Review

FROM PUBLISHERS WEEKLY The Latke family is celebrating the Festival of Lights. Yes, they're actual potato pancakes; no, they're not going to eat themselves (the menu calls for another traditional treat, jelly-filled donuts called sufganiyot). Grandpa Latke takes it upon himself to tell the story of "CHHA-nukah!" to Lucy Latke, but his narrative quickly goes off the rails: the heroes are yarmulke-wearing "mega-bees," not Maccabees; their enemy is "alien potatoes" instead of Antiochus; a dreidel is turned into a Trojan Horse; and the tongue twister "tattered tater tyrants" makes a totally gratuitous appearance. Thank goodness the family dog, Applesauce (also a latke), is on hand to set the story straight. Readers who like their humor broad and goofy will lap this up, and Silberberg (Pond Scum) makes it extra tasty with sprawling and genially messy cartooning that looks like it was created by someone hopped up on chocolate gelt.

There has long been an inequity in holiday books for children: Christmas has all the classics (think of the Grinch, the Night Before Christmas, Rudolph, etc.). But where's the classic Hannuka book? The one that kids pull out year after year when the season turns colder, the one that they look forward to reading to their own kids? There just hasn't been such a book, until now. Alan Silberberg, a writer for kids' TV and the author of several excellent books for adolescents, has written his first picture book, and it's a totally bonkers retelling of the story of Hannuka (also known as Channuka, as the characters explain with some irritation). The book works on several levels. On the surface, Silberberg offers the story of a family of fried potato pancakes (The Latkes), preparing for the first night of the holiday by listening to Grandpa tell the story of Hannuka. Somehow this version involves giant warrior bees (Judah and the Mega-Bees, of course), multi-eyed laser-shooting alien potatoes, and sullen teenagers. But at the same time (with the helpful assistance of a talking dog who is somehow also a potato pancake), Silberberg manages to convey the actual biblical story, complete with a helpful glossary in the back. Tying it all together are Silberberg's illustrations, which are adorable and unhinged. As a Jewish kid exposed to way too many Christmas specials on TV when I was growing up, I could have used a book like this to cement my own understanding of Hannuka and also to remind me that the holiday is cool! Now I have it, my kids have it, and their kids will have it too. This has the makings of a classic.

Super cute book. I bought this for my 2 and 4 year olds. I honestly think that this is probably more suited for 5 and older. It’s a funny story where grandpa is having a difficult time correctly recollecting the story of Hanukkah. The dog apple sauce continuously chimes in to tell the kids the correct information. So you are reading two story’s that alternate. You get grandpa’s silly story and the accurate story from apple sauce. This is why I feel that 4 and under might not be the age group for the book. It is a bit more difficult for them to come away with the story of Hanukkah. We are reading this with them but we also have two other books that have a more straight forward simple version of Hanukkah. All in all I’m glad we got this and I’m sure next year my oldest will understand the jokes even more.

This new picture book humorously and perfectly relates the tale of Chanukah, somewhat mangled by Grandpa but corrected by the dog, Applesauce. And of course all the members of the family are latkes! A delightful retelling of Chanukah, perfect for preschoolers as well as school-age children. My grandchildren, 3 and 5, love it! As do I!

This book was a pure joy to read! My children, ages three and five, as well as the near 40 year old in me loved the story, artwork and learned a little too! As a PTA dad and a parent of an autistic child this book was a book that children have asked to re-read multiple times a day and subsequently we were the parents who were asked to share and read it with classmates and friends. I highly recommend buying this book and sharing it with others, regardless of what holiday you will be celebrating this season. Author Alan Silberberg has scored big with this one!

This book is wonderful! We bought it to have for our grandson (and future grandchildren) this year for Hanukkah and it was a hit! He must have read it 10 times over the weekend. It is well written, illustrated and very funny. I hope the author does one for Passover!!

Love it! Adorable and actually tells the story of Hanukkah which is hard to find!!!

I won this book through a Twitter Giveaway (if you are a teacher and have not found the wonderful-ness that is Twitter and book giveaways, please message me!) and I decided to include it in our Lit Review Crew. It is a new book, just released in October, and comes at a perfect time. It is a hilarious story of Hanukkah with enough humor to make it entertaining, but not too much so that it takes away from the seriousness of this holiday. I believe that those who celebrate Hanukkah would enjoy reading this story with the silly grandpa and moody teenager. Also, those that are not familiar with Hanukkah would learn about it in an entertaining format.3 Things I Loved About Meet the LatkesThey are potato cakes! The quirky grandpaMix of humor and seriousnessI definitely look forward to reading more about the Latkes!

