I wish I read this book earlier. Though I loved math and science I always received middling grades. I was never taught ANY study skills or strategies growing up and just muddled my way through with brute force. I eventually became a science teacher and bought this book to see if I could use it to reach my students better and it opened my eyes not only to good strategies but how the technical parts of our brain even work.I'm going back to school again for a degree in engineering and successfully achieved a 4.0 this first quarter using these strategies. This would have been completely impossible for me in the past.

A Mind for Numbers is written for students of math and science, but Barbara Oakley’s perspective, interviews, and recommendations are very useful for everybody who wants to be a SMART 21st Century lifelong learner. It is a practical book that reflects the best knowledge about how our brains process things – both logically and creatively, from the details up AND from the ideas down. I strongly recommend it to anyone who wants to learn better – or who wants to help a scholar who wants to excel and LEARN in school.Oakley uses good teaching/learning approaches in this book. It is peppered with stories and even pictures that bring lessons to life. The stories are from very successful scientists – many of whom struggled to learn or were even written off by their teachers. They are stories that say – “persist, be smart about how you learn, and you will succeed.” This, of course, is the learning mindset that is so crucial for discovery and living an unstoppable life.Oakley also distributes insights about her core topics – building up and reinforcing the key ideas throughout the book. Ultimately, she concludes that 10 practices are critical (she calls them “Ten Rules of Good Studying.” They apply to lifelong learning as well as to learning for school – especially to information and processes you want to remember:Use recall. Don’t just review what you want to remember. Actively pull your insights out of your own brain. This, of course, is a key practice in my Unstoppable You. Oakley offers many reinforcements of this important way to support learningTest Yourself. This is something anyone can do about any topic you want to remember. For kids it’s flash cards, for adults it might be asking yourself what you know about a topic before a meeting or reading, and then doing it again afterwards.Chunk information. Organizing ideas and facts into categories, pictures and diagrams, songs, and other mental files can help you remember and understand at a deeper level. Connecting ideas to what you know and to each other creates more neural connections and thus more ways to find what you need when you need it.Space repetition. Oakley practices this by revisiting and enhancing these 10 rules throughout this book. The lesson is to work on something for a shorter period of time (30 minutes?) and then do something less demanding. When you return to the learning project later, you will be fresher and your automatic system (she calls it your “diffused processing mode”) will have done some undercover work to process your initial learning.Alternate different problem-solving techniques. She talks about how this works in math – work on equations for a while, then on verbal problems, then do a test, etc. The point is, don’t get stuck on one way of learning something. Get a variety of perspectives – some big picture, some detailed. This “interleaving” is a pretty valuable approach for any topic.Take breaks. When you are stuck or tired from focusing on solving a problem/learning, stop and do something that isn’t so taxing. Your automatic (diffused) processing will continue to work on the problem unconsciously and you will be able to have a new perspective when you come back to it.Use explanatory questioning and simple analogies. Try explaining what you are learning in a simple way – preferably to someone else. Tell them what it is “like” (an example she gives if that the flow of electricity is like the flow of water). This more deeply engrains the knowledge in your brain and may get you some clarifying questions.Focus. This is a very important and often broken rule. It is clear that your brain can’t work on more than one complex problem at a time. So, as many others suggest, turn off the phones, text messaging, loud music, and create a space where you can concentrate.Eat your frogs first. That is, do the hardest things first when you have the energy.Make a mental contrast. This is equivalent to the imagination quality presented in Unstoppable You: see where you want to be and compare it the where you are. Let this be motivating. There are many specific tips and encouraging comments in this book. And for students, there is a lot of good help related to working with teachers, studying with others, dealing with procrastination, taking tests, dealing with anxiety, letting go of the need to be perfect in order to be open to insights and to correct errors in thinking, remembering facts and methods, and more.Oakley is a very respected educator who came to the sciences by accident when she was in military service. We should be glad that she discovered math and science and became curious about how to be a master learner and teacher in these areas. We all benefit from her perspective, examples, and tips.

