Didn't realize it was a chapter book, very happy regardless

We are using this book for a study of China. Absolutely recommend this book! So far we have enjoyed learning about the Han and Song Dynasty. We learned about Confucius, The Great Wall of China and the Silk Road. Author is enjoyable and information is presented in a manner that engages our middle and high school students.

The essence of Chinese culture and history captivatingly told for readers of all ages. Adeline Yen Mah tells you these stories in short fascinating segments. I also recommend "Autumn Leaves" by this author. Her books are very difficult to put down until you've come to the last page and there is no more....

Enjoyed this concise overview of China. Better than a travel guide, it gives the reader an elementary understanding of the people and events that have shaped China's hixtory. In short sections, one can learn a great deal. and can pick it up and lay it down without having to go back and refresh one's memory. Highly recvommend it.

This is a good bokk to take when traveling. It is small and the chapters are only a few pages long.Lots of pictures.I think it is a neat little book to share with adolescent readers as well.

As a member of the Stangl/Fulper Collectors Club, I, and the rest of the club, had been waiting five years for this book to finally be published (I was beginning to think the book may have been a hoax). And now that it finally has been released, I am very disappointed. The book as a whole seems very disorganized, it is difficult to find items, the color pictures are horrible (the color separations are way off throughout the book, which is supposed to be resource guide) and the writing is grade-schoolish at best. I expected a far more polished work from someone who is supposed to be so knowledgeable. The pricing guides are also questionable at best, with some items very undervalued, and others overvalued. I have to wonder if the author and his partner have set the prices to reflect their current inventory as they are also dealers of Stangl & Fulper potteries. Additionally, the book is far too large and cumbersome to carry with you when you shop, that is a definite drawback. Other books on the same subject are far more portable and conducive to collectors out shopping.

Once again Rob has announced himself as the premier Stangl Historian.As President of the Stangl Bird Collectors Club. . . I refer my membership and others to this book when questions arise, that do not pertain to our particular specialty. The pictures and descriptions are complete and the references are precise. Rob continues to be the leading promotor and disseminator of Stangl/Fulper information to those who love collecting these items. This book would be a valuable resource for anyone interested in the pottery at all. Pick it up.

This is one of the finest reference books in the industry today. Thoroughly researched and no stone left unturned, in fact, a remarkable manuscript by anyone's standards. I can hardly wait for his sequel to come out on Stangl Artware, Lamps and Birds. I hear its going to be a doozy!!I strongly suspect that Mr. Harvey Duke still has a lot of his own books to sell and has sent one of his henchmen to "stir the pot". FOR SHAME!!

This book traces the history of copyrights. The earliest British copyright laws were instruments of censorship. The publishers got monopoly power to print and distribute specific works. The book says that Thomas Jefferson expressed some serious misgivings about copyrights. Thomas Jefferson was suspicious of concentrations of power and artificial monopolies. While Thomas Jefferson acknowledged that a limited time copyright could possibly encourage some creativity, it could also do some harm to some people. The book points out that Thomas Jefferson maintained his skepticism about the benefits of copyrights for many years. Thomas Jefferson feared the monopolists could use their state-granted power to enrich themselves by the copyright holder having the power to create artificial scarcity by limiting access and fixing prices. This book is an interesting and relevant book to read.

I am not sure how I found this book - but I am glad that I did. In about 200 pages Professor Vaidhyananathan presents a very readable history of the copyright in the US and abroad.Originally added to the Constitution to encourage creativity and to improve the democratic process, the copyright has evolved into a series of complex rules that seem to work almost in the opposite direction of the original intent.Have you ever wondered how Mark Twain and Groucho Marx figured into the discussion of copyright issues? If so you can find out in this book - they both had very interesting roles. What about the diversity of legal opinions - from Lawrence Lessig, to the Ninth Circuit, to Mr. Justice Hand - all of who grappled with the rights of the few versus the rights of the many.Added to the history is an intelligent and readable discussion of the policy issues related to the copyright. What kinds of policies will balance the creator's incentives and at the same time improve the level of public discussions? How long should rights survive? What elements should be included in the copyright? What are the reasonable standards for parody? Should there be differing standards for databases, books, movies, music and computer programs? The risk for all of those questions is that they can evolve into hopeless discussions of legal absurdities. In effect, that is what happened with the Digital Millenium Copyright Act.But Vaidhyananathan does not let himself get stuck in all that goo - he deals with each of those issues and more in a concise and interesting fashion. At the same time he has the larger picture of the broader purposes of copyright.You will be challenged and fascinated by this book and the issues it raises.

