Amazon.com Review

Piloting his 747, Rayford Steele is musing about his wife Irene's irritating religiosity and contemplating the charms of his "drop-dead gorgeous" flight attendant, Hattie. First Irene was into Amway, then Tupperware, and now it's the Rapture of the Saints--the scary last story in the Bible in which Christians are swept to heaven and unbelievers are left behind to endure the Antichrist's Tribulation. Steele believes he'll put the plane on autopilot and go visit Hattie. But Hattie's in a panic: some of the passengers have disappeared! The Rapture has happened, abruptly driverless cars are crashing all over, and the slick, sinister Romanian Nicolae Carpathia plans to use the UN to establish one world government and religion. Resembling "a young Robert Redford" and silver-tongued in nine languages, Carpathia is named People's "Sexiest Man Alive." (This reviewer, a former People writer, finds this plot twist plausible.) Meanwhile, Steele teams up with Buck Williams, a buck-the-system newshound, to form the Tribulation Force, an underground of left-behind penitents battling the Antichrist. Ex-presidential candidate Pat Robertson briefly outsold Michael Crichton with his apocalypse novel The End of the Age (now available on audiocassette), and the similar The Third Millennium sells well, but the Left Behind series is the absolute champion in the race to make the Book of Revelation into racy thriller reading. --Tim Appelo

From Library Journal

On a flight from Chicago to London, several passengers aboard Capt. Rayford Steele's plane suddenly and mysteriously disappear. When Steele radios to London to report the situation, he discovers that the incident on his plane is not an isolated phenomenon but a worldwide occurrence. As Steele begins his search for answers, he learns that the Christ has come to take the faithful with Him in preparation for the coming apocalyptic battle between good and evil and that those who have been left behind must face seven dark and chaotic years in which they must decide to join the forces of Christ or the forces of Anti-Christ. Jenkins, writer-in-residence at Moody Press, and LaHaye (A Nation Without a Conscience, Tyndale, 1994) have written a gripping thriller that captures the anxiety and fear that interpretations of Revelation often inspire. I started reading these books starting with Left Behind in the shooting of 2001, and was saved by chapter 3. When I dropped to my knees and asked the Lord what must I do to be saved. I had not even heard of the word rapture ( in this sense) none less know what it meant. Thanks to this book I am saved. I am now reading them again for a refresher, one to get back to my first love the way it was when He first saved me, and because I just really enjoyed the books and want to read again, I had truly forgotten so much it is like reading for the 1st time. What a blessing. The only part that I don't like this time around is the inclination that the pope was raptured. The 1st time I read it I had no clue on, or about religions, this time I do and I don't want people having such a false hope as this. I know billions will disagree with me I this but you just can't sugar coat God's true word not to offend. I have to ask the question, do I offend and maybe help even one person from going to hell or do offend God, by leaving out his truths to appease the masses. I choose to offend the masses. Such a loving series of books. That I will be forever grateful for.

This kindle book is called "The Left Behind Collection", but it isn't a collection of 12 separate e-books. It is one very long book file that includes all 12 titles of the series from Left Behind through Glorious Appearing. (It does not include Kingdom Come, which is considered a "sequel".)To be clear, if you buy this you are getting one huge book file that contains all 12 titles, not 12 individual book files. So, it may seem rather odd that the Kindle progress bar will say something like 18% after you finish the whole first book. And, you can't chuck the prior books off your Kindle (or loan them out) as you move on, since it is all one file. Each title and every chapter in each title are marked and "go to"-able.There aren't any extras like whispersync for voice or xray.It says the title is lendable, but it can't be broken into parts, so whoever you lend it to will have to read all 12 books in 14 days.Still, if you've never read the books, or just want to read them again, this is an excellent value.

I have seen the three movies that are based on this book series. Left Behind, Left Behind: Tribulation Force, and Left Behind: World at War. The movies are great, but the books treat everything with a lot more detail and I am intending to read all 13 of the books. I just finished the second one and have ordered the third. It has been a long time since I have been so interested in the story that I almost can't put the books down. The writer's style is constantly compelling.