Dr. Oakley does a masterful job in introducing the science of learning to readers in a way that is very engaging, practical, infectious and liberating. Her work provided me with a functional "User's Manual" to this magnificent gift that I have called my brain. For years I operated under the cloud of misconception regarding my own learning abilities causing me to shy away from many subjects/careers because I thought I was just not good enough. Now, I realize those moments of "confusion" or what appeared to be my inability to grasp a subject, was a result of my uninformed approach to learning and my lack of understanding in how my brain actually processes information (i.e. focused / diffused mode of thinking, chunking and top-down thinking etc..). "A Mind for Numbers" has given me a renewed passion for learning and released my pent up thirst for knowledge and self-actualization. I highly recommend Dr. Oakley's book. It "empowers ordinary people to do extraordinary things" through the power and gift of learning!!!

The author of this book admits to not being able to read a clock in her elementary school years, yet she did deem herself a "failure" and eventually wrote this book on learning and comprehension. I like to think of it as learning how to learn and eventually having a passion for learning. We don't often learn (put into long term memory) things we are not passionate about, and sometimes it takes hard work and training to learn how to have that passion to learn.I am a student majoring in the sciences who suffered as a child with basic math and reading. I failed miserably in school and did not do well until after I had my daughter at the age of 19 and entered into full time college where I put my mind to things, determined to accomplished them; graduating with a 4.0 GPA. This book is something I wish I had before I started my endeavor in schooling because it would have benefited me mentally and even helped retain information. I recommend this book for every person; student or not; just read it to sharpen your mind. For students, I recommend studying this book as though it were a textbook and taking notes. I had a notebook specifically for this book when I realized it was a book worth taking notes from.As a mother, homeschooling a dyslexic daughter, I appreciate her truthfulness which gives hope for my 8 year old daughter who struggles to read a clock, but excels in engineering and design as well as having a complex vocabulary (though a struggling reader) and horsemanship. I am now in the place to teach the passion for learning, and teaching how to learn to another person. This book will surely help me through the experience.

This is a very useful book. It was clearly written. The lessons I learned from this book are very applicable to me.The author's approach was to relate her own struggles with mathematics, and the methods she used to improve her mathematical abilities, These are folk remedies. She presents scientific research to support her lessons. Also, she uses anecdotes from other students and teachers to amplify these lessons. It was so good that I brought two (2) copies: one for myself and one for my niece as starts high school. I hope that it encourages her to study mathematics and science.

About the Author

William Butler Yeats was born in Dublin on June 13, 1865. Yeats attended school in London and in Dublin but spent his summers in Connaught, in the west of Ireland. Early in his career, Yeats was part of the fin de siècle in London and involved with Irish literary revival groups. His first book of poetry, Mosada, A Dramatic Poem, was published in 1886 followed by The Wanderings of Oisin in 1889. With Lady Gregory he founded the Irish Theater and served as the chief playwright. After 1910, Yeats's dramatic art drastically changed toward a more esoteric and experimental style, heavily influenced by the Japanese Noh plays. He was appointed to the Irish Senate in 1922 and received the Nobel Prize in 1923. His poetry volumes, in particular The Wild Swans at Coole (1919), Michael Robartes and the Dancer (1921), The Tower (1928), The Winding Stair and Other Poems (1933), and Last Poems and Plays (1940) distinguished Yeats as one of the most influential English language poets of the twentieth century. William Butler Yeats died on January 28, 1939 in Roquebrune, France and was buried in Ireland.Jessica Hische is a letterer, illustrator, typographer, and web designer. She currently serves on the Type Directors Club board of directors, has been named a Forbes Magazine "30 under 30" in art and design as well as an ADC Young Gun and one of Print Magazine’s "New Visual Artists". This is THE reference on the subject; an incredible tool for research, and I recommend it highly. My only complaint, and the reason I gave it 4 stars instead of 5, is that I would have liked to have seen the Native names for the plants listed, and it seems to me that that would be appropriate for this work.

