A classic, there is nothing more to say about this book. True, there are today better books on Crystals out, as the art has developed over the years and Scott Cunningham has passed a while ago before those books came on the market. But still, it is the only book that doesn't talk of gems in terms of their healing potential, but rather their use for magick.

I love this book . It's one I use weekly . I have his whole collection and this is probably one of my favorite books I own .

I had this book, but it disappeared in a move. I thought I had moved on, until I saw mention of it in a jewelry description by one of my favorite instructors. I knew I needed it back. Ordered it, love it still. I own quite a few books on the metaphysical uses of crystals, yet this is still a "must go to" resource. It is timeless. We lost Scott Cunningham years ago, but his work is still unequaled and essential.

This book give the reader a great reference source to many common crystals, gems and metals. Each stone/metal is given a listing in addition to chapters on Stone energies, cleansing, obtaining stones and much more. The last part of the book gives invaluable tables regarding Intentions, Elemental Rulers, Planetary Rulers and energies.

If you have other books of Cunningham’s work then you do not need this book. It is repetitive of his other books just outlined in a different arrangement. If you do not have his other books then this would be good information for you.

The best layed out book on Gems etc I've ever read. I've got 9 books on the subject...so way more expensive and the way this book was formatted ...especially the quick references at the end was the best I've seen. I was so impressed; this is the book ive been looking for. HIGHLY RECOMMEND

What Kindle Readers Want to Know:There is no Active Table of Contents. You can click through chapters but you must hit the next page button to see the chapter. Other than those two issues, the book is formatted well and easy to read. But I deduct one star for the lack of TOC and the high price. What Readers Want to Know:I have owned this book for over 20 years and have loved it. Scott's personal take on the crystals is timeless, touching and tantalizing. His descriptions and histories make you want to own the beautiful stones and metals within this encyclopedia. Perhaps, there is a resurgence in crystal lore thanks in part to the show Steven Universe whose main cast are personified gems. The main section deals with the stones like quartz, agate, mica and emeralds. These articles give you the basics like element, planet, and zodiac sign etc. followed by Scott's explanation of physical and magical properties. What makes this book so special is it's many chapters on stone history and applications like stone spells and stone tarot. Besides the crystals and minerals, there is a chapter on magical metals like Tin, Gold, Antimony and Cooper. My favorite articles are on the stones Pipestone, Lepidolite, Oliivine, and Kunzite. I have bought many (maybe too many) books on crystal lore and magic and none are better than this one!

I can't say enough about this book. Cunningham has a wonderful simple style of writing and let's you know this is just his way..dont be afraid to add what works for you. Great book. Fast shipping

This was great find. the games are excellent! There is something for everyone in this book. I would reccomend it to any music or drama teacher who needs ideas for class. And I would even recommend this to regular classroom teachers for use. It also came very quickly through mail. Thanks!

Love this

This book would be great for any activities director; I found that many are not quite what I am looking for for children's dance classes, and some are too lengthy to fit into a 45 minute class. But it definitely offers a wide variety of ideas for a range of ages.

I like it I use it for my kids dance class and got some good ideas. I would really like to have CDs with it I would have paid extra to have the suggested music with the book.

I failed to read the reviews about this book before I bought it. I did, however, preview some of the pages and thought the games that I saw were good, so I went ahead and purchased it. After receiving the book and reveiwing its contect I realized it was a waste of my money. The majority of the games have no substance and are rather silly. It seems like the author of this book was given a week to complete this project and just threw a bunch of silly activites together and called them dance games. I was very disappointed and would not recommend buying this book.

This is a very superficial activity book. Not only are the activities in it not very engaging, but most of the descriptions are very poorly worded. This is at best a guide for those dear people who think "dance" is for an elite class of people. You would be better off just teaching P.E. if this is what you consider creative. Better by far is a book called "First Steps in Teaching Creative Dance to Children" by Mary Joyce.Don't waste your money on this!

