While most history textbooks are heavy on the narrative and text, this one provides dynamic and detailed maps that provide another level of understanding. For example, did you know that the 1830 "July Revolution" in France had a direct influence on the 1831 Polish Uprising, which occurred in both Polish and Lithuanian territory, and how this was an important precedent to the 1863 Polish Revolt? The suppression of these revolts and other restrictions on freedom, in turn, led to significant emigration of Poles and Liths to the US in the late 19th century (and, decades later, some of their descendants became governors, business leaders, and other notable people in the US). What about a super-concise chronology of the French Revolution, key battles, legal reforms, and how the Napoleonic Wars between France and other European powers were also a global conflict?

As usual, Penguin books come through again. If looking for anything on history, archaeology, the classics, religion or etymology my first thought is always Penguin. For over fifty years now I have relied on their editions. The two volume Atlas of World History is an excellent compact reference.

The book opens with the Secret Society of Supervillains planning their next nefarious act of villainy. Awesome. Ah, but it lasts just a single page as the Justice League with Lex Luthor burst in and take them down off panel. Quite frankly I don't understand why the subtitle of the book is "Injustice League" since the Injustice League never makes an appearance. I can only assume Geoff Johns is referring to the fact that Luthor is made a member of the Justice League but theoretically he joined to perform justice. Johns work on the Justice League seems to resemble a sine wave in that the fun factor goes up and down. Trinity Wars was a depressing mess but Forever Evil was a blast and that includes Justice League vol. 5. The conclusion of Forever Evil promised an even greater battle, this time between the Anti-Monitor and Darkseid but Justice League vol. 6 is merely the prelude to the war.Having received tremendous praise for helping save the Earth Lex Luthor decides he wants to become an actual full-fledged member of the justice League. The reason he gives is that he wants to team with the Justice League in order to prevent the greater calamity that looms, in particular whatever force it was that destroyed Earth 3 and caused the Crime Syndicate to seek a new world. Luthor seems to be sincere and even maintains his story under the influence of Wonder Woman’s magic truth forcing lasso. Meanwhile, reverberations from the Crime Syndicate are still being felt. Superwoman is pregnant in jail and Power Ring’s ring is searching for a new owner while signaling the Anti-Monitor like a beacon.After the fun of Forever Evil Geoff Johns is clearly giving the Justice League a breather before the Darkseid War. If you can call a book where literally the entire world is at risk from something called the ‘Amazo Virus’ a breather. Most of the book revolves around the question of whether Lex Luthor is legit in seeking to save Earth or whether it’s just one more scheme to gain power. I didn’t really get into the Jessica Cruz/Ring of Volthoom storyline but I’m glad to see the Crime Syndicate isn't completely done. Superwoman is still around and *hmmm* I think Owlman was never captured. There’s an appearance by the Doom Patrol which was a little interesting but then it was over with no real resolution. Overall I give the book better than average marks but it does feel like the car is idling between the two big events. Obviously Johns can’t just continue to have relentless action but this is a very dialogue heavy book and although it had its moments there were stretches that dragged for me. I will say the book was good enough that I'll be picking up the next volume. I've been hugely disappointed by some of the DC franchises I've tried lately including Justice League Dark and Suicide Squad so I'm glad to see the flagship DC superhero team is holding up well. Now bring on the Anti-Monitor and Darkseid.

I really hate how DC breaks up their JL Volumes. Make sure you read "Forever Evil" first as there is a huge gap between this volume and volume 5.As far as this actual issue; these comics are really starting to get good. Adding "reformed" villains into mix has really made the story's alot more interesting.

The Justice League title has largely been strong in the New 52, both revitalizing and maintaining the popularity of its members. This book signals a new chapter for the League, as three new characters are introduced into the ranks alongside Superman,Wonder Woman, and the rest. As is usually the first noticed quality of any comic book, the art is integral to this collection. While the Justice League title has often been home to greats Lee, Reis, and D'Anda, some of the chapters felt week to me. I felt as if I was reading a mediocre-sandwich: good bookends, but a lousy middle. Reis and Mahnke deliver well, with each playing to their strengths, however I somehow felt both artists were not living up to some of their previous work. This was hard for me to state, as Reis is one of my favorites. I have no doubt that he was busy with several projects at the time, but come on, Justice League is a title that deserves top-notch stuff. The art preceding the Amazo arc is just terrible; plain, dull, and inconsistent best fit the style. If you've read any other review for this collection, you've no doubt heard (or seen) how spectacular Jason Fabok's art is in Justice League. Let me reassure you, he certainly is. Now, it's not quite perfect, but he is still learning about these characters and will no doubt improve over time. The Amazo arc is certainly the strong point of this book, and probably is why that particular image was selected for the cover. The writing is still good, although I felt a major slow-done compared to the previous arc in Forever Evil. While it can be expected that there will be a bit of a lull between major events, some of the pages were trudged through, with only mildly interesting conflict in the Doom Patrol, and a rather ho-hum origin of the new Power Ring. Part of the challenging nature of the Justice League title is giving focus to each existing character, while also trying to create new and interesting plot. Johns was more than able to shine the light on dozens of characters in Blackest Night. However he not only failed to flesh out some of the new players, but also neglected some key League members. The saving grace, in addition to the Amazo Visrus, was Johns' writing of Lex Luther. He really nailed this character and made him an even more interesting read.Over all, this book is well worth the purchase, but it does not quite deliver the same power and action previous Justice League stories have. Sometimes change is good, other times it is best remembered as that one villain that never showed up again.

