Benefit:The Kindle version is more portable by far than the printed version. However:After encountering a number of paragraphs that seemed wrong, I began comparing it with my printed version and found a number of typos and mistakes. To give just one example, "...Gothic fleets passed through the undefined Bosphorus...". The correct phrase is "undefended" Bosphorus. This type of mistake is typical of the others. In how many places do you suppose the text is garbled like this?A portable version is worthless if it is not accurate.Update:In the same paragraph Severus is described as having a "just auspicion that...". Suspicion. The word is suspicion. The Kindle version is too corrupt to put any faith in.

The merit of Gibbon's masterpiece needs no defense. Readers are, I assume, looking for remarks about whether this Everyman set is a quality edition. Well, this is it. I looked at the Folio Society edition: lovely, yes; but fragile and grossly overpriced. The Everyman is sturdily bound with solid boards and paper. The typeface is clean. A handy bookmark is bound into each volume. It's nice to hold in the hand. The text is the standard one of 1910, with notes to catch major errors of fact; there are good, more recent introductions (to vols 1 and 4) by the eminent Hugh Trevor-Roper (does that man know everything, or what?). ALL of the original footnotes are here, and readers of Gibbon should consider them as essential. Someone once quipped that Gibbon lived out his sex life in footnotes; there's some truth in that remark.Reading Gibbon is a landmark achievement in a person's life. Spend it with the quality production of this Everyman set.