This book's activities are poorly described as well as being just plain corny. I cannot imagine the children I work with wanting to jump in and do these excersizes. Even in the spirit of pure play, I find these activities boring and silly (and not silly in a good way). If the activities had more depth, I could then use them to open up into a discussion or exploration. However, with the exception of a few, their relevance was insignificant. I cant see how any of these activities would break down walls, establish trust, inspire children to create, or even bring up a subject worth exploring, etc.

I And Thou, by Martin Buber

Amazon.com Review

I and Thou, Martin Buber's classic philosophical work, is among the 20th century's foundational documents of religious ethics. "The close association of the relation to God with the relation to one's fellow-men ... is my most essential concern," Buber explains in the Afterword. Before discussing that relationship, in the book's final chapter, Buber explains at length the range and ramifications of the ways people treat one another, and the ways they bear themselves in the natural world. "One should beware altogether of understanding the conversation with God ... as something that occurs merely apart from or above the everyday," Buber explains. "God's address to man penetrates the events in all our lives and all the events in the world around us, everything biographical and everything historical, and turns it into instruction, into demands for you and me." Throughout I and Thou, Buber argues for an ethic that does not use other people (or books, or trees, or God), and does not consider them objects of one's own personal experience. Instead, Buber writes, we must learn to consider everything around us as "You" speaking to "me," and requiring a response. Buber's dense arguments can be rough going at times, but Walter Kaufmann's definitive 1970 translation contains hundreds of helpful footnotes providing Buber's own explanations of the book's most difficult passages. --Michael Joseph Gross

As an existential, Jewish philosopher, Buber takes the seriousness of the ‘eternal Thou.’ Only through the ‘Thou’ can a person be an ‘I.’ In other words, the ‘supreme meeting’ in the pure relation of I-Thou, which demands the whole person, is a revelation that completely changes the person. However, in the aftermath, the contemptuous habit of the person is to warp the ‘Thou’ into an ‘It’–understandable, manageable, and conquerable. Buber likens this deplorable act as replacing God for an idol. So, what can be done? Buber exhorts two exercises: (1) treat the world and others as ‘Thou’ than ‘It” and (2) prayer. With a sacramental view, Buber affirms that the world and everything in it are ‘Thou’ pointing to the ‘eternal Thou.’ If we cannot treat worldly ‘Thou’ rightly, how can we possibly respect the ‘eternal Thou’? Next, prayer is accepting the meeting with a ‘Thou,’ which climactically breaks the I-It cycle.cf. [...]

This book is a beautiful, inspired work of art by a brilliant young man. It elucidates the subjective/objective dichotomy in human experience better than anyone before or since. As Kaufman notes, Buber has impressive antecedents including Jesus, Hillel and Kant, but this work elaborates upon the aphorisms of those earlier thinkers, making their insights fresh and more complete. Beware that Buber tends to drift off into romantic, idiosyncratic gibberish at times, especially in Part 2. So, don't expect to be able to grasp everything that he says. Still, there are many profound truths in this small volume. Respecting the subjective view of each human being does not mean that ethical behavior or truth is subjective. There is a place for objectivity. But, in relating to human beings, subjectivity must be acknowledged. ".... without It, a human being cannot live. But, whoever lives with only that is not human."

Buber's I AND THOU is one of the major examples of the modernist attempt to re-define or re-imagine the spiritual dimensions of reality. Walter Kaufmann's is the standard translation of a work that he himself admits is difficult to read or to translate. Despite these difficulties, this book is central for anyone interested in modern philosophy or spirituality. Kaufmann's introduction is thoughtful and helpful.

I love Martin Buber's language in describing relationships as either "I-Thou" or "I-It". I find this very helpful when working with groups to help them understand how subtle differences can quickly change the relationship and damage communications. While the concept is simple, the nuances and subtle issues in practice are certainly not and like all good human relations, requires a great deal of study, practice and more practice. With that in mind, this translation of the poetic original I-Thou by Buber needed more for me to understand and embrace it more fully. To that end, I found Kenneth Paul Kramer's "Martin Buber's I and Thou; Practicing Living Dialogue" to be a very good companion resource.