A vibrant view of what is coming to us all ... it's hard knowing the agony of the tribulation not to be afraid, but those who seek will find their faith. And those who find their faith, will find the glory of God and the heart of Christ. Thank you for this portrayal of the Book of Revelations. It's quite vivid and realistic, and so I pray we each find the truth of the gospel and refuge in our Lord and Saviour, our Redeemer Jesus the Christ.

Very well done. I tried not to read these books when my husband told me I really had to that they were so good and would explain the End Times of the Bible. But I thought I had the Bible itself. I didn't need these books. Well yes, I did. Even though I had read Revelations and the whole Bible and was rereading and studying, this book was a blessing, and I intend to read them all. Christians need to know where we came from, how Jesus came to earth and how he will return. Our job is to encourage one another in our walk with the Lord and to lead others to the truth. These books help us grow in the knowledge of what is coming. Great book.

I firmly believe the "Left Behind" series is a great work of fiction; great fan fiction, that is. It's actually second-generation fan fiction, if one considers "Revelation," a late addition to the Bible, first-generation fan fiction.I might have given the series five stars if there weren't any grammatical or factual errors. And I might have given it five stars if I was Christian, but I think when an atheist like me stands up and shouts to the world about how good these books are, four stars is a reasonable rating. The individual sub-plots move along at a nice pace, similar to John Grisham's and Tom Clancy's writing. And there are plenty of cliff-hangers. One of the great things about this collection is that one need not slow down for a moment to continue to the next book; a few extra swipes and the story keeps moving along. While I found some of the biblical passages repetitious and tedious (after all, I'm atheist), I also found LaHaye's explanations of how Old and New Testament passages can be tied together to explain "Revelation" regardless of how much editing the Bible had over the centuries.

This was an amazing series! So many times I've wondered what the end times would be like and although I've read Revelations and other prophecies from the Bible, to have it narrated in such a way as to make me feel like I was living it as I read... incredible. I have to say, the Glorious Appearing (last book) was truly anointed by God. Just reading it and imagining that Jesus was speaking directly to me as he was to the characters in the book...you can put yourself there in your mind and experience what the characters heard/saw. There will always be skeptics and people who will read this and believe it's just a fictional story, but I have no doubt these scenarios will come to pass. I pray that people who read these novels are convicted in their hearts and spirits and will come closer to the Lord because of it. Either way, the stories were riveting. There were times when I sort of skimmed a couple of paragraphs because they were a little too wordy for me, but overall, AWESOME! Plus, realize these books were written in the late 90s/early 2000s - any of the scenarios look/sound familiar like they're happening today...? Food for thought.

Really enjoying the read. I am impressed at how the author has woven 'real' life into a biblical teaching. Easy to follow along the paths of the characters and the biblical references also.

If you're not a USC or Seahawks fan, I think it's very easy to see Pete Carroll as an antagonist. But as someone with little skin the game of college or pro football, I was intrigued by the success that he has enjoyed given the freedom that he allows his players to have. I probably view this dynamic quite simplistically, but this juxtaposition does seem counterintuitive to traditional coaching. I bought Win Forever to understand what Carroll is about... and I was pleasantly surprised to read about the thoughtfulness of his philosophy towards his players. To hear him name-drop Abraham Maslow was kind of cool, and to understand how deliberately he creates a learning environment is very interesting and unique. I think many people would be surprised to read how Carroll's philosophy developed and how successful he's been. Note that it seems that he wrote this the year after he transitioned to the Seahawks, so there's no Super Bowl insights or recap although there is mention of Marshawn Lynch's "Beast Mode" run.A couple of negative aspects to this book: Number one, a cynic might see that this book was co-written and wonder how much of the philosophical nuggets are "introduced" into the story. As a certified cynic, this thought occurred to me a few times but I decided that I enjoy the story and the philosophy so much that I "buy in" (so to speak) to the story in its entirety. I also found it off-putting how many football people he mentions in the book - you may find yourself checking Wikipedia to find out who "Rocky Seto" is, only to find that there may not be a value to knowing that outside of the context of one or two sentences in this book. It's a very minor criticism, though. All in all, I really enjoyed this book and I would recommend it to anyone who enjoys reading about leadership, team-building, or of course football.

