The title page of this edition includes the following words: "A new revised and abridged edition of Festival of Opera."I sort of wish I'd been aware of that fact BEFORE ordering my copy of this 554-page, 1989 paperback. I've subsequently ordered (a used copy of) the original, 704-page, 1957 hardback edition. Not only does Festival of Opera cover 129 (instead of just 100) operas, but also it includes intermittent illustrations (black-and-white line drawings by Fritz Kredel). NO illustrations remain in this 1989 abridgement.The deletion of such "adequate" (far from stunning) pictures doesn't greatly perturb me (though I do prefer having `em to not having `em). But the excision of such operas as Cilea's "Adriana Lecouvreur," Monteverdi's "Il combattimento di Tancredi e Clorinda" and Berlioz' "The Damnation of Faust" does somewhat perturb me (even though the 29 deleted works are the relatively less popular ones). [Note: On the "plus" side(?), Britten's "Peter Grimes" is included in this 1989 edition (it wasn't included in the 1957 edition).]Also, the final, 32-page "index" of the 1957 hardcover edition has been totally deleted from this 1989 paperback edition. That's a fairly significant omission, insofar as you can no longer look up (for example) a composer's surname alphabetically to find the page numbers pertaining to his opera(s).The only other noteworthy difference between this 1989 paperback and its 1957 antecedent involves the editions' respective (different) prefaces. This paperback includes only a (nearly two-page) preface by the author; by contrast, the 1957 hardback includes only a (nearly three-page) preface by Dario Soria. [That said, neither preface is significant enough to constitute a major selling point for either edition.]Due to sheer age, the pages' paper in this 1989 paperback edition has somewhat tanned (especially at the pages' outer edges); in this regard it's virtually on a par with the still older (albeit more UNIFORMLY tanned) paper of the 1957 hardcover edition. This is a neat book for newcomers and seasoned listeners alike. If you need a light paperback to take with you while you are travelling or use it as a reference material at home before or after viewing an opera on DVD/Blue ray, this is it.This is not your gigantic coffee table book of operas, chock a block with picture etc.; it is a modest paperback with no photos. The author writes with a wry humour and provides 100 operas with a synopsis of the work, how the work came to be composed, and the circumstances etc. - followed by an act by act explanation. Each opera is a chapter and is explained in about 4 to 5 pages. I found the author's writing style engaging, injecting humor on several occasions. The author also writes in a casual and easy to read style. No pedantic paragraphs or complex musical terminology is used to show off the author's authority.I am a big opera enthusiast who just started out some months ago. The greatest way for me to get know the repertoire is to buy DVD and blue rays (if I relied on going strictly to opera performances in my city -not having the advantage of being in New York - aka MET, I 'd probably only get to know 3 operas a year and I have 100's to get to know). So I watch operas in the comfort of my home, getting acquainted with the stories, the singing and the music. What I noticed consistently is that the DVDs/Blue rays I order come with a very small booklet which at times have very little write up in terms of synopsis. So I started relying On Wikipedia for the story and details of the act till I checked out this book on Amazon. Since I like to see the first viewing of an opera without knowing anything about it so that I have no plot spoilers, I do not look up the plot in this book if it is the first time I am seeing that opera. After seeing it once on DVD/Blue-ray, I refer to this book and read the story and it makes a lot more sense to me. I found myself re-reading certain opera chapter on any given day with no apparent reason, but to browse through and read something. Each reading gets me more interested in the opera. Some opera chapters require reading and re-reading (esp. if you start seeing 3 operas a week, you can get your stories and characters mixed up). Some operas like Berlioz's Les Troyens have a long story arc and it helps to refresh your memory quickly by reading that chapter if you have 10 minutes to kill. You can have the book by your side while watching the Blue-ray or even take it to opera performance as it is not too heavy.Just don't expect each chapter to be an exhaustive essay on the opera because the author has to cover 100 operas in over 500 pages. Some operas take more pages case in point, Wagner's ring cycle due to the amount of material to cover. For subjects like the ring, you are better off buying separate books which analyses all of Wagner's 4 operas, since there is so much to read up on. I think this is a great book, although it may seem modest and unglamorous; but Henry W Simon's writing is great. In other words, no pomp and splendor type coffee table book with glossy photographs etc., but packs a punch and gives you the information you need to the point. Get this book and enjoy your operas.

