About the Author
Burrhus Frederic Skinner (1904–1990), regarded by many as the most important and influential psychologist since Freud, earned his doctorate in psychology at Harvard University in 1931. When I first read this book years ago, I understood for the first time why America has such a violent culture. When I hear the news about school shootings and second amendment rights, I see that Skinner understood why these were part of our culture, and that we can't stop killing our children by banning weapons but we would need to change our whole culture. We would need to address our deepest fears, and find within ourselves a new way to feel safe and confident.
BF Skinner's prescient book gave his analysis of the human challenges to our survival back in 1972. At the time, it was mostly theory. But the events of today's political turmoil have borne out his predictions. So too has the dramatic rise in the use of his recommendations for helping people - Applied Behavior Analysis.
Excellent book for understanding the philosophy ABA is built upon, it is a quick and easy read, recommend to anyone in the field of ABA or for those who regularly interact with behavior analysts

Skinner being a highly influential psychologist, his ideas are worth exploring. His writing is less clear than it could (=should) be though and he comes across as a bit of a blowhard.

Great book.
Some may find the concepts that Skinner presents in this book to be disturbing or offensive. However, those concepts are correct and scientifically verifiable. The science of behavior is a true natural science based on scientific laws and empirical evidence. It is humorous, although sad, that the criticisms of the book in these reviews commit the very errors he describes in the book—unscientific, mystical ideas long proven to be totally erroneous—which have led to the misunderstanding of behavior and the crises we faced then and still face now.Behavior science has made many advances since this book was written, but I highly recommend it as an introduction to the type of covert verbal behavior repertoire needed to approach behavior from a scientific perspective.
