#95,289 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)

This hefty tome weighing in at more than 850 pages is aimed squarely at the SharePoint power user. It is not an administrators aid and will not give you best practices or show you how to install and setup the system. It basically assumes that you already have a working SharePoint 2013 environment. It's really an end users manual, so if you think the "Inside Out" title would include everything you need to know about SharePoint 2013, you need to look elsewhere (actually multiple books as an all inclusive book would really be impracticable). So in saying that, if you are an end user/power user how good is this book and what all does it cover? The book is split into 22 chapters covering everything from basics of SharePoint structure and terms to setting up BDC connections, excel services and more. Depending on your IT department and your level of access in SharePoint, this book covers virtually everything you will need to know to create useful and powerful SharePoint sites. It's a fairly easy read for a technical book and you can use it as a reference to look back on certain subjects if you need reminding. There seems to be a mash of some chapters covering topics already covered in other chapters whilst in other places it refers you to a certain chapter for further information (this is probably just due to the book being written by multiple authors).Although the title of the book is inside out, it keeps things to a fairly high level and doesn't really delve that deeply into each subject, but there is more than enough information for an end user to get them up and running. If you have used a previous version of SharePoint (e.g. SharePoint 2010) then a lot of the information contained in this book you will already know and as such I'm not too sure how much value this book will be. The book does contain information that only SharePoint 2013 has (e.g. FAST search now being built directly into the product) and it does point out the differences between SharePoint Foundation and the full SharePoint Server so would be useful to either.I do wish that some chapters went into more detail than it does but if you are an end user/power user being tasked to create a departmental SharePoint site, document store etc. then this book should give you enough information to get your job done quickly and easily.Overall a good overview of SharePoint 2013 and its capabilities and enough to get users up and running with their SharePoint 2013 sites.Edit: I've upped my rating to 4 star considering this is actually a good book for its target audience.

The introduction starts with mentioning seven areas that the book will cover (page XIX), including three of my main interests: document and web content management, enterprise search and workflows that I will review here."Document collaboration has always been at the heart of what SharePoint provides" (page 12): Chapter 11, Managing Documents is 36 pages long and the term Enterprise Content Management (ECM) is not mentioned at all. Quick Parts is mentioned once but that is in Chapter 22, and with no information at all about all the issues you run into using Quick Parts for promotion/demotion of document properties. (Yes, I promise you that you will get a lot of issues in a serious application using Quick Parts.) There is no discussion of SharePoint document ID system and its limitations. (To be fair, neither has any other book that I have read.) In summary, the book has little information about how to set up SharePoint as a formal first class document management system; this is unfortunate since there are many surprises and issues to consider when using SharePoint as an Enterprise Content Management system. The search part of the book, Chapters 18 and 19 are well written but it is not an introduction how to use search from an users point of view. For that you have to read "SharePoint 2013 for Dummies". It is mentioned that SharePoint 2013 supports search on PDF documents; only one other SharePoint 2013 book I have read gives that little vital piece of information. Neither in this book nor in any other book I have read is mentioned why the search results don't show the title of Word documents (you will have to search on Internet about how to fix this issue). Isn't the title of the document (and author and the unique document ID) the basic information you would like to see when doing a document search in an Enterprise Content Management system? The book has a fair description of SharePoint Designer. It is mentioned twice that workflows can be connected to Content Types; however without the clarification that only SharePoint 2010 workflows can be connected to a Content Type, not the new SharePoint 2013 workflows, which you are supposed to use now. Further, in depth discussions are missing of approve workflow requirements and where SharePoint fails to support a correct formal approve process. (To be fair, neither has any other book that I have read.)The information about user groups and permission levels is weak, although the book has a solution of a tiny issue that I have been looking for a while that no other book I have read mentions. However, neither in this book or any other book I have read is mentioned the issue that you can't rename a document when you use Contribute - without delete permission levels, the permission level to be used in a regulated ECM system. The book has comparatively few practical examples how to solve things in its 871 numbered pages. If you are buying just one book to become a SharePoint super/power user, I recommend instead Beginning SharePoint 2013 - Building Business Solutions. But this book is still worth to have and read as the second power user book.Edit: You must have read at least "SharePoint 2013 for Dummies" before reading this book, otherwise you will be confused. I previously wrote that the XPS format is not supported but XPS is now supported since some cumulative update, unclear which one.

The information in the book seems OK. Sometimes if find the information a little light. There are some items that doesn't include enough information and because of that is a little misleading at times. I think this book is helpful for people that are comfortable with prior versions of SharePoint but because of the incomplete information I feel it has the potential to confuse beginners.

