An excellent account of what went on in the North Sea a hundred years ago, this is, understandably, an attempt to undo a long-standing wrong to the author's grandfather. Frankly, the author's right.In the minds of many, on the British side this was a contest between a lack-luster commander and his brilliant subordinate. In fact it was the quest for written history between an extraordinarily well-qualified and successful but quiet commander, and his exceptionally ambitious, media-savvy, and rather pompous subordinate, who succeeded in convincing the powers who mattered at the time that the commander was at fault for any shortcomings and he, the subordinate, was right in every respect.In examining the battle in retrospect -- and in some detail -- it becomes obvious that if any major British commander showed a lack of ability at Jutland, it was Admiral Beatty. Admiral Jellicoe, on the other hand, commander of the entire Grand Fleet and as Churchill famously said, "the only man on either side who could lose the war in an afternoon," performed brilliantly given the limitations placed on him by the communications of the era (and some subordinate commanders of questionable overall competence).Re-fighting Jutland ended with the start of the Second World War, and the record as it then existed was allowed to stand. This book is a long overdue attempt to set the record straight. For those students of naval history, a very good read.The book suffers from some uncorrected typos and not much else.
The author reveals his family's stake in the battle by blaming subordinate commanders for their lack of communication with Admiral Jellicoe. But, in the navy, you fight like you train, and Jellicoe clearly did not train his commanders properly and did not provide clear orders about when and what to communicate. Certainly there is some cultural blame to assign, as well as the always tricky transition to new technology (wireless), but Jellicoe deserves his fair share of the blame for the poor performance. Aside from that, the book reads well and provides a good historical perspective on the battle. The descriptions of where each squadron was located were not useful, and the charts that were included spanned such long intervals that it was difficult to form a coherent picture of who did what when and where. I found it to be an okay read, but not a great one.
A great deal has been written about Jutland since 1916, much of it written for the specialist reader, or published with an obvious ax to grind. Thankfully, you don't have to be an amateur naval strategist to enjoy this book. An interest in the subject is obviously needed, but a library of naval textbooks isn't. It's well-written, compelling, and moves along at a good pace. Even the technical asides, focusing on subjects such as range-finding and signaling, aren't terribly complex. After a series of introductory chapters setting up the main characters (Fisher, Tirpitz, Jellicoe, Beatty, Scheer, and Hipper), the next five chapters cover Jutland itself, each chapter focusing on a major phase of the battle. The final four chapters then describe the aftermath of the battle and its effect on British and German strategy, the careers of the commanding admirals afterward, and the partisan controversy which has surrounded it for the last century.Nicholas Jellicoe obviously has a personal stake in this story, and along with being a narrative of the battle, this book is a passionate attempt to bring some justice to John Jellicoe. He demolishes a number of persistent myths surrounding Admiral Jellicoe's performance during the battle, while at the same time criticizing him where criticism is due. He highlights many of the problems both sides faced during the battle, including atrocious visibility, dangerous ammunition handling processes, poor gunnery, lack of (or excessive) initiative, and inadequate and contradictory signaling. Much of the blame for what went wrong on the British side is placed firmly at Admiral Beatty's feet, though once again, Jellicoe does praise him as he sees fit.The Kindle version, unfortunately, suffers from a number of issues, and it's not terribly surprising it's currently on sale for $1.30. Whatever OCR program was used had an odd habit of stripping every apostrophe from the text, mashing together letters (ships flying "the hag" in foreign harbors, etc.), and occasionally even combining six or seven entire words into a single stream of consciousness. An issue with the book itself is the small number of maps and their lack of detail; I found myself taking breaks to study the big color maps in "The Great War at Sea: A Naval Atlas" instead to get a better idea of the battle's progression.Although it doesn't terribly modify the generally accepted story of the battle, this book does go a long way towards stomping out some of the ridiculous myths and revisionist accounts that have sprung up over the last 100 years. I imagine the controversy will continue for a long time still, but with any luck, Nicholas Jellicoe will have found some closure in writing this book.
I concur with the comments of the other reviewers and add that this book is truly outstanding for two important reasons.Firstly, on page 115 there is a QR Code, which provides access via a tablet to databases that in turn provide a level of detail that could only be captured in a volume of books. With the book in one hand and a tablet in the other you can research in detail key points as they are raised by the author. The databases cover all the signals sent and received, detailed gunnery records and track charts of both fleets during the action. Recognizing that these charts can be difficult to follow there is also an animation of the battle. These databases should keep “Jutland aficionados†happy for many hours. This access to databases makes this book “the†book to have on Jutland, notwithstanding all the existing and recent excellent Jutland books.The other element is the personal comments inserted throughout referencing friends and relatives related to those involved in the battle. This is an insight to the closely-knit “band of brothers’ who fought on both sides in the battle, that is still alive.