I can really appreciate this book because I know how much work went into creating it. Although I wish there was more detail about how the plants were used I'm able to cross reference other books to get the information I need. The layout of the book gives you the ability to attack a given plant inquiry from many different perspectives. For example, you can decide you want to know what a particular group of Native Americans did with a specific plant and look up the plant in the main body of the book (Catalog of Plants) and it will summarize the uses by the following categories: drug, food, fiber, dye & other. Then within each of these categories each group of Native American tribe is named with the uses if it applies to them. All of the uses are referenced to the literature (bibliography) giving you the ablity to obtain original articles if desired. From another perspective, you can have an interest in the Cherokee and go to the section "Index of Tribes" which will allow you to look up each of the many specific subcategories of the main categories mentioned above and get the use of specific plants such as under, Drug, the analgesic plant uses. It also contains a list of the tribes as well as their native regions which includes tribes from the U.S. (Alaska & Hawaii too), Canada, Greenland and some of Mexico (Northern). There is also an index of usages that is very handy. Each usage category will have an alphabetical list of plant genera followed by the tribe name(s) that used these genera. If you have any interest in Native American Ethnobotany then this book is of value and I highly recommend it for Native Americans, botanists, foragers and others interested in the disappearing knowledge of these amazing cultures.

Wonderful book, it is more of a information guide, It doesnt give ways to identify each species, but other plant books can be used for such information. It is what it is, an informational book, like a dictionary that says what plants were used for what purposes by what tribes. If you are looking for plant information, like where it grows, when it blooms, how tall they get, this is not that book.

This book is a bible for me when I go to my cottage in the Pennsylvania mountains and learn about nature. I naturally dye silk so there is information in there for that too.

This is the ultimate book on Native American Ethnobotany - that many other books are written from. We felt is was an essential part of our research library and are excited that it is finally on our shelf and available to the general public. We are also using it to create interpretations for our Natural History exhibit and for our Lewis & Clark Garden, which is planted out in front of our historical Museum. We highly reccommend this book to anyone interested in the historical information of plant usage by Native Americans and are so grateful to the author for collecting this extensive amount of valuable information before it was lost.

Probably a good book but no pictures. You'll need other books to reference plants mentioned

Dictionary, very well written but no pics of plants to use for identification. So buy other books with this to identify plants. Then cross reference for the uses.

This text is an excellent resource to start ethnobotanical research. It is an encyclopedia, meaning it focuses on breadth rather than depth. I know of no other text that is more complete regarding ethnobotany in North America. When paired with other sources with greater depth, this book is an excellent tool.

""Lewis was one of those high-powered, controversial and prophetic figures to whom no one can react with indifference. He was a fellow-traveller with fascism who wrote enthusiastically about Hitler . . . A toughy, you see: a would-be shocker: a braggart. But his eye for the comic surface of things is marvelous.""—Philip Toynbee, The Observer ""The most fascinating personality of our time.""—T.S. Eliot

Book Description

After his controversial 1931 essay praising Hitler, he later disowned Lewis, a groundbreaking abstract artist and founder of "Vorticism," escaped to Morocco to travel the country. The result was a classic of travel writing and a portrait of Morocco on the edge of the modern and ancient world.

A classic, there is nothing more to say about this book. True, there are today better books on Crystals out, as the art has developed over the years and Scott Cunningham has passed a while ago before those books came on the market. But still, it is the only book that doesn't talk of gems in terms of their healing potential, but rather their use for magick.

I love this book . It's one I use weekly . I have his whole collection and this is probably one of my favorite books I own .

I had this book, but it disappeared in a move. I thought I had moved on, until I saw mention of it in a jewelry description by one of my favorite instructors. I knew I needed it back. Ordered it, love it still. I own quite a few books on the metaphysical uses of crystals, yet this is still a "must go to" resource. It is timeless. We lost Scott Cunningham years ago, but his work is still unequaled and essential.

This book give the reader a great reference source to many common crystals, gems and metals. Each stone/metal is given a listing in addition to chapters on Stone energies, cleansing, obtaining stones and much more. The last part of the book gives invaluable tables regarding Intentions, Elemental Rulers, Planetary Rulers and energies.

If you have other books of Cunningham’s work then you do not need this book. It is repetitive of his other books just outlined in a different arrangement. If you do not have his other books then this would be good information for you.