This book is EXCEPTIONAL. One of my very best references -- and there are other good ones -- for top-rated operas. First of all, it is not easy to pick 100 "Great" operas to build the list on. Secondly, his research is astounding. I learned things about operas I thought I knew pretty well. Third -- his writing style is delightful. Fourth - he does a good job of briefly telling the story of how the opera came to be, and of how it has fared since premiere.I am a lifelong fan of the Milton Cross book "Complete Stories of the Great Operas" - a wonderful book, but in many respects Simon's book is better. More conversational, a bit more current, more readable, more concise on the synopsis, and a bit more background information. Both books are quite dated. If I were to recommend just ONE of these to come out in a new edition, it would be Simon's -- with about 50 more operas included. The one downside of the book IMHO is that it is limited to only 100 operas, and of course they were all in the repertoire before the 1960 publication date.GIving this book five stars is a very easy decision for me. Thanks to Amazon.com for leading me on to it in the first place.

It should be named couple of words about everything concerning chakras and meditation with a few examples.There is also poor editing and many repetitions of the same text. I am really disappointed. It looks like free e-book for total beginners. Totally not worth buing.

This book is poorly written, the most basic of information is given in a sporadic and untidy way. It's filled with spelling and grammatical errors and is difficult to read because of it. It seems the author didn't even bother to reread their work before self-publishing. I had the misfortune to purchase a hardcopy of this book, please don't waste your time or money.

I enjoyed this book very much - the small equine breeds were covered with good examples from ambassadors of the breeds represented.

This book claims to be a "Celebration of miniature horses and shetland ponies" There are few photographs of small equines just being their adorable selves. There is too much focus on the show horse, the greased up faces, overgrown hooves, artificial gaits and unhappy performance. Some of these poor horses look like Tenn. Walking Horses and Saddlebreds! Those horses are the most abused show horses ever, their hooves are built up, sored and stacked to get the super high stepping gait, pain is involved. Are they doing these things to the little guys too? Looks like it. There are also pictures of broken, tied up, set up tails! Unbelievable! All of those practices are considered by most people and orginizations to be cruel and unnessesary, for looks only... no matter how uncomfortable the horse is.I will return my copy.Holly

I have the Kindle version of this book. DO NOT order it! I got only an indexed reference list, and no book whatsoever! Zero text.

What a wonderful adventure into the lives of ponies. I enjoyed the history of the people, their ponies and minis. The photography is outstanding. This is a great coffee table book for the pony enthusiast. It's also a great introduction to small equine for folks interested in ponies and minis. Kudos to the authors.

The author has done an amazing job updating a Where's Waldo concept to make it more inclusive and complex. His sense of wry humor is evident on every page so I actually will help my daughter look for the weird sea creatures without wanting to wrap myself in a straightjacket. I am going to be giving this at every elementary school kid party we have!

I never know what to get my 8 year old nephew but this gift was a hit! He loves to "beat me" by finding the mermaids before I do. There are so many creative characters too. His favorite is the Babysitter and mine is Mer-pug. This is now my go to gifts for all the kids in my life.

So much to say about this amazing book!Chuck, the author, has done an amazing job. His sense of humor and use of art is outstanding and I cannot put the book down.Every elementary child should have a copy!!

This is the only book on disc golf that I have and it has really helped my game a lot. The most important thing that I learned from this book is that you do not throw a disc golf disc like you throw a Frisbee! This is very important to remember. I have always been a very good Frisbee player but found that I was having lots of trouble throwing a disc golf disc straight and level or to even get any distance from them. This book helped me fix those problems. I still do not throw perfectly every time but at least now when I screw up a throw I have an idea of what I did wrong.This book goes over the history of the sport which is very interesting and covered pretty well. It also covers the basic rules and customs of the game so you will not look like a fool when playing with more experienced players. Most importantly for me is that this book covers most of the different kinds of throws that you will see in the game and each throw is broken down into its basic elements (grip, approach, release, etc.). What I did not like and why I did not give it 5 stars, was that the drawing were not as clear as I would have liked. I found myself rereading the descriptions about things like how to grip the disc for a certain type of throw over a few times and wishing there were a few pictures showing a real hand holding the disc from a few different angles.This book also has a funny chapter on the Tao of disc golf which get funnier once you get more experience playing the sport.To sum up I would recommend this book for anyone starting out in the sport or for anyone like me that has been playing for a year or so with little real guidance as to how to improve their play.

Recommended for All Beginners. Well written and illustrated. Useful Information. Would have saved me a lot of time and money buying the wrong discs to start out with.