This may be a better Hanukkah book than we deserve right now: it is clever, lively, whimsical, and engaging. Since receiving my copy about 2 weeks ago, I have read it approximately twenty times with my two-year-old. His older brother, who knows the story of Hanukkah quite well, often happens along and enjoys the book too. Kids love it when adults get things "wrong," and this wacky, counterfactual, comic-book inflected retelling of the Hanukkah story is a great chance for kids to set the record straight--in cahoots of course with the Latke family's dog, Applesauce, who also knows the score. For adults bored of reading yet another straightforward presentation of the oil and the candles and the dreidels and the Maccabees, Silberberg's text is delightfully meta: as much as another retelling of the Hanukkah story, "Meet the Latkes" is a deceptively simple meditation on HOW we tell our stories and transmit Jewish heritage to our children.

This book has been eye-opening for me, as has the author's perspective on taking life head-on. Whereas most books on personal growth and leadership fail to inspire, and most books on inspiration and motivation fail to relate to realties we all face such as fear and personal challenges, for which platitudes do not provide the solution, Eyes Wide Open delivers on both accounts.Through personal stories of major sagas in his life, smart reflection and some deconstruction of reality as we see it, Isaac Lidsky provides us with a life philosophy based on full awareness, total accountability and practical problem solving and self-ingenuity. He not only lends us solid perspective but also many actionable ways to overcome obstacles and thrive no matter the circumstances.Frankly, I was moved by the book, and plan to recommend it often. It was enriching; time well spent.

I read Eyes Wide Open in preparation for an interview with Isaac Lidsky on my podcast. I was very impressed with what I came away with from both these experiences and the way he outlines his philosophy.Perception is never a passive process to take in the objective truth of the reality around you. In every moment, you are making educated guesses to construct an internal, conceptual understanding of the world. You frequently mistake this conception for the genuine article. You take this for granted. In his book, we learn how Isaac Lidsky went from being a successful teenage actor on TV to losing his sight and learning to reassess every unconscious assumption he had about life as a result. Isaac contends that going blind the way that he did is one of the best things that ever could have happened to him, as he learned to see his life beyond the illusions of his mind that would have kept him a prisoner of bad luck and circumstance. As Isaac began to lose his sight gradually over the course of more than a decade, he gained uncommon insight into the layers of meaning his mind automatically added to his perception. As micro blind spots formed in his vision, his brain would do everything it could to immediately compensate for them, often with wildly inaccurate guesses (such as perceiving a urinal as a sink in a bathroom). The mind is always attempting to sort incoming stimuli into the categories it knows. When the old categories we carry are not adequate for new types of information, we run into conflict with reality. We cease to be able to communicate with each other. We make terrible choices about what to do with our lives because we cannot align our actions with what is real. As Isaac had to learn how to reinterpret his most fundamental perceptions of the world, he took less and less for granted about the way his mind worked. For that reason, he is thankful for the new outlook being blind gave him.Highly recommended for a very visible example of how the mind can change the experience of reality.

An inspired book, easy to read with touching life stories. Mr. Lidsky is an excellent wordsmith. His chapter relating life to business was special to me. Assets, liabilities, balance sheet, income, expense all have their corollaries with life and he explains it well. I appreciated his thoughts on listening as it relates to hearing. Blind people don't hear better, they listen better and that is something that we should all practice.

Isaac lives life without boundaries. For a glimpse of this Amazing Individual Google his Ted Talk . He is a father of four including triplets, a husband, a motivational speaker, a lawyer, and business owner. and The book Eyes Wide Open is the real life story of a boy discovering he has a retina disease that in the future will cause blindness. The story of determination , acceptance self awareness and the overcoming obstacles. The journey begins in Miami, has stops in Hollywood, Harvard to study Math and computer science and also receive a law degree. Isaac then clerks for the Supreme Court. A great read.