I will append a single proviso to my five-star rating: to enjoy this book, you will need a somewhat decent command of the English language and the capacity to unpack dense meaning. Gibbon's prose, to my mind, is almost without par; however, it is very much written in the Enlightenment style, which was more complex than what we accustomed to from today's workman-like scribblers. Therefore, if you dislike long, complicated sentences, it's probable that you won't enjoy this work. Also if you're a teenager, I might suggest you perhaps start with someone like Will Durant, who has a nice style of his own, but is much easier for the youngsters to comprehend. Unless you're a whizz kid, then by all means jump on this immediately.Perhaps a representative passage will get my point across:"Of the various forms of government which have prevailed in the world, an hereditary monarchy presents the fairest scope for ridicule. Is it possible to relate without an indignant smile, that, on the father’s decease, the property of a nation, like that of a drove of oxen, descends to his infant son, as yet unknown to mankind and to himself, and that the bravest warriors and the wisest statesmen, relinquishing their natural right to empire, approach the royal cradle with bended knees and protestations of inviolable fidelity? Satire and declamation may paint these obvious topics in the most dazzling colours, but our more serious thoughts will respect a useful prejudice, that establishes a rule of succession, independent of the passions of mankind; and we shall cheerfully acquiesce in any expedient which deprives the multitude of the dangerous, and indeed the ideal, power of giving themselves a master. In the cool shade of retirement, we may easily devise imaginary forms of government, in which the sceptre shall be constantly bestowed on the most worthy by the free and incorrupt suffrage of the whole community. Experience overturns these airy fabrics, and teaches us that in a large society the election of a monarch can never devolve to the wisest or to the most numerous part of the people. The army is the only order of men sufficiently united to concur in the same sentiments, and powerful enough to impose them on the rest of their fellow-citizens; but the temper of soldiers, habituated at once to violence and to slavery, renders them very unfit guardians of a legal or even a civil constitution. Justice, humanity, or political wisdom, are qualities they are too little acquainted with in themselves to appreciate them in others. Valour will acquire their esteem, and liberality will purchase their suffrage; but the first of these merits is often lodged in the most savage breasts; the latter can only exert itself at the expense of the public; and both may be turned against the possessor of the throne by the ambition of a rival. The superior prerogative of birth, when it has obtained the sanction of time and popular opinion, is the plainest and least invidious of all distinctions among mankind. The acknowledged right extinguishes the hopes of faction, and the conscious security disarms the cruelty of the monarch."If you were able to read those three paragraphs without much trouble, and understood exactly what he was saying, then you should be to digest this work. Pay attention to the style, too. Do you like those long sentences, the vivid imagery of the wordplay? Some people do not. If you are one of those people, you will not make it through this work (it is almost 4,000 pages). Some people call it florid. I don't agree. I love Gibbon's style, and was disappointed after finishing the sixth volume that I had no more to read. Not to worry, though, as it holds up exceedingly well to repeat reading (usually I just return to read a chapter here, or there, on whatever topic I am interested in at the moment). Also pay attention to not just the style of the above three paragraphs, but the viewpoint Gibbon was expressing. Keep in mind, Gibbon wrote in the 1700s. His viewpoint is hardly postmodern, and he is a particularly stern judge in almost all respects: of history, of character, of society. That said, his book remains remarkably (but not entirely) free of racial bigotry. You only need to look up some of Immanuel Kant's quotes to realise that how exceptional this is for the period when Gibbon wrote. Be assured, however, that you may not agree with many of Gibbon's opinions. If you can't suspend your judgement when you read, if you only like to read authors whose you sociopolitical views you share, then you may not be able to stick this one out. My suggestion would be to try, however. On to the actual material Gibbon covers. If you're looking for any material on Rome under the Kings, Republican Rome, or the early Empire, then you've come to the wrong place. Gibbon does provide us with a brief, single-chapter account of the Empire and its Emperors from Augustus to Domitian, and two opening chapters on the age of the Antonines (which Gibbon and most scholars consider to have been the peak of the Empire in almost every respect). The real narrative, however, picks up with the death of Marcus Aurelius and the accession to sole rule of his son, Commodus, in 180AD. If you don't know much Roman history, and these names are still familiar to you, perhaps you've seen Gladiator? Marcus Aurelius is the old Emperor whom Russell Crowe serves at the beginning. Commodus is the Joaquin Phoenix character. That film wasn't really based on any true story, but these definitely were father and son in real life, and incidentally Commodus really did things like fight as a gladiator. Some of the stories Gibbon tells are quite amusing. We hear that Commodus had special arrows made, whose tips were shaped like crescent moons. He could, apparently, decapitate a sprinting ostrich by firing one of these from his bow. Commodus thought nothing of killing a lion in single combat. An elephant too. All in the arena, as his subjects watched. Some stories about other Emperors are clearly far-fetched:we are told the Emperor Maximin (known to us as Maximinus Thrax) was over 8 feet tall, could drink 7 gallons of wine and eat between 30-40 pounds of meat in a day, could break a horse's leg with a punch, and crumble stones in his fists. However, Gibbon is a sober historian. He never falls for a tall tale. If he tells one, it is for amusement or colour. He always provides his sources, and he is an astute judge of a source's quality. Gibbon always, if possible, practices what he calls "ascending to the font," by which he means never settling for a secondary source if a primary source is available. All these traits made him remarkable as a historian for his period.Volume I takes the reader until the triumph of Constantine the Great over his rivals in the early 4th Century AD. It then concludes with the first of what were considered the most controversial chapters of the book. Volume II begins with the second. These "controversial" chapters (15 & 16) dealt with the origin of Christianity, and its character and evolution in the roughly three centuries until Constantine founded Constantinople as a new, Christian Rome (Constantine actually called it Nova Roma, but the people were having none of that). Now chapters 15 & 16 caused quite the stir in Gibbon's day. You can go and read on Wikipedia about the accusations made against Gibbon because of what the chapters contained. Honestly, though, for the twenty-first century, they are extremely tame. It is to Gibbon's credit, however, that throughout the book when he does dedicate chapters entirely to religion, he at least in most cases avoids inflicting terminal boredom on the reader.Volume II takes the reader until the first part of Theodosius the Great's career. Volume III shoots just past the end of the Empire in the West, ending with a chapter on some of the barbarians who came to exercise sovereignty in the former Imperial lands. Volume IV covers Justinian and his immediate successors, still ruling as the Roman Empire in the East, and in the West continues covering the Barbarian successor kingdoms. The scheme of the work changes a little when the reader arrives at Volumes V and VI. Gibbon did not put much stock in the so-called Byzantine empire. In the final chapter of Volume IV he in fact covers 800 years of Byzantine empires, whereas he had just spent four volumes covering about half that amount of time. So if you were hoping for an extremely in-depth coverage of the Byzantine Empire, you'll be sorely disappointed, as I initially was (if this is the case, I suggest you look to the excellent works of John Julius Norwich). Instead, in Volumes V and VI, Gibbon covers the histories of the nations erected on the ruins of the West Roman Empire, along with those territories lost to enemies in the East. This takes the reader through a varied journey: the Caliphates; the Turkish Sultanates; the Crusades and Crusader Kingdoms; the exploits of the Normans in France, Italy, and elsewhere; the Bulgarians; the Hungarians; Russia; the Papacy; the Italian states; and more. All said and done, the complete work took me about 15 months to read. I took my time, reading about half an hour per day. Some days I'd read an hour, some days only ten minutes. I made sure to read it every day, however. Take your time. Get into a habit of reading this, one bite-sized chunk at a time. You'll be glad you did.

this is the second time I have read this amazing history. This time, however, I have read it in tandem with the Cambridge Medieval History and lots of Wikipedia links. The thing that impresses me is how accurate Gibbon was 200 years ago and Bury, even with his updates, 100 years ago. If you want to understand the basis of much of our Constitution (freedom of religion, right to bear arms, right to a speedy trial, etc etc) these are good for thought. Both books also give a longterm perspective that one might otherwise not have regarding governments, and the reasons civilizations collapse, and how we all got to where we are today. Not easy reading, but important for people who really want to know "stuff."