"The process of self-discovery that was necessary to formulate my vision, and the power of having a philosophy has given me a confidence I didn't have before. One of the keys to success lies in knowing and believing in yourself. When you are confident and you trust in who you are, you can perform to the best of your ability, and that is exactly what I plan to do. Whether you are coaching the USC Trojans or the Seattle Seahawks, working at your job or running a household, all you should ever strive for is to be the best you can be . . . and that is the essence of what it means to Win Forever." ~ Pete Carroll from Win ForeverPete Carroll. Super Bowl-winning coach of the Seattle Seahawks. Super inspiring guy.Pete wrote this book after an incredibly successful decade coaching the USC Trojans and right before he started coaching the Seahawks--a team that had won 9 games in the 2 seasons before he showed up. He basically called his shot--quickly turning the team around and winning a Super Bowl after a few seasons. That's remarkable. This book captures the essence of his philosophy: To Win Forever by Always Competing. It's an inspiring semi-autobiographical look at his journey in life and in football to craft the philosophy that now guides his success on and off the field. If you're into sports, you'll definitely love it. Even if you're not, it's a great read packed with goodness.I'm excited to share a handful of my favorite Big Ideas:1. Coach Maslow - On the football field.2. A Winning Philosophy - What's yours?3. Oops. Fired Again. - But only 5 times.4. Win Forever. - The philosophy arrives.5. Practice Is Everything - Period. To find 250+ more reviews visit http://bit.ly/BrianReviews

While Pete Carroll might get mixed reviews due to the Reggie Bush scandal, he was the man responsible for the glory days of the early 2000's at USC. NCAA screwed him and the team because they were college football darlings for players and fans. Carroll's energy and positiveness is genuine which is so rare today in any form of team or company leader. A light read and just reinforces the positive perception of Carroll that exists.

I bought this book because it sounded like it would be inspirational for my son. I began reading it and when I got to page 31, I knew that I was going to keep the copy and order another to share. You can read page by page, or pick a chapter that sounds interesting. It is as enthusiastically written as watching Pete Carroll on the sidelines of any football game where he is coaching.I am not a fan of Univ. of So. CA….. but rather a fan of a rival…. UCLA…… That does not matter….. The man is a winner…. And he certainly is a motivator. And he has proved all the folks who said he could not coach in his manner in the NFL…. WRONG! It is a real joy to read. Hats off to a good piece of work.

The current success of the Seattle Seahawks will no doubt mean that this book will be widely read and it should be. It is interesting to learn Coach Carroll's philosophy and then to watch how he appears to apply his philosophy in his daily routine with his organization. Many members of the print and electronic media would do well to read this so that they won't ask so many of the same questions over and over, allowing them to get on to more interesting things. Sure, each reporter is trying to get his or her own personal quote from the Coach, but when six reporters at one news conference ask essentially the same question (which the Coach patiently answers the same way each time) their lack of background study is too obvious! The book reads like a talk, so it may be that it was dictated.

This is an excellent book. I find it very motivating and appreciate Coach Carroll's philosophy. There isn't much on the Seahawks days in this but I assume there will be another updated version. There is a good amount of information in this book but it isn't drawn out which I like. This is a great book to read regardless if you are a USC or Seahawks fan or even if you are not a football fan it's worth the read. His philosophy can apply to any business or aspect of life.

From School Library Journal

Gr 5-8–Beginning with a two-page time line spanning prehistory to 2009, this chronological survey of astronomy covers early observations and discoveries, concentrating on modern findings. Beautiful color photographs of space engage readers from the first page. Drawings and diagrams expand upon theories, and illustrations of Galileo, Newton, and William and Caroline Herschel put faces on these prominent scientists. Activities relevant to each chapter, are sprinkled throughout the book, such as making an astrolabe from string; creating a three-dimensional starscape to demonstrate the distances between the stars in a constellation; inflating a balloon covered with stickers representing stars to measure the changing distances in an expanding universe, and more. The three-page glossary provides short definitions of terms (e.g., “eclipse,” “dark matter,” etc.), and many of these terms are listed in the five-page index and take readers to specifics. For example, the observations and photographs of the 1919 total eclipse of the sun revealed the bending of light around the dark sun, thus validating Einstein's theory of relativity. The resources section lists astronomy websites, sky watching and star-chart sites, and books for further reading. This inviting and informative comprehensive survey will be useful for homework assignments and may send young scientists to further studies of astronomy.–Frances E. From Booklist

