Written by a man with a mind that works well. Many people think these things, but Joel is able to say them well. This will get you thinking about how far we are from where we should be.

I want Joe's life! If I had read this book in college, I would have gone this route. This is a story (sort of) about a man and what he has made of his and his family's life. It's about hard work and being rewarded. Being healthy and being one with the environment.Writing is good. It's obvious he is not a professional writer. It is almost like siting in a TED Talk as you read. As important as his message is, it does seem to get a bit repetitive. But then again, that repetitiveness makes you want to get out there and do things. There were several side stories about how things were and about personal interactions. Overall interesting while delivering a message. It wasn't only him, but this book has helped me get outdoors. Three raised garden beds later, I'm improving my own little yard, spending time with my kids outdoors and being much more healthy.

This is a wonderful book, filled with interesting knowledge and a philosophy of how food should be grown. I have to admit that, as far as I'm concerned, he is preaching to the choir. Yet, there are several things about the book that bother me, especially a conflict between the principles of the first half and the second. This is not a book about how to do farming, although the attentive reader would pick up many good points. It is more about a philosophy of self-sufficiency and using nature rather than battling it. The first part of the book handles that very well. Basically, the author contrasts the way food is raised on a "traditional" but well managed nature-embracing farm and the way food is produced in the industrial approach to raising vegetables and meat. Needless to say, he illustrates the horror and unhealthy results of the latter. He also makes excellent points as to the true costs of our over-subsidized industrial agriculture - particularly with respect to energy consumption.Along the way he illustrates how the farm life, lived his way, creates emotional strength and satisfaction for the farmer and creates children who are happy, confident, realistic and responsible. He does a great job of selling this approach to self-sufficiency and community stability. My only problem with some of his methods is a health worry. He is big on pasturing both cattle and hogs (and having chickens follow them around). In fact the hogs go rooting in the forest, to the forest's benefit.I believe all this, but I worry about the possible downside -- parasites. I wince when I watch TV and see the feral hog hunters eating the pork they catch. I have to believe parasites are a problem when the meat producing livestock just wander through nature. On the other hand, industrial meat (and vegetables) may be free of parasites, but they create a number of anti-biotic resistant mutant microbes and viruses, not to mention the steroids and other unnatural chemicals we eat. Now, after this bucolic picture of farm life revealed in the first half, the author gets to another area. He talks about the conflict between the industrial food producers and the "little guy." There he reveals that he isn't all that little. He would appear to be relatively wealthy from his writings. His home farm is 550 acres and he rents several others. He wants to sell his produce far and wide. To me this seems inconsistent with enjoying a natural self-sufficient life on your own land. He wants to be a mini-industrialist. This bothered me.Nevertheless, he makes terrific points about the idiocies and hidden agendas of government regulation. He appears shocked to realize that the regulations are not so much to protect the consumer (despite support from "consumer advocacy" groups), but rather to protect the big producers from competition. I'm not shocked. I'm old enough to remember numerous times when a free-market-loving industry is confronted with upstart competition that it runs to its well-paid politicians for protection and relief. This is nothing new. But, it is bad. Of course the shock of actually going to free markets is something no politician would really like to see.He makes a good point about trying out new regulatory schemes on a small limited scale to see the real effect before rolling them out to cover everyone. That's something business has always known, and government never. However, I think he, like Milton Freeman, embraces the free market concept but is pretty naïve about how one gets rid of the bad actors. True, in small areas of society where everyone knows everyone else the word can get around and the bad actors decimated. That's not so easy in our population-crammed society. He thinks one solution is that we all just have contractual relations with no limits on what we can agree to. That could work if we were all equal, but we're not.Amusingly, he absolutely hates lawyers for good reasons (and I am a recovering lawyer), yet in this land of free contracts he would have things done by "arbitration." He needs to think this through more thoroughly. Just an aside - He thinks our politicians and judges should come more from the common people and not the lawyer class. Actually, we used to do that. My first law case was before a non-lawyer judge, the last one in Missouri. He was terrific, although I lost the case. Also, Harry Truman was a non-lawyer judge before going on to bigger things. So, the bottom line is that I love the book, although I'm not sure I agree with all his ideas. The author, Joel Salatin, is very creative, articulate, and puts a lot of material in his books. He also includes some great excerpts from Benjamin Franklin and Thomas Jefferson. We should all meditate on these. This book will perhaps inspire you, definitely make you think, and maybe even act. So, despite my quibbles I give this 5 stars.

Absolutely brilliant book about the "ways things outta be". Through great stories and lots of information, author Joel Salatin invites you on a journey to rediscover the roots of America. This isn't a "let's go back to the way things used to be" book. Up to date scientific data and research provide rich analysis of the best of now and yesteryear farming practices. Some of the information was a bit above me, but still enlightening.Mr. Salatin will cause you to rethink our industrial food market, among many other things. You will be challenged reading this book. You will be inspired as well. Thank you to the author for pouring his heart and soul into such a great work.