This Beginnings bundle is the perfect introduction to the work of Lindsay Buroker. I stumbled upon her book The Emperor's Edge several years ago and have read everything she's published since then. I've always given her great ratings because she's a superb author whose books bring well-developed characters, innovative plots, lots of action, and more than a touch of humor. Even if you've read the previously published first books in this series, as I have, her new Dragon Rider story is worth the price of the whole bundle by itself. If you haven't read her books, this is a great place to start. I have my personal favorites -- Balanced on the Blade's Edge and Encrypted -- but each book opens its own world of adventure. Do yourself a favor and spring for the bundle, then enjoy the books one by one! You'll be glad you did.

If you haven't read any of Lindsay Buroker's books this collection is a great place too start. Don't let yourself be deterred by the fact that all the books are series starters - non of them have cliffhanger endings. If, like me, you have already read all of them, there is one previously unpublished story set in the past of the "Dragonblood" universe that, to me, made it worth buying this collection.

I enjoy Ms. Buroker's writing. And I thought the gimmick of a collection of Volume Ones was clever. Based on Encrypted, I bought the other two volumes in the series. But then I read The Emperor's Edge ... and was bothered. The set-up is hackneyed -- quirky heroine/brooding-and-deadly mystery man, etc. But the editing annoyed the bejeezus out of me! Maybe this was written before she could employ a decent copy editor, but surely it could have gotten another going-over before being published in a teaser collection! No, it's not "take another tact." It's "take another tack" (as in sailing). No, it's not "laid on her back," it's "lay on her back."No, it's not "if he was hosting," it's "if he were hosting."And then there's the first page of chapter 16, where an initial drop-capital has somehow crept in. On my Kindle and my phone, the first page of the chapter consists of and opening quotation mark and a huge letter Y. On the kindle app on my PC, the page text is legible, but this is more detective work than I expect for a 99-cent purchase.

I was very excited to hear of this boxed set release. Not only did it have a brand new story set before the events of the other included books, like Encrypted and The Emperor's Edge, but it included new introductions telling where the inspirations for the stories came from. Dragon Rider was a fun and thought-provoking new story full of adventure and humor, and I only wish it could have been longer! After Taylina's village is attacked she sets out to gain the help of a reclusive dragon who lives on the other side of the island. The dragon she ends up working with is such a hilarious character I actually laughed out loud on several occasions, earning strange looks from my husband when I tried to explain about a dragon acting like a dog. All together, this is the perfect set to introduce yourself to Lindsay's epic world where these stories take place. I was able to get my father thoroughly hooked on her work! Thank you Lindsay for always making my day when you have a new release!

I bought this set to read Dragon Rider. It was a good story, quick read, well written, fun and lots of dragon time. I enjoyed the story and will end up reading the rest of the series when it comes out.I went ahead and read Encrypted and ended up loving it, I have it 5 stars! I still need to finish the rest of that series when I find some time.I tried reading The Emperor’s Edge before but couldn't quite get into it.I read ALL the Dragon Blood books, they are amazing! And I had read Warrior Mage before, it was a really good book too.So get this set and get a little bit of this and that and find a new good series to read.

What a great way to spark interest in the works of Lindsay Buroker. Over the past couple of years, I have lost a lot of sleep reading her work. Every book, every series is both a fun and emotional ride. Dragon Rider is a new installment for me...but did I stop there? Noooo...I read Encrypted for the fifth time, then Decrypted it's sequel. Back to the Emperor's Edge series, again for at least the eighth time, maybe ninth. I'm now on the third book in that series. Each time I re-read these books, I find new things to laugh at, innuendo I missed in prior readings. And, like Sci-Fi? Read the Star Nomad series. Want something shorter, take up Rust and Relics (paranormal) or Flash Gold. Wow! All in all, she is stand alone, my favorite author and no, she didn't pay me to advertise her work. I want the kindle world to give her work a try. I guarantee you'll be as hooked as I am.

This is a delicious sampler of Buroker's series! A brilliant way to introduce you to these most excellent books. You WILL want to pursue your acquaintance with these splendid characters. A young conflicted mage seeking to redeem his family's honor. A young lady who strikes up an acquaintance with dragons in order to save her home country from invading barbarians. A young law-enforcement officer wishing to perform a greater deed for Empire and Emperor. A hot pilot stranded in a frigid climate where he discovers a thousand-year-old lover. A white tower academic involved in her country's war effort who falls in love with the enemy. How could you NOT get this box set?