*Starred Review* With a vast subject and a lengthy time line, this book takes readers on a fast-paced but worthwhile tour of the history of astronomy, beginning with ancient stargazers and ending with the James Webb space telescope, scheduled for launch in 2018. Rather than skimming through centuries of discoveries, the discussion slows at times to consider certain pivotal ones in some detail. At these points, Carson shows unusual finesse in communicating the methods and significance of scientific breakthroughs. Whether describing how Galileo’s observations of Venus through a telescope proved the heliocentric model of the solar system or how Eddington’s photos of a star during a solar eclipse substantiated Einstein’s theory of relativity, the explanations are remarkably clear, vivid, and concise. The discussion gives full weight to women in the field, including Caroline Herschel, Annie Jump Cannon, and Jocelyn Bell Burnell. The many illustrations (most in color) include portraits and photos of astronomers and their equipment as well as images of stars and other space objects. Line drawings illustrate the 21 activities, which offer students opportunities to explore concepts in concrete ways. Notable for its unusually cogent explanations of complex topics, this volume is a worthy companion to Carson’s excellent Exploring the Solar System (2006). Grades 5-8. --Carolyn Phelan

The reader will likely encounter some level of difficulty with the text, but not enough to get frustrated. This is the best way to grow as a reader - with text that's not too hard but not too easy.',

My nephew loves this book! He carries it with him everywhere. I wish that it was available as a hardcover as it's all torn up now, although it doesn't keep him from looking and reading it. Highly recommend.

easy to follow, learn a lot, interesting.

My 12 year old Grandson is into the universe, black holes, etc. this book fits his interest nicely. Arrived on time and in good condition.

Very well done

My grandson enjoyed this birthday gift. Great photos and simple, yet fact-filled explanations.

Wonderful and easy to do activities for space studies. Homeschoolers will love it, but I use it in my classroom too.

nice

The author, Mary Kay Carson, has a number of successful books in her "For Kids" series. One very engaging volume is The Wright Brothers for Kids: How They Invented the Airplane, 21 Activities Exploring the Science and History of Flight (For Kids series). Another, which has some content in common with this new volume, is Exploring the Solar System: A History with 22 Activities (For Kids series). Both of those books are described as aimed at 9 year olds, or fourth graders. While the content can be challenging, that seems about right, especially given the subjects, (airplanes, planets), and the types of activities proposed, (build a kite or glider, map out planet orbits)."Beyond the Solar System" seems to me to be on a slightly different plane. We start with prehistoric views of the cosmos, move through the early Greeks, and then bring astronomy all the way up to the present with discussions of dark matter, dark energy, mapping of cosmic background microwave radiation, and the like. This is a huge undertaking, and in the effort to provide both breadth and depth the book vacillates between being overly simplified in some parts and fairly technical elsewhere. (For example, the second activity consists of using paper plates to construct a demonstration of Ptolemy's system of epicycles within deferents, which Ptolemy used to explain why the Earth was the center of the universe. This established the basis for Ptolemy's incorrect explanation for why Mars moves in retrograde. I could be wrong, but that seems a little beyond what most 9 year olds would want to make.) In that same impulse of inclusiveness, there is so much historical background that we are actually more than one-third of the way through the book before we even get to the 1900's.This is fine by me. The writing is generally clear, the sidebars are interesting and well chosen. Biographical sketches of major contributors to the field touch on not only the usual suspects, (Einstein, Hubble, and so on), but also lesser know yet equally fascinating players. Discovery timelines are also interesting, and illustrations of difficult points are generally well done.I guess the point is that this is not your usual Golden Book version of galaxies and black holes. This is a book with substantial and sometimes demanding content. For a kid with some background and demonstrated interest this could be a great choice. For a younger reader for whom you want an interesting introduction to astronomy, this might be daunting or even discouraging. This really doesn't strike me as a one-size-fits-all type of book, and you might just want to be aware of that. Please note that I received a free advance ecopy of this book in exchange for a candid review. Apart from that I have no connection at all to either the author or the publisher of this book.
