched and highly engaging portrait of an important artist who finally gets her due, thanks to Cathy Curtis's book. I knew little about Grace Hartigan beforehand, but the drama of her life as presented here quickly drew me in. The author strikes a rare balance between, on the one hand, empathy and understanding for her subject and, on the other hand, objective assessment of human flaws and challenges. This biography is multi-dimensional and richly rewarding for the reader.

I'm not an artist or an art history major - but I like art and I like reading bios of artists. I was really excited to see this as I have always wanted to know more about Grace Hartigan - beyond her work there were a couple of pictures of her I had seen from the 1950's - always laughing and seemingly reallly enjoying life. In some ways I wish what my fantasies were more in line with reality - but the credit here goes to Curtis who does not sugarcoat a thing ---I read one review that suggested the narrative bogged down in parts - perhaps. I too was more interested in the 1950's than her later work - but the fact is she had a long life and never quit producing - and it seems like many greats in any discipline it was her and her work that mattered to her more than others at times. I agree also with another reviewer, I hope Cathy Curtis is already at work on another book.

very informative

If i was not such a Hartigan fan, i would have put this down. Rather a snore of a read to my pov.

Grace Hartigan was a DAME. Drank, smoked, slept around, swore like a sailor. But more importantly she painted with PASSION. Coming of age alongside landmark artists like Wilhem DeKooning, Grace had a long hard slog establishing herself. Not until later in life did anything ever come easily for Grace.Very well written book, and it offers interesting insight into Hartigan's creative process. The story is quite colorful, and Grace Hartigan - although I had never heard of her - had an extremely colorful personality. Sure she could be a joy to be around, but without warning she could also cut people to shreds, including her own family.Grace lived a long and very full life, so understandably the narrative can drag a bit in spots. However, overall I enjoyed this thoroughly, and recommend this well researched biography to those interested in the seminal New York art scene of the 40s through 50s.Full Disclosure: received an Advance Review e-copy from netgalley.com

I received text-only publisher's copy which I did not expect. Very disappointed...

#65,662 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

I was glad to have read it, but the format detracts from its efficacy. The first half of the book is based on "Morita Therapy," which, if you aren't already familiar with it (as I wasn't) is both novel and helpful. But the author proclaims a deliberate effort to avoid producing "just another productivity book," and in doing so constructs the latter half of the book out of personal essays from a variety of contributors, and even a poem, nearly all of which are repetitive, anecdotal, and do not offer any deeper instruction than what is discussed in the first half. A bit disappointing in that respect, as the first half feels like an intro and seems to leave a lot of room for exploration. I don't regret buying it, but I would have preferred to pay half as much for half the book.

This book warrants my first review after years of reading books on Amazon. I've read many self-improvement books, and this book has made the most tremendous impact on me. Its primary concept is so simple yet so powerful: do what needs to be done regardless of how you feel - take action according to the needs of a situation, not according to the needs of your emotional state. Simply put, focus on doing rather than feeling. When you do this consistently, not only will your productivity increase but your mental health will substantially improve. DO consistently and DO gently - it's not about forcing yourself to do things or psyching yourself up to JUST DO IT! and intensifying your life. It's about consistently doing what you know needs to be done without thinking about it. There's a ubiquitous misconception in our comfortable & stimulating modern society that we should feel fully motivated to do something and feel good while doing it. Once you realize that is not true - you do not need to feel motivated to take action and you do not need to feel good while getting something done - then you will be on your way to significantly improving every facet of your life. And over time you will feel so much better in general. It's not hard. It just takes practice and consistency. I'm truly grateful for this book's many great ideas to help implement the wonderful concept of taking action. Very highly recommended.

So well written, this book caused me to look at my life and realize that my life is not a to do list. I am routinely overwhelmed and naturally an anxious person. By giving me a different set of tools, this book has given me hope to overcome my own paralysis and inaction from being overwhelmed. Amazing how just thinking a bit differently can make all the difference. Highly recommended.

For anyone who truly has issues taking correct and timely life actions due to depression, procrastination or loss/lack of focus, this book is useless (and an insult). The book offers no help other than the classic NIKE slogan of "Just Do It"! If people could "Just Do It", they would be doing it. It's kind of like saying people should pulled themselves up from their bootstraps. The book is an exercise in ego pumping for folks that already are accomplished and get life's little tasks done without much trouble. It's a reaffirmation for the successful that they are great and doing everything well.God help those who really have issues. This book misses the boat of so many levels.1. Knowing that you have a problem does not fix the problem - that's why people spend money to buy the book for help.2. Telling folks to get off their butts and "Just Do It" is far from helpful.3. The author continually preening about how great and successful they are because they do all the right stuff is insulting.4. All the Japanese Psychology Mumbo-Jumbo is difficult to read and comprehend.Don't be fooled, the Japanese have more problems than we do.My Advice - Take immediate action and DO NOT buy this book.