Standard Geoff Johns fare. The storytelling pulls you in, makes you invested in the characters, and before you know it you consume an entire story as easy as drinking a cup of water. You don't have to know 75 years of history to appreciate the story, but his stories will make you appreciate 75 years of history.

Cool. The costume humor is kind of fun in a super dark story. Superb artwork and the extra sketches and concepts we get in the digital collections are always welcome. On to Vol 7!

This is a great book but you have to get Forever Evil with it. I assure you that you won't regret it.

collecting issues 30-39. this brings the conclusion to the Forever evil arc and the Amazo Virus. personally this was my favorite story since throne of atlantis. I really enjoy Geoff Johns Justice League.

Though the ending is a bit anti-climactic, the little bits of interaction in between is well written. Characterization comes in full boost for Lex Luthor. Really want to see more of him. It almost looks like he is the evil version of Bruce Wayne. I dig it!

We found the book to be outdated and not very useful. It did have general information about Cozumel, but was not what I was looking for to achieve a better experience on the island.

Very easy to read and generally accurate. Readers should note that some of the references to restaurants and hotels are not completely up-to-date. Still very useful on recent trips.

Great reference for the island of Cozumel with a lot of detailed hints (reads like someone's diary). And as far as we've found, the author is right: Cozumel is usually a small blip in books dedicated almost solely to Cancun (or the entire Yucatan Peninsula). If you're spending more than one day on the island, definitely worth it.

I own one the the restaurants reviewed by Ms, Holt, I moved 6 years ago, she neither has my location correct , nor is the discount coupon authorized.U can get disocunts at most the restaurants in Cozumel for just paying in Cash. Don't waste yoru money. If my coupon was fake, then I can only assume more are also.Buyer beware

I have been a Cozumel resident for five years. I had the opportunity to view this guide book last week for the first time. While it appears to those who are unfamiliar with the island as a wonderful resource, buyer beware. There are numerous errors in the book which include but are not limited to: incorrect phone numbers, website addresses, e-mail addresses, improper spellings of establishments, and establishments that no longer exist...one in particular has not existed in over five years!The author has good intentions, but she did not do her homework and did not do a thorough fact check before publishing this book.

I tend to disagree with the most recent review of this book. I have been a LONG TIME part time resident of the Island, since 1987. I purchased this book for use by my guests, and have actually used it myself. I agree there are a few editorial errors, and some just barely out of date information, but 95%% of this book is valuable information, with out of the way dining options, that would seldom be found on the internet, and small shops who also do not find their way to the internet or printed guidebooks. Guidebooks are a difficult thing to keep current to the minute, as by the time it prints there are already changes. Used in conjuction with the Cozumel Can Do map, this is a terriffic resource.

I bought this book because I have a trip planned to Cozumel in a few months. And as others have found, you cannot find a book dedicated solely to Cozumel, just a chapter or two, so this book has great info. However, I was disappointed that there were no color pictures or more of them! Pictures would be much more helpful, especially when listing beaches. All-around good buy, though.

It's a good addition to your library but these types of books need to be updated more regularly as tips are given that are no longer valid (i.e., "..get Club Caribe Card at their web-site to save $$$"...) but web-site no longer exists, some stuff like that. Still, if you've never been to Coz, it's a another good tool for your learning belt.

The Interpretation series is a well thought out and written commentary series, and this addition falls right in line with the other books in the series. This is a wonderful resource for preaching as well as writing a bible study.

Would be an excellent commentary if the author did not skip 3 chapters. This commentary is one of the best for leading Bible study. The author writes well and I was disappointed to see that whole chapters are skipped.For that reason I cannot recommend the book for leading a Bible study.

Fortunately Mr. Limburg writes in language we can understand. So many Biblical scholars write "over our heads" for Seniors in Bible Study or Sunday school and it makes it difficult for some of the members to understand and keep up with the lesson. Our class is enjoying this book.

