Heaven and death are confusing topics for children. My twin 5 year olds know that we had a cat that died before they were born. They see pictures which inevitably leads to questions about death. “Oh,†I thought, “I have the answers. I'm an Elementary School and Sunday School teacher.†Boy, was I wrong. To little ears my answers about heaven were too abstract and foreign. Then I showed them Piggy in Heaven.Piggy in Heaven is a heartwarming tale that helps to broach the subject of death. The story of a guinea pig, Piggy, waking up in the sweet grasses of heaven is a comforting setting for children. He is welcomed by other piggies who share what life is like in heaven. They are joy-filled critters who soon become good friends. When Piggy asks some harder questions, they answer simply and give him comfort. Piggy is able to experience the delights of heaven because he knows that he is being watched over. He scampers about, rolls around in the grass, and munches away to his heart's content all because he is in heaven. There is a quiet joy about this story. As I thumbed through, I knew this story could express ideas my five year olds would understand. They have not experienced the loss of someone close, but they are willing to talk about heaven. This story has eased a few fears and given a visual of heaven to my children. Piggy in Heaven is a perfect match for preschoolers through 1st grade. And let me tell you, the cuteness factor of these little guinea pigs has filled our hearts.Paraclete Press is providing me a copy of this book as an incentive for an honest review
“Piggy in Heavenâ€, sweetly written by Melinda Johnson and adorably illustrated by Soraya Bartolomé, will bring comfort to readers young and old after the loss of a furry family member. Losing a pet is always difficult, especially for children to understand. What happens to your beloved friend after they die? What happens to ANY of us after we die? We may not have a definitive answer, but that is what faith is all about. This delightful tale of Piggy on his first day in heaven will reassure children that their furry friend is not only okay, but in a wonderful place! The grass and daisies are plentiful and delicious, any past pain or sickness is gone, there are no need for cages, and someday they will be reunited with their most favorite special people. Johnson’s charming writing put a smile on my face and in my heart. I could just picture those sweet guinea pigs jumping around like happy popcorn! Our family is currently the happy owners of several small animals and, as is the circle of life, someday they will pass. I know we will read this book when that happens, and it will bring us a smile amidst our grief.
This is a sweet story about a guinea pig who just realizes that he is in heaven. It goes through what he sees and feels. Any child who has lost a beloved pet wonders what happened to them and if they are okay. This story beautifully illustrates how happy the guinea pig is in his new home and that he thinks about his humans. It made me smile when I thought about my guinea pig that I had many years ago.
This is a wonderful new book for children trying to process the death of their Guinea pig or other pet. I have many books to help children understand death and the death of a pet but this is the first I have seen that focuses on a small mammal. It is bright and optimistic about our small friend as he passes on. This fills a gap in our school library collection. Highly recommend.
What a lovely story, and very helpful for helping someone healing from the death of a beloved pet! Although I am an adult, I have always identified and learned much from children's literature, and this is no exception. "Piggy" is a guinea pig who wakes up in a beautiful new place with lots of tasty grass and tastier daisies. He makes some new friends and delights in his new surroundings. The mysteries of the afterlife (even more mysterious where our pets are involved) seem less perplexing after reading this. I definitely recommend this book.
This book offers the sweet hope of a reunion for a child with their beloved pet. It presents that which we do know in a simple fashion. God is good! He loves and cares for His creation both now and forever. Death is both certain and instantaneous for all creatures here on Earth, but it is not something to fear. Even more, it isn't an isolating experience. Piggy wasn't alone after he died. He develops a relationship with the other characters in heaven.I found comfort in the story, and I know it is one I'll be reaching for often as my children grow. Even now, it has engaged the attention of my almost 3 year old with its simple language, silly character names, and fun piggy sounds.
An excellent book for teaching children how to cope with the loss of a pet, or any loved one really. Without trying to explain complexities, it lets young readers know the pets are perfectly fine. Someday, they might even see their beloved pets again.
What a delightful, endearing book that will come alongside a child grieving the loss of their pet and give comfort. I wish I'd had this when I was little, burying hamsters and gerbils in checkbook boxes in the garden with endless tears.
