From the Author

Dear NICU Family and Friends, After giving birth at the hospital, I never expected to be driving with an empty car seat while following an ambulance to the closest NICU for my newborn to get lifesaving treatment. Despite her being a full-term baby with an easy delivery, this is what happened when our second daughter, Aura, was born. Right away, our world shrank, and our measurement of time was centered around updated lab tests every four hours. Just hours earlier I was holding her close in my arms. Now, I found myself in the NICU, my baby in an incubator with wires everywhere. All I could do was stroke her cheek and sing to her. I slept in the pump-room adjacent to the NICU for four days just to be near Aura. I continued to pump breast milk for when she would be able to nurse. Fortunately, five days later, Aura was discharged with a clean bill of health. Although we were at the NICU a relatively short amount of time, that experience profoundly changed our lives. I was able to get to know the doctors and nurses on a personal and very vulnerable level. When they found out I was a family therapist and the author of the Under the Tree children's book series, they asked for my help in fulfilling a need. They asked me to write a book to benefit siblings and families who were not prepared for the NICU. I took their request seriously and personally. As a result, Waiting for Emma: A Brother's Story (For Siblings and Families with Babies in the NICU) was created for families just like yours. With this story, I wanted to remind all readers about the virtues of waiting. When I was in the NICU, I couldn't yet grasp that this painful experience would someday be far behind our family. Waiting for Emma is filled with resources, gentle support, and hope. Today, Aura is one of the happiest and most delightful of children. May this book bring a sense of connection and understanding, and a new perception of time for you and your family. When you are better supported, your baby will be, too. May love and healing be with you. Danielle LeiboviciÂ

This book has become our daughter's go to book ever since our son spent 20 days in the NICU. Our daughter is 3 so we don't read every word but the pictures are very real looking and it's been an amazing tool to help her express her feelings and concerns.

My 2 and 4 year old enjoy this book and it does a good job of helping siblings to process the experience of having a baby brother or sister in the NICU. I was originally disappointed to see how much text there was on each page, thinking it'd be too much for my 2 year old to sit through. However, he sits and listens to the entire book each time we read it, so the length didn't end up being an issue.

Lovingly written and beautifully illustrated, this book is a valuable resource for families experiencing life in the NICU. Parents and children learn about the NICU through the eyes of young Adam, whose sister was born premature. The book explores the many emotions that family members go through when a baby is born too soon. The illustrations provide detailed, accurate scenes that will help parents explain the NICU to their older children. The book also includes information about the author's personal experiences in the NICU, tips for parents, and further discussion questions for parents and caregivers. A detailed, thorough resource for families and educators.

With this special book, Danielle Leibovici is campaigning for NICU siblings and family members across the country and around the globe. It is very apparent that much research, dedication and love went into making this book so valuable for families. As the author is a family therapist and former NICU parent herself, the story succeeds in encompassing the kind of reality a NICU baby’s impact has on all family members, siblings and parents included. I was especially moved by one of the beautiful illustrations that captured the first impression of Adam, the older brother, when he sees his baby sister in the NICU for the first time. The attention to detail in these illustrations (like in the NICU itself), is incredible and the story's message on the virtues of waiting is to be cherished by all. There is also wonderful, educational and useful information and activities for everyone in the family to do together. As a whole, this book’s message is to validate, strengthen and unify the family unit in what is likely a challenging time while their little one is cared for in the NICU.

Danielle Leibovici has written a tremendously important book not only for families who are going through (or have gone through) the NICU experience, but for those of us who know others who have. It is a book that covers a difficult reality with candor, emotional intelligence, courage, and truthfulness, all approaches to admire when dealing with any subject around children--not least of which the difficult ones. The illustrations compliment the thoughtfulness of the story's perspective and message. This book will help open a conversation that is much needed by families who find themselves in a most vulnerable time. Thank you Ms. Leibovici for all of your books, and the thoughtful manner in which you make mature subjects accesible to children in a manner that respects their truth and personhood.

A much needed story to help ease the roller coaster of emotions that families experience with birth of a baby requiring Neonatal ICU care. Waiting for Emma: A Brother's Story surpasses all my expectations as a NICU RN that has cared for countless NICU families. The illustrations could not be more realistic and the story really takes into account the wide range of feelings that both parents and siblings experience while their son/daughter/brother/sister is in the NICU. I especially like the support questions and suggestions for sibiling involovement. Congratulations Danielle Leibocivi and well done!

An absolutely stellar addition to the literary world. Every NICU should have a copy to share.