I don't have time to write a huge review, but I'm about 3 chapters in and loving this book.I knew of Joel from a few articles I'd read on Mother Earth News and from a few documentaries---but a recent recommendation to pick up some of his books was a great recommendation. Joel Salatin has basically writing exactly what I've been figuring out for the last few years on my own without my even knowing of him. The problem is, how to get more on board so we don't feel so lonely heading towards more sustainable lifestyles?Basically, where are you other people? We(my wife and I) want to grow and learn more and more about permaculture type ideals and sustainability--yet we feel alone in the dark with no real community. Those who I keep meeting who have any interest in the ideas and things like Joel shares are on the fence too much or too far away to have a real community.

The 10 Keys to Happy and Loving Relationships opens with definitions of the types of love - eros, phileo and agape. This is foundational in understanding how to love our neighbour, ourselves and especially our enemies. Each chapter starts with Love is... and loosely follows the "love chapter" (1 Corinthians 13) from the Bible that we have become familiar with hearing at most wedding ceremonies: "Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres."Each chapter ends with affirmations and questions for further thought and action, along with quotable quotes.Jesus said that the greatest commandment is to love the Lord your God, followed by love your neighbour as yourself. (Matthew 22; 36-39) This small book gives tools to communicate such love and fulfill this commandment.I recommend this little ebook as a wonderful tool to help apply Biblical truths about love in our relationships.

First off, this is a very short book...easily read in its entirety in one quick sitting. It outlines 10 keys the author has listed as essential to loving relationships. On the surface the brevity of pages and the ease of reading the book may cause the casual observer to dismiss the import of its content...but that would be jumping to conclusions. This is one of the best guides on this matter I have ever read because it is different than other "self-help" books. Its difference lies in the author's emphasis on showing loving actions & attitudes as a factor of our own choice in how we relate to others...the obligations and choices we make in our relationships. Most other self-help books emphasize behavioral changes and treat "love" as if it were a reward from others to us..this book shows how love should flow from us to others...without the necessity of reciprocity. As a Christian I certainly understand this emphasis...and am grateful that an author has chosen to write on it.If anyone reads this book...and follows its outline and advice...they may find their life transformed in a very deep way.

I read this in one 6 hour shift at work! My boyfriend and I have only been together 1 month and I've never been in a serious long-term HEALTHY relationship despite my adult age, and so I sought to download all the applicable kindle books I could on how NOT to screw up my relationship, and this book was a very good read, while you'll discover the 10 keys are fairly obvious, the details that follow the initial keys are very insightful. There was some religious ties in the book that I honestly wasn't expecting, but I am technically a Christian and while I have fairly agnostic views they didn't much bother me. I just kind of accepted their presence and kept on my reading.

In short and simple words Krystal Kuehn takes on an important excerpt from the Bible about love and brings it to our day to day life. In her book, 10 Keys to Happy and Loving Relationships, Krystal propels readers to think about their shortcomings when it comes to expressing love and also shows readers how they can apply the Biblical attributes of love in their relationships. The truth about love expressed in this book can be applied to any kind of relationship and bring results. Krystal made me believed that I can go out and love anyone without fear.I recommend this book if you want to learn how to positively impact your relationships and how to express your love for others.

This was truly a great little eBook on love and relationships! I love the affirmations, questions, and quotes at the end of each chapter. SO many of us lack an understanding of what love REALLY is, but the author of this eBook helps to bring that understanding to her readers.

You've heard the verses read at nearly every wedding you've attended. This book basically expounds on those verses (love is patient, love is kind, etc.).

This book is a detailed description of 1Cor love. However, the affirmations and quotes are great. There tips for putting your love in action. I believe anyone could benefit from reading this book especially those in a troubled loving relationship.

I havent had time to read the whole book so far, but it is okay not much to keep your interest which is why its probably taking me a while to finish reading it.

Many mosaics books skimp on the part about using tools for cutting stone, glass, etc. This one goes more in depth, with good pictures. Good for beginners and intermediates.

This a great beginner book for someone starting out with mosaics. Very detailed with what tools, products, patterns, etc. are good for the beginner. Would recommend highly!

Not sure what I was expecting, but the projects were a little too simple and not that great. I wished they would have had some more exciting projects that I would want to display. The tips were fine, but not the projects

Such a disappointment. Major breach of continuity in terms of the "cultural" spirit, character, feel of the series. If I'd known Horowitz was going to turn over a new leaf in such a bad way, I wouldn't have bothered to read it. It just doesn't have the same suspense, excitement, creativity, compulsively readable quality as the original series. Too many things were too forced...And speaking of that -- don't even get me started on the force-feeding of the PC garbage. Unrealistic, offensive BS that staunchly ignores reality as millions have to suffer it everyday while the PC Gestapo attack truth and victims instead of the blatantly inhumane words and actions of actual oppressors, and the transparent lies told by their apologists. Go read the original series instead, which ended with Russian Roulette. Better yet, find some good, old-fashioned Robert Ludlum.

I've been reading Anthony Horowitz's Alex Rider series since it first came out. The books never disappoint. The audio version is always great fun. This book was no exception. My only gripe is that it's been so long, so very long, since the last book. The book picks up right where the last one ended.....so long ago. It seems like it ended with a cliff hanger for the next book. Which I will enjoy & look forward to. But please just don't wait as long next time. This 50+ fangirl really enjoys the books.