Great read raises many questions about copyright and how we got to the point we are at with it in the digital era.

I don't agree with everything, but he seems to have a good grasp of the constitution and how commercial interests keep trying to thwart the intent of Article 8. Recommended.

I have been reading your book and am alternately exhilarated and despairing. From other research on the web on this issue, I keep seeing over and over that without copyright protection, people wouldn't have incentive to create. What a load of muck. Creative people NEED to create. They also need to not starve to death, of course. But creating things in and of itself is rewarding. If money is what motivates someone, they should become stockbrokers or something that more honestly reflects their values. I think that motivation by money, and creativity are almost mutually exclusive; once money becomes the motive, creativity is dead, or at least mortally wounded. I know the thrill of creating. I do art without any compensation at all, because I need to and want to, and have been a computer programmer for years, marvelling that someone was willing to pay me for something that is so much FUN! Creativity is inherently rewarding.

This semester my son and I were determined to purchase as many textbooks through Internet vendors to try and save some money. In fact one of his instructors did not order texts through the bookstore and wanted students to use the Internet. This book was one of them. It arrived in a short time and this experience will definitely make us try again purchasing texts through the Internet in future semesters.

And, even more incredibly, it was written by a non-attorney (Siva is a professor at the U. of Wisconsin, School of Information Studies). "Copyrights and Copywrongs" covers the history and bastardization of American copyright law. Siva attempts to make relatively simple suggestions for fixing our complex, arcane system of protecting intellectual property rights.Siva begins his "story" recounting in incredibly understandable terms, the history of the copyright ranging from the framing of the U.S. Constitution, the rights afforded musicians (recently challenged by the likes of ...) and of course, literary and digital works. Siva does not concentrate on the theoretical nature of this quagmire rather, he examines the issues as it relates to current issues and events making the content interesting and readable. He argues, very persuasively, that the current copyright laws in their punitive and restrictive form y hinder creativity and free expression. Further, he compellingly argues that the original intent of the laws were designed for flexible application to maintain cultural balance.The issues framed in this book encompass the very future of creativity vital to industry, commerce, and free expression. A very enjoyable read even given the somewhat difficult nature of the subject matter.

First, a review of this book, then a comment about the series.We ran into this book about twelve years ago. We were doing a homeschool unit on the Sumerians, and this was a very welcome addition to our curriculum. The kids loved the beautiful pictures, well-researched detail, and delightful story. At the time I thought "too bad this artist doesn't do the rest of the epic".Foolish us -- it would have taken just a little digging to find that she did! So don't stop here, get the rest of the series. This is a masterpiece of both art and boiling a long story down to its essence.

The artwork was lovely. The language was good.It's just such a pity that it wasn't actually the story of Gilgamesh. I purchased it to share this story with my children as part of our studies in literature and history. After pre-reading it, I won't even bother reading it to them. I haven't got time to un-teach. It's simply not Gilgamesh. They'd be better off watching that Star Trek episode than this drivel. They'd come to a more actual understanding of the myth-cycle.

Re "Gilgamesh the King": My long attention span 3 year old is smitten with this book and has requested it twice a day for a week. She loves the illustrations which are charming and not dark. This volume ends on a happy note -- good transforms evil thru the power of generosity and love. If this doesn't sound like the epic as you remember it, well, technically it is not, but the liberties the author has taken with the story make for better reading for the preschool set! I think age appropriate versions are an excellent way to introduce materials which can become increasingly complex over time. If you are aiming for a telling which is close to the original, this is not the book for you. THIS volume succeeds in reaching listeners who can tolerate a couple paragraphs of text per page with an uplifting message and visual imagry consistent w the art of the region. Quite an accomplishment!