The best layed out book on Gems etc I've ever read. I've got 9 books on the subject...so way more expensive and the way this book was formatted ...especially the quick references at the end was the best I've seen. I was so impressed; this is the book ive been looking for. HIGHLY RECOMMEND

What Kindle Readers Want to Know:There is no Active Table of Contents. You can click through chapters but you must hit the next page button to see the chapter. Other than those two issues, the book is formatted well and easy to read. But I deduct one star for the lack of TOC and the high price. What Readers Want to Know:I have owned this book for over 20 years and have loved it. Scott's personal take on the crystals is timeless, touching and tantalizing. His descriptions and histories make you want to own the beautiful stones and metals within this encyclopedia. Perhaps, there is a resurgence in crystal lore thanks in part to the show Steven Universe whose main cast are personified gems. The main section deals with the stones like quartz, agate, mica and emeralds. These articles give you the basics like element, planet, and zodiac sign etc. followed by Scott's explanation of physical and magical properties. What makes this book so special is it's many chapters on stone history and applications like stone spells and stone tarot. Besides the crystals and minerals, there is a chapter on magical metals like Tin, Gold, Antimony and Cooper. My favorite articles are on the stones Pipestone, Lepidolite, Oliivine, and Kunzite. I have bought many (maybe too many) books on crystal lore and magic and none are better than this one!

I can't say enough about this book. Cunningham has a wonderful simple style of writing and let's you know this is just his way..dont be afraid to add what works for you. Great book. Fast shipping

This was great find. the games are excellent! There is something for everyone in this book. I would reccomend it to any music or drama teacher who needs ideas for class. And I would even recommend this to regular classroom teachers for use. It also came very quickly through mail. Thanks!

Love this

This book would be great for any activities director; I found that many are not quite what I am looking for for children's dance classes, and some are too lengthy to fit into a 45 minute class. But it definitely offers a wide variety of ideas for a range of ages.

I like it I use it for my kids dance class and got some good ideas. I would really like to have CDs with it I would have paid extra to have the suggested music with the book.

I failed to read the reviews about this book before I bought it. I did, however, preview some of the pages and thought the games that I saw were good, so I went ahead and purchased it. After receiving the book and reveiwing its contect I realized it was a waste of my money. The majority of the games have no substance and are rather silly. It seems like the author of this book was given a week to complete this project and just threw a bunch of silly activites together and called them dance games. I was very disappointed and would not recommend buying this book.

This is a very superficial activity book. Not only are the activities in it not very engaging, but most of the descriptions are very poorly worded. This is at best a guide for those dear people who think "dance" is for an elite class of people. You would be better off just teaching P.E. if this is what you consider creative. Better by far is a book called "First Steps in Teaching Creative Dance to Children" by Mary Joyce.Don't waste your money on this!

This book's activities are poorly described as well as being just plain corny. I cannot imagine the children I work with wanting to jump in and do these excersizes. Even in the spirit of pure play, I find these activities boring and silly (and not silly in a good way). If the activities had more depth, I could then use them to open up into a discussion or exploration. However, with the exception of a few, their relevance was insignificant. I cant see how any of these activities would break down walls, establish trust, inspire children to create, or even bring up a subject worth exploring, etc.

I And Thou, by Martin Buber

Amazon.com Review

I and Thou, Martin Buber's classic philosophical work, is among the 20th century's foundational documents of religious ethics. "The close association of the relation to God with the relation to one's fellow-men ... is my most essential concern," Buber explains in the Afterword. Before discussing that relationship, in the book's final chapter, Buber explains at length the range and ramifications of the ways people treat one another, and the ways they bear themselves in the natural world. "One should beware altogether of understanding the conversation with God ... as something that occurs merely apart from or above the everyday," Buber explains. "God's address to man penetrates the events in all our lives and all the events in the world around us, everything biographical and everything historical, and turns it into instruction, into demands for you and me." Throughout I and Thou, Buber argues for an ethic that does not use other people (or books, or trees, or God), and does not consider them objects of one's own personal experience. Instead, Buber writes, we must learn to consider everything around us as "You" speaking to "me," and requiring a response. Buber's dense arguments can be rough going at times, but Walter Kaufmann's definitive 1970 translation contains hundreds of helpful footnotes providing Buber's own explanations of the book's most difficult passages. --Michael Joseph Gross

As an existential, Jewish philosopher, Buber takes the seriousness of the ‘eternal Thou.’ Only through the ‘Thou’ can a person be an ‘I.’ In other words, the ‘supreme meeting’ in the pure relation of I-Thou, which demands the whole person, is a revelation that completely changes the person. However, in the aftermath, the contemptuous habit of the person is to warp the ‘Thou’ into an ‘It’–understandable, manageable, and conquerable. Buber likens this deplorable act as replacing God for an idol. So, what can be done? Buber exhorts two exercises: (1) treat the world and others as ‘Thou’ than ‘It” and (2) prayer. With a sacramental view, Buber affirms that the world and everything in it are ‘Thou’ pointing to the ‘eternal Thou.’ If we cannot treat worldly ‘Thou’ rightly, how can we possibly respect the ‘eternal Thou’? Next, prayer is accepting the meeting with a ‘Thou,’ which climactically breaks the I-It cycle.cf. [...]