Very enlightening, thoughtful, and powerful book. I learned a great deal from it. Certainly much food for thought about how to live your life. I love the author’s passion and bluntness, his stories and honesty. A few chapters do feel a little too extensive in terms of analogies and stories and that’s the only reason I have this book 4 stars. This is a must read.

I have a close friend who is blind from birth and has always lived life large. I love him! Well when I heard Mr. Lidsky on Ted Talk I was so surprised that he views himself as blessed by his blindness even while he had experienced vision for many years. Anyway, I enjoyed reading about his life and it has inspired me to try hard to be a better listener!

We read this on trips, unusual, thought provoking material.

I'm very excited to read this, having watched him on TV and on YouTube.

Amazon.com Review

Piloting his 747, Rayford Steele is musing about his wife Irene's irritating religiosity and contemplating the charms of his "drop-dead gorgeous" flight attendant, Hattie. First Irene was into Amway, then Tupperware, and now it's the Rapture of the Saints--the scary last story in the Bible in which Christians are swept to heaven and unbelievers are left behind to endure the Antichrist's Tribulation. Steele believes he'll put the plane on autopilot and go visit Hattie. But Hattie's in a panic: some of the passengers have disappeared! The Rapture has happened, abruptly driverless cars are crashing all over, and the slick, sinister Romanian Nicolae Carpathia plans to use the UN to establish one world government and religion. Resembling "a young Robert Redford" and silver-tongued in nine languages, Carpathia is named People's "Sexiest Man Alive." (This reviewer, a former People writer, finds this plot twist plausible.) Meanwhile, Steele teams up with Buck Williams, a buck-the-system newshound, to form the Tribulation Force, an underground of left-behind penitents battling the Antichrist. Ex-presidential candidate Pat Robertson briefly outsold Michael Crichton with his apocalypse novel The End of the Age (now available on audiocassette), and the similar The Third Millennium sells well, but the Left Behind series is the absolute champion in the race to make the Book of Revelation into racy thriller reading. --Tim Appelo

From Library Journal

On a flight from Chicago to London, several passengers aboard Capt. Rayford Steele's plane suddenly and mysteriously disappear. When Steele radios to London to report the situation, he discovers that the incident on his plane is not an isolated phenomenon but a worldwide occurrence. As Steele begins his search for answers, he learns that the Christ has come to take the faithful with Him in preparation for the coming apocalyptic battle between good and evil and that those who have been left behind must face seven dark and chaotic years in which they must decide to join the forces of Christ or the forces of Anti-Christ. Jenkins, writer-in-residence at Moody Press, and LaHaye (A Nation Without a Conscience, Tyndale, 1994) have written a gripping thriller that captures the anxiety and fear that interpretations of Revelation often inspire. I started reading these books starting with Left Behind in the shooting of 2001, and was saved by chapter 3. When I dropped to my knees and asked the Lord what must I do to be saved. I had not even heard of the word rapture ( in this sense) none less know what it meant. Thanks to this book I am saved. I am now reading them again for a refresher, one to get back to my first love the way it was when He first saved me, and because I just really enjoyed the books and want to read again, I had truly forgotten so much it is like reading for the 1st time. What a blessing. The only part that I don't like this time around is the inclination that the pope was raptured. The 1st time I read it I had no clue on, or about religions, this time I do and I don't want people having such a false hope as this. I know billions will disagree with me I this but you just can't sugar coat God's true word not to offend. I have to ask the question, do I offend and maybe help even one person from going to hell or do offend God, by leaving out his truths to appease the masses. I choose to offend the masses. Such a loving series of books. That I will be forever grateful for.

This kindle book is called "The Left Behind Collection", but it isn't a collection of 12 separate e-books. It is one very long book file that includes all 12 titles of the series from Left Behind through Glorious Appearing. (It does not include Kingdom Come, which is considered a "sequel".)To be clear, if you buy this you are getting one huge book file that contains all 12 titles, not 12 individual book files. So, it may seem rather odd that the Kindle progress bar will say something like 18% after you finish the whole first book. And, you can't chuck the prior books off your Kindle (or loan them out) as you move on, since it is all one file. Each title and every chapter in each title are marked and "go to"-able.There aren't any extras like whispersync for voice or xray.It says the title is lendable, but it can't be broken into parts, so whoever you lend it to will have to read all 12 books in 14 days.Still, if you've never read the books, or just want to read them again, this is an excellent value.

