This is a beautiful book, gives a lot of fascinating history, and is a must to have if you are interested in photography, since most of these great photographers are not covered in your everyday textbook. Buy one for yourself and more as gifts!!!
I am obsessed with black history and am a visual person, so this book was nothing short of amazing for me! i loved looking at the pictures and how the author sectioned them off according to time periods. It was very enlightening and I had a blast reading it! I ended up giving it to a friend of mine who is a photographer and she LOVED IT! thanks so much for a great read!
I loved the history and the knowledge that this book presented . The one thing I hated was the small print .
EXCELLENT BOOK!
To me it was beautiful. I was once those little girls in my Sunday finery. The ordinary folk are my kind of folk. There are pictures of "stars" also, but I did not know them then and do not know them now. How refreshing and yet nostalgic for me.
Beneath the blanket of cultural arrogance that - even today - refuses to acknowledge the contributions made by its own citizens, is a truth that has been beautifully presented here by Ms. Willis. The images and text fully support what writer Richard Wright wrote, that, "OUR HISTORY IS FAR STRANGER THAN YOU SUSPECT, AND WE ARE NOT WHAT WE SEEM." Brava, Ms. Willis, and thank you.
Given as a gift to a dear shutter-bug friend who loved loved loved period pictures and subjects.