Age Recommendation: 8 - up; Around eight children start to develop a taste in historical books, such as legends. Gilgamesh is a not as well-known epic about the Mesopotamia region. The picture book is also part of a three book series.Summary: Gilgamesh was sent by the Sun God to rule over the city of Uruk. He was part god, and part man. He did not have any friends, and was a cruel king. He decided to build a wall around his city. The people in his city originally supported his wall, but eventually grew tired and frustrated. His people prayed to the Sun God, and the sun god sent Enkidu. Enkidu lived with the animals, and was a good man. Enkidu prevented a man from killing an animal with his god-like strength. The man told Gilgamesh about Enkidu's strength, and Gilgamesh was furious. Gilgamesh sends a beautiful singer to the woods to lure Enkidu to the city. Gilgamesh wanted to kill him in front of the city to reinforce his reputation. The beautiful singer and Enkidu fell in love. Enkidu left the forest and his animal friends, and went to the city to challenge Gilgamesh. Gilgamesh and En kidu fought, but were equal in strength. Gilgamesh tripped, and would have died if Enkidu did not save him. After Enkidu saved Gilgamesh, they became friends. Once Gilgamesh had a friend, he stopped work on the wall, and there was peace in the city.Critical Review: Gilgamesh the King is written and illustrated by Ludmila Zeman. Zeman begins the picture book in the expected, "Long ago in the land of... " which sets the stage for a traditional folktale (p. 1). The illustrations also support the folktale, by using `ancient' looking images. The colors also look gold based, which makes the images look older. The images bring the words to life. For example, when the story is talking about all the men in the city building a giant wall around the city. You can see the magnitude of people, and the height of the huge wall (p. 3-4). Without any words, it would still be very easy to tell the epic of Gilgamesh based on the pictures. Although this story is part of a trilogy, it can stand alone. It has closure, and tells a complete story. Also, some historical information about the epic of Gilgamesh is included after the story. I appreciate the use of rhetorical questions throughout the text. For example, after Enkidu sees a man killing an animal, he asks himself, "Why would anyone want to do that?" (p. 6). The text includes both more complex sentences. For example, "The earth shook and lightning flashed across the sky, as if the gods themselves were fighting for control of the world" (p. 16). The text also includes short, simple sentences. For example, "He was no longer alone. He had found a friend" (p. 19). The longer sentences tell an elaborate story, while the shorter sentences focus on the meaning of the sentences. The book kept me engaged as a college student, and I think an intermediate reader would definitely be interested in the historical significance of one of the first epics ever written down, and the action of the folktale itself.

This is the third book in the trilogy. It is beautifully illustrated. I used it in school after showing a video on great literature in which the author explains her motivation for writting the books.

Using for school. My 3rd grader was able to see, understand and describe the comparison and contrast to the Biblical stories and see the difference between man made versions and the God-given true version of historical events.

This book was going to be a birthday present for my grandson, and it is a beautiful and meaningful book with gorgeous illustrations, a retelling of one of humankind's oldest stories. But the book arrived in a thin flexible package, which allowed the book, a paperback, to crease in several places. It is not present quality.

Bought for 5- and 7-year old boys who are studying Sumerian civilization, and enjoyed immensely by both. The writing is evocative but not too course, and the last page of each of this series has an overview of historical and thematic aspects of the story and time that were very useful for home study. We used these in concert with an online interactive archaeological excavation program out of the University of Chicago, and I think the fact that the illustrations evoked the kinds of artifacts the kids found really made concrete that this story was not just like the other fictions books my kids have, but a story that functions as a window into a long-gone time. We also really enjoyed discussing how themes in this story (such as the flood and the serpent and immortality) would come up later, both in Greek mythology and in Christian mythology.Altogether a fantastical account of an already interesting story with evocative illustrations. The only negative is that I wish something like this existed for general Sumerian mythology, as the author is adept at referring to otherwise non-child-friendly themes in ways that suggest but do not elaborate.

The book’s front cover has been ripped off at some point and was taped back on with clear packing tape. To be honest, this text book looks like it was used in a street fight.

This textbook navigates you easily and clearly through topics. You can skip or switch them. Also, there are some good simply ideas about the science projects. Moreover, I love the colored pictures, but it is me!

Condition of the book was excellent. I bought it because this is the text in my son's class and it is a very large book to be toting back and forth to school everyday. Thank goodness it 12 years and therefore inexpensive to purchase.