I have seen the three movies that are based on this book series. Left Behind, Left Behind: Tribulation Force, and Left Behind: World at War. The movies are great, but the books treat everything with a lot more detail and I am intending to read all 13 of the books. I just finished the second one and have ordered the third. It has been a long time since I have been so interested in the story that I almost can't put the books down. The writer's style is constantly compelling.

A vibrant view of what is coming to us all ... it's hard knowing the agony of the tribulation not to be afraid, but those who seek will find their faith. And those who find their faith, will find the glory of God and the heart of Christ. Thank you for this portrayal of the Book of Revelations. It's quite vivid and realistic, and so I pray we each find the truth of the gospel and refuge in our Lord and Saviour, our Redeemer Jesus the Christ.

Very well done. I tried not to read these books when my husband told me I really had to that they were so good and would explain the End Times of the Bible. But I thought I had the Bible itself. I didn't need these books. Well yes, I did. Even though I had read Revelations and the whole Bible and was rereading and studying, this book was a blessing, and I intend to read them all. Christians need to know where we came from, how Jesus came to earth and how he will return. Our job is to encourage one another in our walk with the Lord and to lead others to the truth. These books help us grow in the knowledge of what is coming. Great book.

I firmly believe the "Left Behind" series is a great work of fiction; great fan fiction, that is. It's actually second-generation fan fiction, if one considers "Revelation," a late addition to the Bible, first-generation fan fiction.I might have given the series five stars if there weren't any grammatical or factual errors. And I might have given it five stars if I was Christian, but I think when an atheist like me stands up and shouts to the world about how good these books are, four stars is a reasonable rating. The individual sub-plots move along at a nice pace, similar to John Grisham's and Tom Clancy's writing. And there are plenty of cliff-hangers. One of the great things about this collection is that one need not slow down for a moment to continue to the next book; a few extra swipes and the story keeps moving along. While I found some of the biblical passages repetitious and tedious (after all, I'm atheist), I also found LaHaye's explanations of how Old and New Testament passages can be tied together to explain "Revelation" regardless of how much editing the Bible had over the centuries.

This was an amazing series! So many times I've wondered what the end times would be like and although I've read Revelations and other prophecies from the Bible, to have it narrated in such a way as to make me feel like I was living it as I read... incredible. I have to say, the Glorious Appearing (last book) was truly anointed by God. Just reading it and imagining that Jesus was speaking directly to me as he was to the characters in the book...you can put yourself there in your mind and experience what the characters heard/saw. There will always be skeptics and people who will read this and believe it's just a fictional story, but I have no doubt these scenarios will come to pass. I pray that people who read these novels are convicted in their hearts and spirits and will come closer to the Lord because of it. Either way, the stories were riveting. There were times when I sort of skimmed a couple of paragraphs because they were a little too wordy for me, but overall, AWESOME! Plus, realize these books were written in the late 90s/early 2000s - any of the scenarios look/sound familiar like they're happening today...? Food for thought.

Really enjoying the read. I am impressed at how the author has woven 'real' life into a biblical teaching. Easy to follow along the paths of the characters and the biblical references also.

If you're not a USC or Seahawks fan, I think it's very easy to see Pete Carroll as an antagonist. But as someone with little skin the game of college or pro football, I was intrigued by the success that he has enjoyed given the freedom that he allows his players to have. I probably view this dynamic quite simplistically, but this juxtaposition does seem counterintuitive to traditional coaching. I bought Win Forever to understand what Carroll is about... and I was pleasantly surprised to read about the thoughtfulness of his philosophy towards his players. To hear him name-drop Abraham Maslow was kind of cool, and to understand how deliberately he creates a learning environment is very interesting and unique. I think many people would be surprised to read how Carroll's philosophy developed and how successful he's been. Note that it seems that he wrote this the year after he transitioned to the Seahawks, so there's no Super Bowl insights or recap although there is mention of Marshawn Lynch's "Beast Mode" run.A couple of negative aspects to this book: Number one, a cynic might see that this book was co-written and wonder how much of the philosophical nuggets are "introduced" into the story. As a certified cynic, this thought occurred to me a few times but I decided that I enjoy the story and the philosophy so much that I "buy in" (so to speak) to the story in its entirety. I also found it off-putting how many football people he mentions in the book - you may find yourself checking Wikipedia to find out who "Rocky Seto" is, only to find that there may not be a value to knowing that outside of the context of one or two sentences in this book. It's a very minor criticism, though. All in all, I really enjoyed this book and I would recommend it to anyone who enjoys reading about leadership, team-building, or of course football.