"I and Thou" by Martin Buber is one of the most important books ever written.First published in 1923, in my opinion, it is certainly the most important book of the 20th century. Over the course of decades, it affected religious and philosophical thinking throughout the Western world, and even in some Asian places.Buber shows how the relationships between people, between people and the world and between people and God are pivotal in how we see the world."To man the world is twofold, in accordance with his twofold attitude ...in accord with the twofold nature of the primary words he speaks ..."The one primary word is the combination I-Thou."The other primary word is the combination I-It ...," says Buber at the beginning of this work. This is much more complex than can be explained here, which is why you need to read this book of only 137 pages, including the postscript. In short, when we approach someone with the attitude of I-It, we see him or her as an object. This is the attitude we often take at work, and the attitude which allows us to exploit the world. When we approach someone with the attitude of I-Thou, we see him or her as the unique and existentially real person he or she really is at heart. We see that person's soul and can never treat him or her as an object in any way. This attitude is also the way we address the world when it seems magical, such as in moments when nature calls to us and we see it as part of ourselves and ourselves as a part of it.I-Thou is how we address God when our hearts and souls open to let the Infinite in, when the spirit of God touches us.In other words, I-Thou is when we are in true relation with anything, when the boundaries we set up between ourselves and the world come down.Unfortunately, since we live in a material world, there are times when we must address the world as I-It, which is where troubles begin.Buber was an Austrian-born Jewish philosopher who was a part of the Zionist movement as the editor of its central newspaper, but later became an advocate of a joint Palestinian-Jewish homeland to share what is Israel today.Since Buber wrote "I and Thou" in idiosyncratic German, with a highly poetic and metaphorical structure, there are differences in how some think it should be translated. Personally, I prefer the translation Buber worked on with Ronald Gregor Smith, because it retains its poetic and reverent tone, but the most available translation is a later translation by Walter Kaufmann. Readers may have to find used copies to find the Smith translation, as I did, get the Kindle edition or try the interlibrary loan system.Even if you've read this gem, it bears reading again. Different chapters of our lives can give it added meaning, which is why I read it every few years.Don't miss this one.

Review

“I'd be shucking my obligation not to . . . make a renewed case for ‘The Dream Songs.' It's a book that collects Berryman's original 77 dream songs and adds the further 308 he later wrote. This new edition includes a fond, funny and brilliant introduction by the poet and translator Michael Hofmann. Here is Berryman's masterpiece, one of those books of American poetry that, like certain mountains, has its own weather. Berryman found his form in these songs. They are serious, ambitious and elastic arrangements he could put everything into, high culture and low, Shakespeare as well as the blues, strong religious feeling as well as low impulses of every variety.” ―Dwight Garner, The New York Times“The character of Henry [the hero of The Dream Songs] is a permanent addition to our literature.” ―James Schevill“A major achievement . . . [Berryman] has written an elegy on his brilliant generation and, in the process, he has also written an elegy on himself.” ―A. Alvarez, The Observer

To say I love John Berryman's THE DREAM SONGS is a vexed statement. These poems are brilliant, inventive, exciting, and put you in a careening roller-coaster with no brakes unless you drag your feet. They are intense past imagining. Berryman himself wrote that his protagonist, Henry, has "suffered an irreversible loss". As a consequence his life is hell. I don't think you should necessarily see that sentence as metaphorical. Yes, Henry is in hell but he has been there so long he's grown accustomed to the burning and the despair. You could say every time he voices one of his "dream song" he rises above both and speaks in a firm, persuasive, commanding voice. The problem I have as a novice with these poems is one of entry. I sense there are doors and windows galore to enter and exit each poem, but I have not found them accessible. What I need are notes such as we find in volumes of Eliot, Yeats, and others. Also, a series of close reading of selected poems would provide invaluable guidance. Needless to say, you don't pick up THE DREAM SONGS for casual readings. Berryman is the Dostoyevsky of poets; be prepared for that kind of intensity and transcendence.