This is another wonderful exercise in sharing the Naikan and Morita experience that is offered by Gregg Krech. I am a psychiatrist who is trained in the Western allopathic methods of care. I find that often times, the Western method neglects the personal stories of patients. The psychological histories that we gather are often focused on pathology. Not only the patient's pathology but the family pathology as well. There is in my opinion, a skewed approach that is based on illness and deficiency. That skewed approach depends to a great degree upon identifying who is at fault in relationships and who was the victim in the relationships with others. Naikan approaches allow for a more truthful and honest telling of the story that brings balance to the experience. Another aspect of traditional Western healing methods is the sense that one cannot move forwards until "what was wrong", is made right. This can take time and does not allow for moving forward when the "other" in the dyad of the relationship is not willing to meet the patient "halfway". Morita approaches facilitate the patient or individual's moving forward towards healing. Often times, the major impediment is waiting until feelings about the relationship change before taking the necessary actions for change. Regardless of the feelings, most individuals want the relationship status to become different and Morita approaches allows actions to take place while feelings change.I utilize these approaches in my practice and find that meaningful insights and productive change often occurs within a relatively short period of time if the patient commits to the interventions offered. Of course, everyone does not engage in the practices of Naikan and Morita therapy. Many individuals do not, for whatever reason, proceed beyond the pre-contemplation stage of readiness for change. Some people find that for cultural reasons that these Eastern approaches would not work for them. Sometimes individuals are in a "New Age" frame of mind and are shopping for a quick fix which is not the goal of either of these methods. These Eastern approaches require long term commitment and sustained effort that do not depend on the skill of the therapist or provider.Rather these quiet therapies depend on the individual's honest and courageous approach of inward looking as well as taking action when one "does not feel like it." Everyone who is exposed to these quiet therapies will not necessarily find them useful but in my experience, many do.In closing, Gregg Krech presented what is a nice introduction to how the Naikan and Morita approaches can be utilized to begin physical, mental and spiritual well being. Further study and experience is necessary for a full effect. No one should expect a comprehensive explanation of these deep practices in a book of any length, but this book is a very good place to start.

Holy unputdownable, Batman.GRADE: A5 STARSSEE ALL THE STARS is one of those books that gave me a tingle in my stomach, an excitement that only book lovers can understand. Even in the first chapter, I knew I was reading something special. Kit Frick’s gorgeous words danced off the page into my mind. And heart. I wanted to read quickly to see the source of Ellory‘s pain, but slowly to savor the story. I knew I’d reread immediately after finished.Although I have an ARC, I pre ordered SEE ALL THE STARS for my Kindle. That’s how much I fell in love with Ellory and her story. She narrates the story from then, beginning the summer before junior year, to now, the start of senior year in alternating chapters. Something happened to shatter Ellory’s life and her friendships. What, we do not know. She’s no longer friends with her inner circle, including the troubled, yet alluring Ret. Matthias is no longer Ellory’s boyfriend. Her classmates alternate from ignoring her to bullying. When former friends try to reach out, Ellory pushes them away.Frick’s compelling writing made me ache for Ellory, even when I didn’t know why. When looking for her other works, I wasn’t surprised to see she’s also a poet.Readers, don’t read too many reviews before beginning SEE ALL THE STARS. You don’t want any hints to spoil the beauty arc of the storyline. You may guess the source of Ellory’s pain before the story unfolds, but that won’t diminish your enjoyment if you allow your revelations to happen organically.I have several favorite books which I reread at least once a year, sometimes more frequently when I need to rely on an old familiar book friend. SEE ALL THE STARS has made that list and I think Kit Frick for writing such a special novel.

While See All the Stars’ description was vague, and it didn't feel like it was building up to something while I was reading (until closer to the end), each chapter was short and tense, making me want to keep reading. I found the one betrayal near the end to be predictable, but I did NOT see the end twist coming at all and I’m usually very good at seeing that particular thing. I enjoyed Frick's characters and felt for them, was angry at them, or sad with them. They felt real and complex, and the setting was done nicely--I felt the darkness, the cold, the long days of summer as if I were living them. Frick's writing was beautiful, with just enough voice to keep me going.

SEE ALL THE STARS is a wholly unique reading experience. The kind of book where the suspense builds and builds to where you can't help but zoom through the book to get to the answer to the book's biggest questions. At the same time, though, Frick expertly draws the emotional experience of falling in love and losing the pillars of one's lives in one fell swoop. I felt for protagonist Ellory the whole way through, and couldn't help but take the time to slow down and really savor Frick's gorgeous prose. It's the kind of book you need to read several times -- once to get all your questions answered, then a couple more to really appreciate how this story is crafted. Highly recommended

This book is stunning -- there is so much poetry in Kit Frick's prose, so many gorgeous lines. This is a book that manages to be both chilling and lovely, with a nonlinear timeline that keeps you guessing.

It's very hard to review this book without spoiling it. Just know that the author writes a lyrical, gripping, and emotional YA novel about four very different friends, and what it means to say goodbye to those relationships that an be toxic and hold us back. A stunning and strong debut. I look forward to more of Kit Frick's future works.

An elegantly written page-turner. Come for the mysterious event that turned a young woman's life upside down. Stay for the beautiful and eerily accurate depiction of female friendships in high school. Groan/eyeroll (a little) at the melodrama of first love.

I just finished reading _See All the Stars_ and it blew me away. I ordered it because I know the author's husband, so I felt compelled to support this debut novel. But boy, it did not disappoint. Even if you're not normally a YA fan, I strongly recommend this; if you ever were a teenager, maybe especially a teenage girl, but certainly not only if you were, you'll get a lot of it. The pacing was perfect, the suspense was delightfully agonizing, and the resolution was satisfying without being unlikely.I haven't been able to stop thinking about the characters since I finished it. It's a quick read (mostly because you will not want to stop reading it)--I devoured it in about four days and it may have been fewer if I didn't have other responsibilities interrupting my reading schedule.Highly, highly recommend.

Even though the first half of the novel was drawn out and a bit repetitive, the second half and especially the ending more than made up for it. The ending was beautiful and deeply heartfelt. I will most likely read this again because I have a feeling I will get more out of it.