"The process of self-discovery that was necessary to formulate my vision, and the power of having a philosophy has given me a confidence I didn't have before. One of the keys to success lies in knowing and believing in yourself. When you are confident and you trust in who you are, you can perform to the best of your ability, and that is exactly what I plan to do. Whether you are coaching the USC Trojans or the Seattle Seahawks, working at your job or running a household, all you should ever strive for is to be the best you can be . . . and that is the essence of what it means to Win Forever." ~ Pete Carroll from Win ForeverPete Carroll. Super Bowl-winning coach of the Seattle Seahawks. Super inspiring guy.Pete wrote this book after an incredibly successful decade coaching the USC Trojans and right before he started coaching the Seahawks--a team that had won 9 games in the 2 seasons before he showed up. He basically called his shot--quickly turning the team around and winning a Super Bowl after a few seasons. That's remarkable. This book captures the essence of his philosophy: To Win Forever by Always Competing. It's an inspiring semi-autobiographical look at his journey in life and in football to craft the philosophy that now guides his success on and off the field. If you're into sports, you'll definitely love it. Even if you're not, it's a great read packed with goodness.I'm excited to share a handful of my favorite Big Ideas:1. Coach Maslow - On the football field.2. A Winning Philosophy - What's yours?3. Oops. Fired Again. - But only 5 times.4. Win Forever. - The philosophy arrives.5. Practice Is Everything - Period. To find 250+ more reviews visit http://bit.ly/BrianReviews

While Pete Carroll might get mixed reviews due to the Reggie Bush scandal, he was the man responsible for the glory days of the early 2000's at USC. NCAA screwed him and the team because they were college football darlings for players and fans. Carroll's energy and positiveness is genuine which is so rare today in any form of team or company leader. A light read and just reinforces the positive perception of Carroll that exists.

I bought this book because it sounded like it would be inspirational for my son. I began reading it and when I got to page 31, I knew that I was going to keep the copy and order another to share. You can read page by page, or pick a chapter that sounds interesting. It is as enthusiastically written as watching Pete Carroll on the sidelines of any football game where he is coaching.I am not a fan of Univ. of So. CA….. but rather a fan of a rival…. UCLA…… That does not matter….. The man is a winner…. And he certainly is a motivator. And he has proved all the folks who said he could not coach in his manner in the NFL…. WRONG! It is a real joy to read. Hats off to a good piece of work.

The current success of the Seattle Seahawks will no doubt mean that this book will be widely read and it should be. It is interesting to learn Coach Carroll's philosophy and then to watch how he appears to apply his philosophy in his daily routine with his organization. Many members of the print and electronic media would do well to read this so that they won't ask so many of the same questions over and over, allowing them to get on to more interesting things. Sure, each reporter is trying to get his or her own personal quote from the Coach, but when six reporters at one news conference ask essentially the same question (which the Coach patiently answers the same way each time) their lack of background study is too obvious! The book reads like a talk, so it may be that it was dictated.

This is an excellent book. I find it very motivating and appreciate Coach Carroll's philosophy. There isn't much on the Seahawks days in this but I assume there will be another updated version. There is a good amount of information in this book but it isn't drawn out which I like. This is a great book to read regardless if you are a USC or Seahawks fan or even if you are not a football fan it's worth the read. His philosophy can apply to any business or aspect of life.

From School Library Journal

Gr 5-8–Beginning with a two-page time line spanning prehistory to 2009, this chronological survey of astronomy covers early observations and discoveries, concentrating on modern findings. Beautiful color photographs of space engage readers from the first page. Drawings and diagrams expand upon theories, and illustrations of Galileo, Newton, and William and Caroline Herschel put faces on these prominent scientists. Activities relevant to each chapter, are sprinkled throughout the book, such as making an astrolabe from string; creating a three-dimensional starscape to demonstrate the distances between the stars in a constellation; inflating a balloon covered with stickers representing stars to measure the changing distances in an expanding universe, and more. The three-page glossary provides short definitions of terms (e.g., “eclipse,” “dark matter,” etc.), and many of these terms are listed in the five-page index and take readers to specifics. For example, the observations and photographs of the 1919 total eclipse of the sun revealed the bending of light around the dark sun, thus validating Einstein's theory of relativity. The resources section lists astronomy websites, sky watching and star-chart sites, and books for further reading. This inviting and informative comprehensive survey will be useful for homework assignments and may send young scientists to further studies of astronomy.–Frances E. From Booklist