This is a comprehensive book about Sharepoint 2013 although I think some of the comments and material actually apply to a previous version. This is somewhat of an issue because there have been some important changes to Sharepoint between 2013 and previous versions.

Great content for intermediate and advanced users. There's a lot of information packed in here! Unfortunately, the graphics were awful - images are tiny, nearly impossible to decipher, as was the text. Big thumbs down to Microsoft Press for the crappy print.

As promised

Very comprehensive guidance for planning your SharePoint implementation. This book proposes lots of very pertinent questions that you really need answered to ensure that issues get dealt with in the planning phase when it is easier and cheaper to address and not in the post-implementation phase.

This is a really good book for through coverage of SharePoint 2013 from the perspective of everyday user. Great place to start your research and understanding into current version of SharePoint.

great price, book exactly as described, would order from seller again

I've been waiting on this one to come out and I wasn't disappointed! In this wonderful book the author encourages the reader to declutter and organize your home leaving only those things you truly need and love. But the book is not just about getting rid of stuff....it's about having a more relaxed and fulfilling life as a result of it. She writes about a morning routine, the domino effect, creating order and enjoying luxury aka having empty drawers and more cabinet space. If you have "stuff" everywhere and feel totally overwhelmed by it, then this is the book for you!

As always Melissa Michaels tells you how to find peace and joy in your homeBy getting rid of clutter you can truly obtain that in your home.I love reading her booksIt's now a how toIt's a girl friend telling you what you need to hear when you need to hear itDefinite must reach

My first thought is that Melissa writes in a way that I feel she is talking directly to me! I have her book Love The Home You Have and it helped me improve the look and feel of my home so much. I even got comments on how much better it looks! This new book has charged me up to a whole new level. I am so bad about holding on to things that I really don't need. Examples-I remember who gave this to me, I remember how much this cost, I might need this some day. For some reason reading this book has unleashed a purging binge for me. Through Melissa's writing I feel it's finally time and OK to just let stuff go. I've tried other methods before, but this is the one that is really working for me!

I have all of Melissa Michaels. This is a good book on its own but it repeats what was said in some of her previous books. She has some good organizing ideas which I already know. But, that doesn't mean I have used them & it's good to be reminded of what can be done. As time goes by organizing needs change. It's nice to have a refresher. For the reviews that say she is just a repeat of the fly lady, this is not true. She adds warmth & heart to her books. She is very gifted. and, I love the coloring book!

Great book! What makes this book different from other organizing books I've read is the focus on changing your thought process and mindset toward 'stuff' altogether. Not just a how-to-clean-out-your-stuff plan, but also how keep it that way. It gets at the source of the matter, which is the keep to sustaining any change! I love love love it and catch myself having 'Melissa' thoughts when deciding whether to get rid of something or purchase something.

This is more than just an organizational book. It's like a best friend helping you to sort and declutter and laugh with you over then stuff...er...junk you've kept over the years as well as cry at letting go of something beautiful that just doesn't work any more! Doing all of that with grace and gentleness so that you don't feel defeated by the process....that's what Melissa Michaels does in this book! Thank you West Coast friend! From your Southside Virginia friend ;)

When starting a clean up/declutter in my house, I always like to read a corresponding book. It helps reinforce what I am doing. There really was nothing new in this book. But like I said, it did reinforce what I was accomplishing. The last couple of chapters get all spiritual and I skipped them. But overall, mission accomplished.

I think I've read every book out there re: de-cluttering and organizing. Getting rid of excess STUFF.This book is one of the best. Melissa writes in a way that doesn't stress you out but gives you concreteplans of action in a loving, calm way. This book helped me start the process of simplifying my life, andit all starts with your home. You can't have a clear head/mind for anything else until you start at home.It also prompted me to find a local de-clutter expert, who has become a good trusted friend now. The peoplethat do this kind of work are indeed life-changing angels and Melissa is a great start to your new life!