After finishing the Star Nomad series, I found this collection of five series-beginning novels. Reading these stories reminded me of why I like Lindsay Buroker. I use a Kindle, so I'm not sure if I can call this a page turner, but every time I started a chapter and saw an estimated reading time of around 20 minutes, I was amazed when I started the next chapter after what seemed like only a couple. I couldn't put this book down, and will definitely be following up on these series.

Review

"This satirical take on a dog's easy, breezy existence makes for a fun-filled book that will make dog lovers smile from ear to ear." -TrendHunter"You rolled your eyes every week that silly I Could Pee on This: And Other Poems by Cats book turned up on the best-seller lists yet again. 'Crazy cat people,' you said, with a barely audible touch of smugness. 'Francesco Marciuliano just doesn't have enough to do writing comic strip Sally Forth.' Well, now the Velcro bootie is on the other paw, isn't it? I Could Chew On This: And Other Poems By Dogs, by the same author, is out and you're just going to go belly up and do tricks for it, aren't you? This, after all, is real poetry."-The Denver Post

These are cute gifts, perfect for small hostess gifts for dog loving friends. My favorite:The NamingGive me something strongGive me something powerfulGive me something nobleGive me something memorableGive me somethingTo carry through all my yearsWith back straight and chin held highBut then you ask your three-year-old daughter"Why don't you name the new puppy?"And I'm so screwed that I could cryAs the former owner of a male Newfoundland named "Fluffy" I couldn't help but laugh.

I found the book to have a slow start but half way through, I was laughing out loud and shaking my head "yes", in relating some of the antics in the book to experiences that I have had with my beloved dogs, present and past. The book is light reading, the accompanying photos are very much a plus. Although this book has lots of laughs, it also gives insight and food for thought. The poem "Just a Head's Up" is a perfect example. It goes: " Every time man forces one dog to fight another dog God moves one step closer to handing the world over to the roaches." That one really hit home, living in North Florida where dog fighting is, indeed, "illegal" but somehow seems to slip by anyway. It's a shame that those responsible, probably, will not be reading this book. Well, maybe, someday the reaches will learn to read.....

There were a couple of clever poems, but most were just bland and blah. I originally intended to buy a different dog poem book. Then, I saw a few critical on that book. They suggested this book was better, funnier, etc. However, their criticism seemed to center on what they considered 'crude language', so in retrospect I should not have listened. SO, I went back and ordered the 'other' book and I can wait to read the rude and crude poems, because I found this book to be boring and lame.

The content of this book is delightful. I found the insights of dogs' view of the world funny and right on.I purchased the ebook edition of this book, and that is why I am docking it two stars. The first thing you notice when you open the book is that your screen if forced into portrait mode. Then you are looking at two page spreads with very small print. Unlike every other Kindle book I've purchased, you cannot change the font. Although reading the locked-in font is a bit of a strain, I have persevered because I like the book. Unfortunately, the Kindle reading app for Android has the screen brightness control in the same menu as the font selection, so when my screen dimmed I was forced to load another book to reset the brightness.I don't know if it would make any difference if I was using a Kindle rather than the Android reading app, but this is the first Kindle book out of literally hundreds with which I have experienced this issue.

I love a good dog book and by good I mean one that doesn't make me cry. This fit the bill perfectly. My favorite poems were definitely the ones involving separation anxiety and not getting doggy dinner served on time. I can so relate.Anyway, this cute little book would make a great gift for both dog lovers and friends and family who think us dog owners have gone off the deep end (really surprise them and get your dog to autograph it for them). It offers great insight into the canine mind and some adorable doggy pics too. Now I'm hooked on dog poetry! I think I'll read "Throw The Damn Ball" next. I can always use a good laugh.

Hysterically written. Definitely get one for yourself and dog lover friends. So often these types of books fall way short, this one is thoroughly entertaining throughout. You will see your furry friend and yourself in many, many pages. If you aren't laughing at yourself and your current dog, you will be remembering a past doggie's quirk(s). I originally bought the "I Could Pee on This" - poetry by cats - for my Sis, and loved that humor, leading to this purchase. So glad I did.

This was the PERFECT gift for me dog loving sister. I looked through it before wrapping it for her and found myself laughing and smiling throughout thinking of my pups. I love that it was written from the dogs perspective and is the perfect gift for someone who has that loving relationship with their dog. I will buy this for the rest of my dog loving friends when the time comes.

THis book is hilarious! I got it for my husband from my son as a Christmas present. They saw it at someone’s house last year and laughed and laughed for nearly an hour! Great dog humor, great pictures and adorable poems. Would be perfect for any dog lover as a coffee table book.