*Starred Review* With a vast subject and a lengthy time line, this book takes readers on a fast-paced but worthwhile tour of the history of astronomy, beginning with ancient stargazers and ending with the James Webb space telescope, scheduled for launch in 2018. Rather than skimming through centuries of discoveries, the discussion slows at times to consider certain pivotal ones in some detail. At these points, Carson shows unusual finesse in communicating the methods and significance of scientific breakthroughs. Whether describing how Galileo’s observations of Venus through a telescope proved the heliocentric model of the solar system or how Eddington’s photos of a star during a solar eclipse substantiated Einstein’s theory of relativity, the explanations are remarkably clear, vivid, and concise. The discussion gives full weight to women in the field, including Caroline Herschel, Annie Jump Cannon, and Jocelyn Bell Burnell. The many illustrations (most in color) include portraits and photos of astronomers and their equipment as well as images of stars and other space objects. Line drawings illustrate the 21 activities, which offer students opportunities to explore concepts in concrete ways. Notable for its unusually cogent explanations of complex topics, this volume is a worthy companion to Carson’s excellent Exploring the Solar System (2006). Grades 5-8. --Carolyn Phelan

My nephew loves this book! He carries it with him everywhere. I wish that it was available as a hardcover as it's all torn up now, although it doesn't keep him from looking and reading it. Highly recommend.

easy to follow, learn a lot, interesting.

My 12 year old Grandson is into the universe, black holes, etc. this book fits his interest nicely. Arrived on time and in good condition.

Very well done

My grandson enjoyed this birthday gift. Great photos and simple, yet fact-filled explanations.

Wonderful and easy to do activities for space studies. Homeschoolers will love it, but I use it in my classroom too.

nice

The author, Mary Kay Carson, has a number of successful books in her "For Kids" series. One very engaging volume is The Wright Brothers for Kids: How They Invented the Airplane, 21 Activities Exploring the Science and History of Flight (For Kids series). Another, which has some content in common with this new volume, is Exploring the Solar System: A History with 22 Activities (For Kids series). Both of those books are described as aimed at 9 year olds, or fourth graders. While the content can be challenging, that seems about right, especially given the subjects, (airplanes, planets), and the types of activities proposed, (build a kite or glider, map out planet orbits)."Beyond the Solar System" seems to me to be on a slightly different plane. We start with prehistoric views of the cosmos, move through the early Greeks, and then bring astronomy all the way up to the present with discussions of dark matter, dark energy, mapping of cosmic background microwave radiation, and the like. This is a huge undertaking, and in the effort to provide both breadth and depth the book vacillates between being overly simplified in some parts and fairly technical elsewhere. (For example, the second activity consists of using paper plates to construct a demonstration of Ptolemy's system of epicycles within deferents, which Ptolemy used to explain why the Earth was the center of the universe. This established the basis for Ptolemy's incorrect explanation for why Mars moves in retrograde. I could be wrong, but that seems a little beyond what most 9 year olds would want to make.) In that same impulse of inclusiveness, there is so much historical background that we are actually more than one-third of the way through the book before we even get to the 1900's.This is fine by me. The writing is generally clear, the sidebars are interesting and well chosen. Biographical sketches of major contributors to the field touch on not only the usual suspects, (Einstein, Hubble, and so on), but also lesser know yet equally fascinating players. Discovery timelines are also interesting, and illustrations of difficult points are generally well done.I guess the point is that this is not your usual Golden Book version of galaxies and black holes. This is a book with substantial and sometimes demanding content. For a kid with some background and demonstrated interest this could be a great choice. For a younger reader for whom you want an interesting introduction to astronomy, this might be daunting or even discouraging. This really doesn't strike me as a one-size-fits-all type of book, and you might just want to be aware of that. Please note that I received a free advance ecopy of this book in exchange for a candid review. Apart from that I have no connection at all to either the author or the publisher of this book.