I've been throwing for only 6 months, but I've been a spotter at the USDG Championship for two years, so I know the game both as a newb and as an official.Bottom line is the book is excellent. If I have one quibble it's the list of discs. The author barely scratches the surface of available discs, which change year to year, so this is something best left out of a physical book. That and, well, it's kind of a case of TMI because he can't list all the discs, just enough to be confusing. Innova alone makes more than 60 flavors of discs. Don't go there.Here's my advice to the new thrower: Forget about distance drivers. All you'll get is serious fade and not much distance. High performance discs will only perform when thrown really, really fast. Avoid them.Buy a fairway driver and a putter. For Innova I recommend a Leopard and an Aviar. For Discraft I like the Buzzz and Magnet. If you have the cash, buy 3 of each: 3 Leopards, 3 Aviars. That way, when you practice, if one disc flies weird you know it's you and not the disc.If I can recommend a companion book it has to be Zen Golf by Dr. Joseph Parent. It's about stick and ball golf, but the theory applies: Learn the basics, then trust your body to figure out the rest. Simple as that.Buy this book, buy a couple of discs, go out and have fun!

I like how the book is organized. Written conversationally, it conveys an interest and excitement in the game. The book's organization into specific chapters (history, approach, putting, etc.) makes it easy to pick it up and put it down, try some tips out on the course and then refer back to a certain chapter for a better understanding. Even experts would benefit from the in-depth description of different ways to the throw the discs, and I really liked the appendix that outlines the characteristics of most all the different discs out on the market. The graphics are good with regard to holds and feet placement. As a beginning disc golfer, I have found this book to be inspirational and helpful.

I first bought this book after only throwing five or six times, and man did that help me get a better idea of what I should be working on, and most importantly in what order! This book was a life saver to me as a beginner! Now that i read through it, it's nice to brush though it from time to time just to brush up on things you may be over looking. I've loaned this book to a couple of my friends I throw with, and even though they have been throwing for years, they were still suprised with the tips they were able to pick up from this guide! Also as a newbie, there is a great guide to discs in the back, really outlines the disc selection pretty well, making it easy for me to know what to look for!

When I first picked up the sport for a new recreational past time to aid in my recovery from an injury I grabbed this book. After reading it I couldn't wait to get my starter set and go to my local disc golf course recently installed here. I wouldn't consider it a must read for the sport or the game but it holds true to the cover. It has all you need to know about the game, and you're definitely going to want to play ;)

One of my professors used this for my disc golf PE class. The dude who wrote the book was fun, but kind of awkward. It was good enough for the class though!

I ordered these books for our volunteer coaches. Great books highly recommend them to help those who want to learn and those who want to teach.

For the most part, this book is helpful. Having said that, there are some errors in the book. I would re-work calculations trying to figure out how I got something wrong only to realize after e-mailing my teaching that it was the book that was incorrect! As you can imagine, this is incredibly frustrating. My teachers ended up sending a letter to the company with the errors in the book, so maybe they'll come out with a new edition? Aside from that, it was helpful.

The perfect solution for not wanting to spend a lot of money on a newer book. This book does have some noticable variations compared to the 7th edition. In the practice areas there are less questions than the newer version, some of the chapters are switched around, and some highlighted areas are colored differently sometimes making it a bit difficult to follow along when a class requires the newer edition.I got this book for $5 (including shipping). It was definitely worth it! It's a great option for anyone who's tired of paying full price for a book and barely getting half of it back at the end of the year.

I am a former student of Mrs. Bucholz, so maybe I'm biased, but she was an incredible teacher who really cares for her students, and I think that is reflected in the book. I like the way things are explained simply and with lots of practice. Overall, I would recommend this book to any friend in another nursing school program.

I'm new to inline skating and I'm looking for a book to get me started. My experience with ice skating and skiing is helping me. I'm looking for a book to, "take me to the next level."This is a good book, but it isn't that.There are some good pictures that show how to do certain maneuvers in time lapse. That helps. However, sometimes illustrations rather than pictures are the most effective means to get a concept across to the reader.The written descriptions on how to do certain things, such as a Y-stop, are good, but not always thorough enough. It would help if the author would build up to certain tasks.For example, the author might teach certain points about turning, which could then be used to form the foundation of a Y-stop.Learning is about developing a foundation and building on that foundation. Too much in this book was independent of everything else I need to learn. I just didn't come away feeling that I had moved to the next level because of this book.Don't get me wrong, I learned quite a bit. However, this book wasn't as thorough as I had hoped.

got this for a class but i can't really say anything bad about it... it speaks for itself.