A great novel yet again from Anthony Horowitz. The Alex Rider & Jason Steed series are the best teen spy books out. They never get old, are easy to read and always exciting.A couple of small problems with continuity with regards to Ben "Wolf/Fox" Daniels that any Alex Rider fan would spot I expect this will be put right on the second edition.I couldn't help but compare this to Scorpia Rising. That novel was fantastic: we saw the dark side of Alex Rider and there was a lot of emotion in that which was just lacking in this. You sometimes hated him, other times admired him. In this, it's just non-stop heroism for Alex. In addition, the writing felt considerably less sophisticated and rather clunky. But maybe that's just to do with growing older and reading more books.I did like the miraculous plot twists. The writing is as fast paced as ever. I'm sure it will appeal to young teens as it always has, and it's going to sell, but will we ever get a proper ending where Alex Rider lives happily ever after?

Okay, I must admit that I promised myself I would never read this, as Scorpia Rising was such a great final installment to the Alex Rider series, but I couldn't contain my curiosity and decided to buy it on my iPad. But the question still remains... is 'Never Say Die' any good? And the answer is, 'yes, yes it is'. Despite being the official 10th installment to the Alex Rider saga (yeah, I know there was that Yassen book, but that was a spin-off), Never Say Die captured my attention through the first page alone. It felt fresh and different, while still retaining the Alex Rider feel that I'm used to. And the best part is that it gets started with Alex's next adventure. My biggest worry was how long before we would see the story progress, but the book doesn't let anything get in the way of that. It just jumps right on in and keeps going until the very end.I love how Horowitz handles Alex's PTSD in a post-Scorpia Rising world. You definitely feel that he has changed and that what he has been through will never allow for him to return to normal. And when he gets a message that gives him hope, you feel that hope along with him because of the experience we felt with him in Scorpia Rising. For the first time in so long, we see actual development with his character. But with that said, there are some negatives. For one, there are a few continuity errors that are very noticeable. At the end of the Scorpia Rising, it's said that no one knows about Alex's final mission against Scorpia or what actually happened to Jack. However, this story implies that the Pleasure family knows about this. And for another, the author mistakes two characters for the same person, Wolf and Ben Daniels. There is a final negative, but I'll need to go into SPOILERS for that. For a return back to literature, Never Say Die earns its place among the Alex Rider series and doesn't disappoint. Give it a read and decided for yourself.Warning: SPOILER TERRITORY AHEAD!!!Alright, now I'm going to go into spoilers in this section. So if you don't want to know anything, stop right here. You've been warned.I talked about a final negative I had with this book and that's the fact that the ending undoes certain developments from the last novel. Jack is alive, both her and Alex are living in London again, Mrs. Jones is thinking of using Alex again for another mission (leading into the next book), and Alex is beginning to feel that things are beginning to get better. However, I think that undoes most of the development Alex has gone through. I like seeing him having to go through the pain of losing Jack and what that means for his new life. I liked seeing that some realism is introduced into the series. But by bringing Jack back, it makes everything in the last book just feel pointless now. There's no emotion to be had anymore, no complexity. And it took away the lesson that the life of a spy is one filled with ugliness, one that Alex learned big time.I also disliked that Alex and Sabina are no longer in a relationship together, or at least for not given a reason why they broke up. The last book definitely confirmed they were dating, but now they're suddenly back to being friends again, without any explanation as to why. Sure, we could put the pieces together, as the two are adopted siblings now and how Alex has been distant from her, but its the way how they act that feels off. It's almost as if the relationship never happened between them. Maybe the author will pair them back together in the future ahead, as they are no longer adopted siblings anymore. My biggest worry is whether or not Horowitz has a plan in what he's going to do with this series, now that it's back. I don't want it to just be the 'run-of-the-mill'. I don't want it to just mission after mission, another big bad/organization to take down. I want a direction and end-game for this series. The only thing that comes to mind that is interesting to see happen, is Alex's life as a spy being exposed to the public. That is something that I want to see happen in this series. But, for what its worth, Never Say Die is a fine installment and will make any Alex Rider fan happy. Enjoy reading!

Reader thoughts:11 books might be a bit too long, but these are still fun. For Alex, it has only been about a year, year and a half since he became a spy.A helicopter lifted a bus? A train ran down a car? Explosions, poison, gold statues, mass kidnappings, and Alex thrown in the sea with heavy chains! This was just as good as the other books.Writer thoughts:Some of the timing is fictionalized. MI6 says, "Alex, we have a mission for you. It's urgent. So, go train for 2 weeks" (book 1) or "So, we're going to let you recover from your wounds for a couple days before we give you any details" (this book).Authors need to find that balance between a fast-paced story and one that is believable

I have read all the series and the first few were very good. After a while the stories were basically the same just different settings, but Mr. Horowitz has recaptured the allure of the series with this one. This story felt fresh and new. I'm pumped to get the next one!

Great story line and plot. So glad to have Alex back. Horowitz develops a great story. His research and attention to detail superb, but not always needs. There were a couple errors along the was (what floor they were on, how tall and long the aircraft is...) but over all really great.