This book is a beautiful, inspired work of art by a brilliant young man. It elucidates the subjective/objective dichotomy in human experience better than anyone before or since. As Kaufman notes, Buber has impressive antecedents including Jesus, Hillel and Kant, but this work elaborates upon the aphorisms of those earlier thinkers, making their insights fresh and more complete. Beware that Buber tends to drift off into romantic, idiosyncratic gibberish at times, especially in Part 2. So, don't expect to be able to grasp everything that he says. Still, there are many profound truths in this small volume. Respecting the subjective view of each human being does not mean that ethical behavior or truth is subjective. There is a place for objectivity. But, in relating to human beings, subjectivity must be acknowledged. ".... without It, a human being cannot live. But, whoever lives with only that is not human."

Buber's I AND THOU is one of the major examples of the modernist attempt to re-define or re-imagine the spiritual dimensions of reality. Walter Kaufmann's is the standard translation of a work that he himself admits is difficult to read or to translate. Despite these difficulties, this book is central for anyone interested in modern philosophy or spirituality. Kaufmann's introduction is thoughtful and helpful.

I love Martin Buber's language in describing relationships as either "I-Thou" or "I-It". I find this very helpful when working with groups to help them understand how subtle differences can quickly change the relationship and damage communications. While the concept is simple, the nuances and subtle issues in practice are certainly not and like all good human relations, requires a great deal of study, practice and more practice. With that in mind, this translation of the poetic original I-Thou by Buber needed more for me to understand and embrace it more fully. To that end, I found Kenneth Paul Kramer's "Martin Buber's I and Thou; Practicing Living Dialogue" to be a very good companion resource.

"I and Thou" by Martin Buber is one of the most important books ever written.First published in 1923, in my opinion, it is certainly the most important book of the 20th century. Over the course of decades, it affected religious and philosophical thinking throughout the Western world, and even in some Asian places.Buber shows how the relationships between people, between people and the world and between people and God are pivotal in how we see the world."To man the world is twofold, in accordance with his twofold attitude ...in accord with the twofold nature of the primary words he speaks ..."The one primary word is the combination I-Thou."The other primary word is the combination I-It ...," says Buber at the beginning of this work. This is much more complex than can be explained here, which is why you need to read this book of only 137 pages, including the postscript. In short, when we approach someone with the attitude of I-It, we see him or her as an object. This is the attitude we often take at work, and the attitude which allows us to exploit the world. When we approach someone with the attitude of I-Thou, we see him or her as the unique and existentially real person he or she really is at heart. We see that person's soul and can never treat him or her as an object in any way. This attitude is also the way we address the world when it seems magical, such as in moments when nature calls to us and we see it as part of ourselves and ourselves as a part of it.I-Thou is how we address God when our hearts and souls open to let the Infinite in, when the spirit of God touches us.In other words, I-Thou is when we are in true relation with anything, when the boundaries we set up between ourselves and the world come down.Unfortunately, since we live in a material world, there are times when we must address the world as I-It, which is where troubles begin.Buber was an Austrian-born Jewish philosopher who was a part of the Zionist movement as the editor of its central newspaper, but later became an advocate of a joint Palestinian-Jewish homeland to share what is Israel today.Since Buber wrote "I and Thou" in idiosyncratic German, with a highly poetic and metaphorical structure, there are differences in how some think it should be translated. Personally, I prefer the translation Buber worked on with Ronald Gregor Smith, because it retains its poetic and reverent tone, but the most available translation is a later translation by Walter Kaufmann. Readers may have to find used copies to find the Smith translation, as I did, get the Kindle edition or try the interlibrary loan system.Even if you've read this gem, it bears reading again. Different chapters of our lives can give it added meaning, which is why I read it every few years.Don't miss this one.