In the preface to Berryman’s, The Dream Songs, Merwin writes that the work was – and in my opinion, still is – a, “…primal manifestation of poetry itself.” With its broken syntax, its mediations that pit themselves against gigantic thoughts like God and the universe, and the constant, yet erratic, format, tenses and word choice, The Dream Songs, especially the initial 77 Dream Songs, indeed feel like a man who is wrestling with language in a manner that is both infantile and foreign. But no reader should assume this was accidental, much less a sign of incompetence on Berryman’s part. In his 1965 review for POETRY magazine, Frederick Seidel concluded that 77 Dream Songs were a, “…brave original work, having a magnificent obstinancy.” This is possibly the most accurate description of Berryman’s craft in 77 Dream Songs I have found. They are magnificent in their scope of content: politics, race, Greek myth, biblical allusions, and pop-culture, etc. The obstinacy, for me, refers to Berryman’s devotion to being borderline incomprehensible, and at the same time, wildly enjoyable. Berryman know exactly what he was doing; it took him 13 years to write 77 Dream Songs. In a stroke of linguistic genius, he whittled away at language until we, the reader, are left with the core details, twisted and full of knots, like a walking stick with which we can traverse the chaos of The Dream Songs.

This assemblage of six line stanzas, in precarious sonnet form, that is, Henry's de facto form, finds the text crammed and twisted, the poetic content bewilderingly mashed into many of these lines of text. What starkly emerges is the power of an intense amount of self-generated pain. The despair and self-loathing contrasts sharply with the wicked wit and occasional flash of meanness; the confessionally inclined Henry emerges as a not-too-honest, lustful and quite sad storyteller. The DREAM SONGS are anything but flawless; and yet, the flaws are so unique that they augment the collage of experience that Berryman at times compellingly depicts. Some of the SONGS are flat out brilliant, while others are just oozing with sticky pathos and self-indulgent whining. These are the loosely linked themes that bear the load of Henry's loves, losses, work-in-progress, current events, and even some domestic details.Berryman's denial notwithstanding, his Henry and Bones personas, standing unsteadily through the too-many alcoholic dawns ... well, he somehow manages to pull himself together enough to shakily get to class and lecture in order to earn some more whiskey money. And to his credit, his erudition lurks on through these self-styled sonnet songs - experimental collages, maudlin at times, fueled by the hard liquored nights.Jung would say Berryman is "too high up in his mind", a personality riddled with self-importance. Under the currents of self-loathing and pity lurks an obvious hankering for fame - and the DREAM SONGS provide the catharsis and exit for his regrets, which seem many. No, Henry is not one prone to humility - and his creator can be a real horse's ass, with many racist undercurrents weaving through the sniveling and morbid death obsessions. Yet, throughout all the textual dross, lies the glint of poetic nuggets waiting to be claimed by the metaphorically intrepid.

Berryman’s poetry is complex and deep. There were many points where I felt lost and simply decided to swim along with the words. I didn’t regret any of the time I spent with this book. I notice some reviewers observed that this is a book that you can return to year after year and I anticipate doing so myself. There is beauty here, sometimes of a very dark kind, and some passages that I would read over and over again because they seemed to so true. Highly recommended for fans of modern poetry.

Henry's pelt was put on sundry wallswhere it did much resemble Henry andthem persons was delighted.Especially his long & glowing tailby all them was admired, and visitors. They whistled: This is it!--From Dream Song 16. That final "it" is italicized. You will admire his long & glowing tail. You will whistle, as I have so often whistled, This is it. You will read these poems again and again. Indispensable.

This was the book that inspired me to attend grad school (so should I send Berryman's estate the bill?). The book follows Henry, a persona developed by John Berryman...many of the poems are autobiographical and confessional in nature. The poems are wild and yet Berryman strongly adheres to a sonnet form.A great book in the canon and not often celebrated enough.

I studied this book at the graduate level. Berryman is frequently difficult, but truly important to study for a rounded perspective of 20th century poetry. While not easily accessible, his work takes off in magical ways that always amaze. A must read for the serious poet, but consider reading other writings about these poems.