Max Hastings delivers a great overview of the Vietnam War, and much better than Ken Burns did in his documentary and its companion book in my opinion. I enjoyed the Burns book, but I felt like many South Vietnamese felt that it was a lacking in detailing the atrocities of the Communists. I'll admit my biases now however. My own Grandfather was an ARVN grunt who got put in a gulag for years after the war. Ken Burns deserves credit for bringing the Vietnam War back to the forefront, but more details of the beasts that the US and South Vietnam were fighting would have given a more nuanced look to the viewership. The Communists buried people alive who resisted them to save bullets. They hacked people to death. Summary executions of "enemies of the revolution" were done in order to create a Stalinist society. Westerners sometimes of a romantic view of the Davidian "freedom fighters" throwing off the Goliaths of the west, and label Ho Chi Minh as a Nationalist rather than a Communist. But the North Vietnamese policies were Stalinist policies, and no one but the most ardent Communists today would call Stalin anything other than a ruthless butcher. Hastings did well in discussing Ho's commitment to the Comintern even before WWII, and his purges of the Vietnamese peoples of the various nationalist groups who also fought the French. There were dozens of Nationalists striving for an independent Vietnam. The Viet Minh butchered them all. Americans who remember Afghanistan in the 80s will remember that we did not aid the Taliban, but rather a fractured network of Mudjahideen fighting against Soviet troops. However, the Taliban won the scramble for power in the post-war period and destroyed all other opposition groups. The Viet Minh had done the same thing 30 years earlier.I believe Hastings put it best when he said something along the lines of "Those who feel like America was wrong had a tendency to take the extra step, and assume that their enemies were right" and that South Vietnam and North Vietnam embarked a bloody conflict that neither "deserved" to win.Hastings frames it as a tragedy, so the language and prose he uses stir the heart and the stories he collected are truly heartbreaking. As a journalist, he knows how to write in a manner that a more perhaps "dry" history does not fully capture. Since he is a Brit, I felt that Hastings approached this story with less bias that Vietnamese or American historians tend to. American historians understandably tend to frame it as an American history. Hastings takes a more Vietnamese-centric angle with this work. We also see perspectives from the British officials throughout the work. I simply could not put this book down, because it is so well written.Overall, I greatly enjoyed this book, and recommend it to anyone who liked Ken Burns' documentary and would like to flesh out their understanding of the conflict.

If you want to read only one history of the Vietnam War, choose this book, “Vietnam, an Epic Tragedy, 1945-1975”, by Max Hastings. Does that mean I agree with all of the author’s conclusions—no. It means that Max Hastings has succeeded better than any other author I have read in capturing, and then presenting in an understandable way what actually happened in that long bloody conflict.Hastings faces head on the lingering questions about the war, gives the reader the facts as he found them and then his conclusions based on those facts. He finds few generals worthy of the name on either side. On the other hand he also recites in detail the actions of these generals that led to those conclusions. You can chose a differing opinion if you want. The Vietnam War for Hastings was a 30 year tragedy, interspersed with courage, stupidity alternating with brilliance, and some humor as well. Thirty years is a lot to cover even in 752 pages. The beauty of the book is that Hastings succeeds in telling the larger story of the war along with many of the smaller ones as well. Like Cornelius Ryan, in his books, “The Longest Day” and a “Bridge Too Far”, Hastings is a former newspaper reporter, actually a war reporter that reported on the Vietnam War. What that means for the reader is mostly short well thought out sentences that tell an understandable story about a complex subject.
The fact that the war itself changed every year and that a soldier’s experience depended a great deal on the unit he was with and the Area of Operations that the unit was responsible for is well told, well explained. Even more important Hastings finally gets the battles of Tet ’68 right. It was a massive victory completely misreported at home.
You can read my book, “Steel Rain, the Tet Offensive 1968” to find out what being an elite paratrooper was like in the late 1960's, when the country had a draft and well over five hundred thousand Americans were serving one year tours in Vietnam, or Frank Boccia’s book “Crouching Beast” to learn what happened at the battle of Hamburger Hill, but if you want to know what happened during the entire Vietnam War including more than a bit about the French debacle and lead in to America’s involvement, then read “Vietnam, an Epic Tragedy, 1945-1975”, by Max Hastings.
I should disclose that I was one of those interviewed by the author and I am quoted a couple of times in the book but that was the only time I ever met him.

I have read and reviewed many books on Vietnam, but it is hard to believe this one will be surpassed in the foreseeable future. It is comprehensive, balanced and fair. The title says it all. There were no good guys in Vietnam--on one hand, Diem, the Thieu family, Madame Nhu...what a cast of losers and corrupt, self-seeking jerks. And these were our allies, so-called. On the other side a bunch of Stalinists willing to destroy much of their country to impose a dictatorship which guarantees poverty and degradation. One comes away feeling that the Vietnamese--all of them, north and south, communist and anti-communist--got what they deserved. Quite a bit of attention is given to the clowns in Washington of both Democrat and Republican administrations who quite obviously didn't know what they were doing and wouldn't admit they'd made a wrong decision, at the cost of over 50,000 American lives. The Vietnamese deserved what they got; the American soldiers and Marines didn't.