This hefty tome weighing in at more than 850 pages is aimed squarely at the SharePoint power user. It is not an administrators aid and will not give you best practices or show you how to install and setup the system. It basically assumes that you already have a working SharePoint 2013 environment. It's really an end users manual, so if you think the "Inside Out" title would include everything you need to know about SharePoint 2013, you need to look elsewhere (actually multiple books as an all inclusive book would really be impracticable). So in saying that, if you are an end user/power user how good is this book and what all does it cover? The book is split into 22 chapters covering everything from basics of SharePoint structure and terms to setting up BDC connections, excel services and more. Depending on your IT department and your level of access in SharePoint, this book covers virtually everything you will need to know to create useful and powerful SharePoint sites. It's a fairly easy read for a technical book and you can use it as a reference to look back on certain subjects if you need reminding. There seems to be a mash of some chapters covering topics already covered in other chapters whilst in other places it refers you to a certain chapter for further information (this is probably just due to the book being written by multiple authors).Although the title of the book is inside out, it keeps things to a fairly high level and doesn't really delve that deeply into each subject, but there is more than enough information for an end user to get them up and running. If you have used a previous version of SharePoint (e.g. SharePoint 2010) then a lot of the information contained in this book you will already know and as such I'm not too sure how much value this book will be. The book does contain information that only SharePoint 2013 has (e.g. FAST search now being built directly into the product) and it does point out the differences between SharePoint Foundation and the full SharePoint Server so would be useful to either.I do wish that some chapters went into more detail than it does but if you are an end user/power user being tasked to create a departmental SharePoint site, document store etc. then this book should give you enough information to get your job done quickly and easily.Overall a good overview of SharePoint 2013 and its capabilities and enough to get users up and running with their SharePoint 2013 sites.Edit: I've upped my rating to 4 star considering this is actually a good book for its target audience.

The introduction starts with mentioning seven areas that the book will cover (page XIX), including three of my main interests: document and web content management, enterprise search and workflows that I will review here."Document collaboration has always been at the heart of what SharePoint provides" (page 12): Chapter 11, Managing Documents is 36 pages long and the term Enterprise Content Management (ECM) is not mentioned at all. Quick Parts is mentioned once but that is in Chapter 22, and with no information at all about all the issues you run into using Quick Parts for promotion/demotion of document properties. (Yes, I promise you that you will get a lot of issues in a serious application using Quick Parts.) There is no discussion of SharePoint document ID system and its limitations. (To be fair, neither has any other book that I have read.) In summary, the book has little information about how to set up SharePoint as a formal first class document management system; this is unfortunate since there are many surprises and issues to consider when using SharePoint as an Enterprise Content Management system. The search part of the book, Chapters 18 and 19 are well written but it is not an introduction how to use search from an users point of view. For that you have to read "SharePoint 2013 for Dummies". It is mentioned that SharePoint 2013 supports search on PDF documents; only one other SharePoint 2013 book I have read gives that little vital piece of information. Neither in this book nor in any other book I have read is mentioned why the search results don't show the title of Word documents (you will have to search on Internet about how to fix this issue). Isn't the title of the document (and author and the unique document ID) the basic information you would like to see when doing a document search in an Enterprise Content Management system? The book has a fair description of SharePoint Designer. It is mentioned twice that workflows can be connected to Content Types; however without the clarification that only SharePoint 2010 workflows can be connected to a Content Type, not the new SharePoint 2013 workflows, which you are supposed to use now. Further, in depth discussions are missing of approve workflow requirements and where SharePoint fails to support a correct formal approve process. (To be fair, neither has any other book that I have read.)The information about user groups and permission levels is weak, although the book has a solution of a tiny issue that I have been looking for a while that no other book I have read mentions. However, neither in this book or any other book I have read is mentioned the issue that you can't rename a document when you use Contribute - without delete permission levels, the permission level to be used in a regulated ECM system. The book has comparatively few practical examples how to solve things in its 871 numbered pages. If you are buying just one book to become a SharePoint super/power user, I recommend instead Beginning SharePoint 2013 - Building Business Solutions. But this book is still worth to have and read as the second power user book.Edit: You must have read at least "SharePoint 2013 for Dummies" before reading this book, otherwise you will be confused. I previously wrote that the XPS format is not supported but XPS is now supported since some cumulative update, unclear which one.