I have -- temporarily, I hope -- mislaid my paperback edition of this book. I bought the Kindle edition prior to a trip. There are not nearly as many of the stories as in the paperback edition. I feel cheated.Update: I found my paperback edition. It contains 200 tales. The Kindle edition has 53.

It is a great collection of traditional folktales, many of which exist in other traditions in different versions. I read the Italian version as a kid and I still have fond memories of it. This translation may not be perfect in capturing the tones and colors of the original but it works. What is really poor is the overall quality of the paper, print and small font, which makes it hard to read, and the editorial work, which left here and there typos and other avoidable mistakes.

Italian Folktales by Italo Calvino is a marvelous collection of stories akin to Grimms Fairy Tales, or Charles Parrault’s Tales of Mother Goose. As the preface explains, Italy lacked, until this book, a ‘comprehensive book of Italian folk tales, one that would be representative of the entire country and intended for popular consumption as well.’ Calvino must have expended an immense effort, working through 19th century source materials, to compile these stories, but none of this scholarly toil is recorded in the book except for brief mention in the preface. The book includes no information about where and when each story appeared, what variations exist, echoes in neighboring countries, none of that. This is not a work of anthropology or literary history but, as the title says, a collection of folk tales. What distinguishes the book isn’t scholarly embellishment but the fact that the stories are collected, assembled, edited, and arranged by a master story teller.Folk tales are 33% plot, 33% conflict, and 33% theme. Little attention goes to setting (once upon a time in a land far away) or character, (there was a barber who had three sons). Vaguely described settings and stereotyped characters help make these stories understandable to anyone at any time or place. Where plot is preeminent, who better to hold the tiller than Calvino, a master of plot. Consider his If on a Winter’s Night a Traveler, a novel in which the narrator engages the reader regarding the plot several times and still succeeds in drawing attention back to what happens next in the story with the intensity of a spy thriller. His sure hand of story-telling was precisely the hand needed to arrange these folk stories. The collection begins with ‘Whoever Loses His Temper Loses the Bet’ and ends with ‘The Lame Devil,’ and delivers in total 53 nuggets of narrative, involving giants and fairies, monkeys and ducks, kings and hunchbacks. Enjoy.

I'm glad I bought this book. This is one book I've wanted to read for many years and never seemed to have the time and so finally decided to just buy my own copy. I was hoping the stories and prose in this book would be as rich as Grimm's Fairy Tales but it seems to not be the case. The stories are much shorter and the prose is not as rich. The tales seem to be more like micro stories and the imagery seems to be lacking. Maybe I am being overly harsh in my criticism but overall I was disappointed with the book. I am going to keep my copy in spite of my frustrations with it. I wonder sometimes if the problem lies in the translation from Italian to English because a lot of linguistic nuances get lost in translations. Perhaps the Italian copy is a more enjoyable read (I suspect so) as is the case with many translations.

When I was a bride my husband gave this to me in Italian. Now that I'm ancient myself I wanted to consider each story within my native language. Each tale is remarkable, because of its honing over centuries to the traditions of a specific city-state within the now unified Italy. The themes are decidedly different from those of Germanic origins. Perhaps these will set your heart wisdom aflame.

I think the most fascinating part of the book is the appendix where the author deescribees how he piece together these stories from vastly different sources. My only objection is that some of the stories are just variations of earlier told stories.

Want your kids to be smarter? Read them this! Science says reading folk tales to kids expands their mind.

The folktales are fascinating, I am interested in Italian culture, and this book is just a joy to read.

My only complaint is the density of this book, I have highlighted and dog eared too many pages. Each concept and approach is well though out, and practical in its planning. I've not finished the text but am page turning each chapter like a mystery novel. I highly recommend this work in paperback as you will be returning to items you-too will be dog ear'ing!

Excellent book covering the basics through advanced concepts.

This book offers an excellent holistic approach to managing risk. It is easy to read and understand the concepts through incorporation of case studies allowing the reader to see first hand the practices in action.