I know the author personally and so I am not at all surprised at the warmth and usefulness of this volume in the middle of the minor prophets. Useful is not the word for this. Extremely warm and lively is more like it, and very useful in the preparation of classes or sermons. You can tell that the author has taught students for many years by the way he breaks things down and keeps topics alive. GMM

I was almost about to conclude that the first volume of "The Demon Prince" was a typical shojo manga, with not much going on. This book, "Sextant" was a highly enjoyable read. I have a few years of sailing experience, but never learned to use a sextant and did not appreciate how it originated and how to navigate by the stars, sun and moon using a sextant. Most sailors today use their GPS or other electronic equipment. This book takes the reader on a cross the Atlantic voyage with the author and his expert navigator-mentor in a small sailboat. As we travel on his cross-Atlantic voyage, the author takes us back to the days of the early ocean explorers and their navigational challenges in the years before the invention of the sextant. We learn about the evolution of navigational aids. We also are given very good history lessons on the accomplishments and lives of the early explorers like Vancouver, Cook, Magellan, Shackleton,and many more. There are very helpful maps and instrument design layouts in the book along with photographs of explorers and their vessels. Encounters with huge seas, vicious storms, capsizing, mutiny, shipwreck, and first encounters with indigent people on islands and remote coastlines all contribute to a book full of exciting stories. On top of that, we are introduced to some of the inner workings of maritime insurance firms, shipping investors, book publishers, and the intrigues that accompany the lives of ship captains and ship owners. I did not find a single thing in this book not to like.Weigh anchor me mateys and read on.

I love stuff about ancient astronomy and navigation, so I ate this up. The details on the use of the sextant were only vaguely known to me. Also in Sobel's wonderful LONGITUDE she makes the advocates of the lunar angle navigation method look like dummies, but Barrie makes it clear that this method was usable and widespread.The "Young man's daring sea voyage" used as the glue to hold all this material together could well have been edited out. It is irrelevant and bogs down the narrative; that cost him a star.

David Barrie's "Sextant" is a nice answer to Sobel's "Longitude" from a nearly a generation ago. The "young man's daring sea voyage" refers to a trans-Atlantic crossing that Barrie made when he was about twenty. It's not all that interesting, hardly daring, and in any case it's second fiddle here to a very nice history of the great explorers and navigators of early modern British history, best exemplified by James Cook. The focus is on their navigational tools, not merely the sextant but also the mathematical methods that made it all possible, including the subject of lunars. This is a rather traditional history, and all of these stories have been told elsewhere in more detail, but Barrie's synthesis focusing on the science of navigation is unique. "Sextant" is loaded with excellent information, but there's no depth to the analysis here, and Barrie sometimes has a credulous faith in other people's research or their own spin on things. The writing style is easy-going and intelligent. Read Sobel's "Longitude" and read Barrie's "Sextant". Then average!

I am a retired US Navy optical instrument repair man, I have overhauled and refurbished I don't know how many sextants. The age of sail and navigation are my special area of interest. I thoroughly enjoyed this book. While I am not quite sure this is for everyone, it might be a bit too specialised for a general reading audience. If you like tales of adventure from the age of sail you should give this a read.

As a civil engineer in today's world, I have, of necessity, used the amazing advance of technology in my career, mostly at the loss of the "old ways of performing my work". I have often wondered about the use of older equipment and methods of calculation, and have been curious about the use of tools such as the sextant, therefore this book has been extremely interesting to me. I have enjoyed the description of the author's voyages, and the tale of former, and hazardous sea adventures of famous explorers. Very well written book.

In 1971, I started Navigation school in the USAF. I did celestial with a bubble sextant. Was never very good at it as they did not give us this background. I wish they had.I think the main point I get from Mr. Barrie's book is that the further mankind moves from the basics, the more they lose. When we forget 'the basics', the value of our fellow citizens shrinks. Thus the great homelessness crises around the world. Work, itself, loses value and so does mankind. Very enlightening if a book I got to remember 'The first point of Aries' and 'East is least, West is best.'

An excellently written narrative that combines the author's sea adventures with historical events of maritime accomplishments of truly outstanding heroics! Along the way, the sextant is a focal point described as it was used in the past and still used today. Well worth reading for those who love the sea or just vicariously travel it!

I was trained by the Navy in long range aerial navigation using a bubble sextant in the late 60's, as a third pilot in the P2V7. With this background, I was curious to read about the history of the sextant and the details of the seafaring unit. The book did a nice job on both counts, while simultaneously describing its use on a trans-Atlantic sailing. So it blends a technical explanation with an interesting story.