The information in the book seems OK. Sometimes if find the information a little light. There are some items that doesn't include enough information and because of that is a little misleading at times. I think this book is helpful for people that are comfortable with prior versions of SharePoint but because of the incomplete information I feel it has the potential to confuse beginners.

This is a comprehensive book about Sharepoint 2013 although I think some of the comments and material actually apply to a previous version. This is somewhat of an issue because there have been some important changes to Sharepoint between 2013 and previous versions.

Great content for intermediate and advanced users. There's a lot of information packed in here! Unfortunately, the graphics were awful - images are tiny, nearly impossible to decipher, as was the text. Big thumbs down to Microsoft Press for the crappy print.

As promised

Very comprehensive guidance for planning your SharePoint implementation. This book proposes lots of very pertinent questions that you really need answered to ensure that issues get dealt with in the planning phase when it is easier and cheaper to address and not in the post-implementation phase.

This is a really good book for through coverage of SharePoint 2013 from the perspective of everyday user. Great place to start your research and understanding into current version of SharePoint.

great price, book exactly as described, would order from seller again

I've been waiting on this one to come out and I wasn't disappointed! In this wonderful book the author encourages the reader to declutter and organize your home leaving only those things you truly need and love. But the book is not just about getting rid of stuff....it's about having a more relaxed and fulfilling life as a result of it. She writes about a morning routine, the domino effect, creating order and enjoying luxury aka having empty drawers and more cabinet space. If you have "stuff" everywhere and feel totally overwhelmed by it, then this is the book for you!

As always Melissa Michaels tells you how to find peace and joy in your homeBy getting rid of clutter you can truly obtain that in your home.I love reading her booksIt's now a how toIt's a girl friend telling you what you need to hear when you need to hear itDefinite must reach

My first thought is that Melissa writes in a way that I feel she is talking directly to me! I have her book Love The Home You Have and it helped me improve the look and feel of my home so much. I even got comments on how much better it looks! This new book has charged me up to a whole new level. I am so bad about holding on to things that I really don't need. Examples-I remember who gave this to me, I remember how much this cost, I might need this some day. For some reason reading this book has unleashed a purging binge for me. Through Melissa's writing I feel it's finally time and OK to just let stuff go. I've tried other methods before, but this is the one that is really working for me!

I have all of Melissa Michaels. This is a good book on its own but it repeats what was said in some of her previous books. She has some good organizing ideas which I already know. But, that doesn't mean I have used them & it's good to be reminded of what can be done. As time goes by organizing needs change. It's nice to have a refresher. For the reviews that say she is just a repeat of the fly lady, this is not true. She adds warmth & heart to her books. She is very gifted. and, I love the coloring book!

Great book! What makes this book different from other organizing books I've read is the focus on changing your thought process and mindset toward 'stuff' altogether. Not just a how-to-clean-out-your-stuff plan, but also how keep it that way. It gets at the source of the matter, which is the keep to sustaining any change! I love love love it and catch myself having 'Melissa' thoughts when deciding whether to get rid of something or purchase something.

This is more than just an organizational book. It's like a best friend helping you to sort and declutter and laugh with you over then stuff...er...junk you've kept over the years as well as cry at letting go of something beautiful that just doesn't work any more! Doing all of that with grace and gentleness so that you don't feel defeated by the process....that's what Melissa Michaels does in this book! Thank you West Coast friend! From your Southside Virginia friend ;)

When starting a clean up/declutter in my house, I always like to read a corresponding book. It helps reinforce what I am doing. There really was nothing new in this book. But like I said, it did reinforce what I was accomplishing. The last couple of chapters get all spiritual and I skipped them. But overall, mission accomplished.

I think I've read every book out there re: de-cluttering and organizing. Getting rid of excess STUFF.This book is one of the best. Melissa writes in a way that doesn't stress you out but gives you concreteplans of action in a loving, calm way. This book helped me start the process of simplifying my life, andit all starts with your home. You can't have a clear head/mind for anything else until you start at home.It also prompted me to find a local de-clutter expert, who has become a good trusted friend now. The peoplethat do this kind of work are indeed life-changing angels and Melissa is a great start to your new life!
